Vera looks ready for the Safina-Azarenka winner. I'm sure she'd like revenge against Safina more, but she can rattle young up and comers as well.

Scenarios involved among the QF ladies:
* Safina becomes #1 if she makes the finals
* Zvonareva becomes #5 if she wins Indian Wells
* Azarenka moves into top 10 regardless of outcome, up to as high as #8 possibly
* Radwanska can move to #9 or stay at #10
* Ivanovic's rank stays the same regardless of outcome
* Wozniacki moves up to #12, I believe
* Bammer I need someone to tell me how she fared at IW last year
* Pavlyuchenkova moves into the top 30 if she does nothing else, possibly #20-21 if she wins it all

I'll figure out Bammer and Pavlyuchenkova later.

IW 2008 - Bammer lost in the round of 64 :)

Pavlyuchenkova didn't participate at IW in 2008

Azarenka defeated Safina 6-7 6-1 6-3. Safina needs a new coach, a shrink, and huge punching bag. Azarenka hit well and earned the win, but Safina pretty much tanked the last 3 games of that match.

Safina will never be #1 until:
* She fixes that serve!!!
* She realizes that more points are lost than won (in other words, stop doing your opponents favors spraying the ball like no tomorrow)
* Serena retires or goes on a long hiatus
* Tweaks the forehand so she doesn't find herself vulnerable to low balls so much

I would add Safina needs to learn to be confident when things aren't going her way. The entire third set she looked terrified. She didn't seem like she believed in herself at all anymore and lost what she had in the first set. Azarenka has inner fire and confidence all the time, Safina only has it some of the time.

Agreed. It seems the first set took so much from Safina, mentally... that the second set lull she experienced was unrecoverable.

However, kudos to Azarenka for her second set performance... owning a first serve percentage of 95%!

Well, Safina had that confidence last year, especially in Berlin when she fought against multiple match points down, and then did it again in Paris.

Of course, she was the underdog then...I think she is having trouble (mentally) adjusting to this idea of being a #1 seed and/or the favorite to win!

Good win for Azarenka, she's made some nice, steady progress year after year...seems to be going about things in a very smart way. Personally, though, I just wish she wouldn't screech so much! Lol, it makes my throat hurt just listening to her!

Safina vs Azarenka:
Both have won tight matches while at times displaying their best. Safina is probably happy she won't face Peer, but her serve is still suspect. Both have plenty to gain from winning this match. I call it a toss-up. If Safina doesn't bring her A game, Azarenka's superior ball-striking, better serves and movement will be too much.

I was pretty much right on this one. :|

And gets broken, pretty easily!

I like the comments from her coach...that it doesn't matter who is serving in this match! How true!

Pavlyuchenkova to the SF

Just took out A. Radwanska!

AND, in straight sets.

Pav has yet to drop a set and is into her first WTA Tour SF.

Congrats to Pavlyuchenkova. She's proving to be quite the player and she's still only 17. I underestimated her a bit, but I'll keep an eye out for her.

So is there anywhere I can watch wta online now? tennistv's rights restrictions mean I can't even pay to watch lol

i hear bammer withdrew?

Yes, Bammer withdrew with a shoulder injury, giving AnaIvo a walkover.

I think tennistv is the only game (no pun intended) for WTA...sorry! :( Are you in one of the restricted areas?

Semifinals are Set

Hmmm...

Zvonareva vs Azarenka
In my opinion the real IW final. Zvonareva has kicked butt to get this far. Azarenka has struggled a bit, but finished strong against Safina. Zvonareva probably would have preferred to play Safina, but she's full of confidence herself. Zvonareva on paper should win this as she's more experienced and has an effective all-around game. I picked Azarenka to win it all, but it wouldn't surprise me to see this go either way.

Ivanovic vs Pavlyuchenkova
Ivanovic got lucky Pennetta played so bad. Then got another bonus with Bammer pulling out. Still, Ivanovic has the pressure on her. Pavlyuchenkova is playing fantastic. Momentum is on Pavlyuchenkova's side and barring Ivanovic playing at her very best, I smell an upset here.

Again, I agree with your assessment almost 100%.

Zvonareva leads 3-0, head to head, against Azarenka. However, just like Safina... Azarenka has steadily improved in every loss against Zvonareva. The last time they played was nearly a year ago when Azarenka was ranked 26 and Zvonareva 13. Again, I'm going with Azarenka in this match. She's a much better player (especially mentally) than she was a year ago when she was ranked 26. She's also got momentum and confidence from knocking out the #1 seed and #2 ranked player, Safina.

Here are their head to head results:

For semifinal 2... unless Ana brings everything she has, I'm going with Pavlyuchenkova for the upset. For 17, she has little to lose and in her match win against Radwanska, earlier today, proved she in mentally tough when the pressure builds. She could have melted down serving for her first SF berth in a major tennis tournament in a huge stadium... but didn't and won the match.

I'm gonna guess Finals will be Azarenka vs Ivanovic. Azarenka must be brimming with confidence and the fire of breaking the top 10 for the first time. She pulled back and played strong against Safina and if she can do that against Zvonareva she'll win. Pavlyuchenkova (probably spelled that wrong), but she has never been this far and I wonder if she can handle that? plus Ivanovic must want to prove herself this year.

There is no tV coverage of WTA IW in either North America or Europe. When no network wants to cover it because no one wants to advertise on WTA matches, you can bet the demise of WTA will not be far behind. Nor is there any free streaming sites such as atdhe who wants to cover it. They show huge numbers of matches of men's tennis, even some challengers, but not a woman to be seen.

And no one will have a clue as to who any of these players is or what they look like very soon.

WTA tennis is lacking in consistent top ten tennis, when the #1 player plays a few matches a year and is #1 despite this, when the #2 players can't get to the final of a tournaments or else can't win a title should she get there. Bad news.

What is needed is a stong, consistent player like Henin, or preferably one who looks or is sharapova to draw an audience. And a rivalry such as Nadal/Federer.

Big time troulbe for WTA.

Poundcat, please post some links backing up your claims. Specifically, that WTA is in big financial trouble and that nobody wants to advertise on WTA matches.

i might actually have to go up to front room for
the actual television just to see who does advertise! :D

The way Zvonareva is playing, I almost pity the Ivanovic-Pavlyuchenkova winner. If the winner is Ivanovic, I'll enjoy watching Vera beat her up.

Your wrong, I watched Several of the womens tennis matches live on tv, specifically Ivanovic/Pennetta and Safina/Azarenka on ESPN (or maybe FSN?) in Massachusetts, so yes there was womens tennis covered on TV in North America.

Edit: And if you mean for the Semi's specifically, well its March Madness, even if Graf was playing March MAdness would probably get priority.

Zvonareva vs Ivanovic for the title!

Ivanovic claims she's the fittest she's ever been. She moved well against Pavlyuchenkova, but she still has no idea how to toss consistently. She had some good moments in her last match, but I haven't been that impressed as her last two opponents did more to lose than she did to win.

IMO this final is Vera's to lose. Last year she was 2-6 in finals, but she has improved quite a bit this year. She's playing higher percentage and been quite patient, hitting winners off both wings, and feeling confident in her play. We shall see.

Me too. very happy for vera. horrible, hideous conditions with winds gusting (according to fox spots whicih i ended up watching because tennistv.com breached it's contract to show me the match) up to 50 MPH. What a triumph winning both the singles and the doubles.

myself personally I have never, ever seen that kind of wind during a tennis match.

Also by winning she became the 2nd person to win the singles and doubles title in the same year after Lindsay Davenport, who accomplished that twice, in 1997 and 2000. A great Tournament for her, lets hope this good form continues.
