India's Vikram moon lander appears to have crashed on the moon

Latest news is that the lander indeed landed undamaged but landed in a tilt and therefore lost communication. This is an unforeseen small success.

Oh there are enough dissenters here. Probably not following it closely? People in the opposition and other parties are attacking. That said, the expenses on stupid statues here are much more than what was spent on this mission. What's the harm?

Besides, I don't see space mission failures that did not fail on launch as real failures. Technical glitches always occur. I'd rather have the scientists feel encouraged than feel guilty. They've worked hard and none of them 'wanted' this to happen. Of course as is customary a thorough assessment will surely be made. As I said earlier, Apollo missions have killed people in failed missions. Here it was just a wrong landing of an undamaged lander. This mission is cheaper than Chennai auto rates per kilometre :D
Tilted, ewe seigh? Their can bee ownleigh won prob able coz anne Hee wuz moast definitely whatching itt happen frum Hiz Mira Mesa observatory.

Is it? If they can not regain communication with it. Then it is useless?
I guess so. BUt at least (I suppose) they know what went wrong and what to fix/tweak next time. A pity that just some angle change means that there can be no communication.

If i had been the designer for this kind of thing, I would have built some redundancy, and would have known that communication depended on angle, and accounted for that.

Seems no one thought that lack of communication could also be due to this, but then I have not been following the news for some days.

Last I heard, your immense gravity caused perturbations in its path, causing it to land on Uranus instead. So now it is doomed to send back images of the moist fry tonning nature.

Or a PR save. Find it highly unlikely that an angle is affecting this.

LOL see what is available on the great bay.

@Sentinel has purchased the Vikram lander from the Indian tea stall guy in the moon for Rs 10 and will be selling it for $ 1,000,000 on the site.

Apollo Lunar Descent Rocket Engine: titanium chamber & bell; TRW

$98,000.00
Free local pickup

A 1960's original all-titanium rocket engine combustion, throat and expansion shell; as thick as a dime. Three feet in diameter and 40'' tall. 23 lbs.
This is the design tested and flown in the Apollo Moon program from TRW in Euclid, Ohio.

All these Lunar Module descent engines that were carried into space on the Saturn-V have remained there, a few others are on public display.

This LMDE was a liquid chemical rocket engine consisting of an ablative combustion chamber and nozzle throat held within a continuous titanium shell, covered with a lightweight insulated shield.... with a maximum thrust of 10,500 lbf.

Of the 28 engines delivered to NASA, 9 were tested at White Sands and 10 flew.

This engine is a very late iteration, part number '109403-6' Revision-1, upgraded during manufacture.

This rocket engine is discolored from test firing, and the one inch flanges that held the nodal-point gimbal externally are missing.

This was the only throttleable design built for manned US moon exploration, and it's unique pintle injector (not included) is in every rocket SpaceX has launched.
"The lunar module descent engine probably was the biggest challenge and the most outstanding technical development of Apollo." - a current NASA website
For context, an audio record of the throttle changes made on 20 July of 1969 (NASA):
https://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/ap11_07a__landing_dsea.mp3
This rocket engine is NOT the later bolted and/or tapered chamber single thrust units used for the Delta and other space & test programs.

Bezos 'Blue Moon' BE-7 LH2/LOX lunar descent engine (tested 2019) has the same thrust of 10,000 lbf.

Well I will allow AO17 final tape and WC08 just to be fair. No Djoker matches. I will meet one of the alien creatures and reproduce for the planet to have inter species colonization... depending on how they look.

I would wake up a year early, just so I could roam the ship before everyone else is up just like in Passengers. Obviously I would save everybody when the ship malfunctions and be a hero. Maybe... maybe I will wake you up and let you receive some hero acknowledgements as well.

And I will carry all the matches where Murray beat Federer. Fair is fair since you're not allowing me any Djoker matches.

And I'd like to watch when this mating happens between you and the alien creature. Looks should be irrelevant and you should be man enough to sacrifice yourself to save humanity. I can take over at that point.

But I think we should wake up at the same time. We can make fun of the ones who are still sleeping and read their bios. And in your spare time, please arrange romantic dinners for me.

Well first off, the romantic dinners are a given. It is the duty of the captain to honor this code for the first mate. This being said, looks of the alien do matter greatly. I must be passionate in my reproduction of this new planet. Without the passion, the spawns will not be vibrant and motivated to come together as one species.

Obviously, at some point we will need to recreate a space "pool scene" if you catch my drift. We must agree not to wake anyone else, as this could cause jealousy and eventual overthrow of power.

Murray tapes can come. In fact, rumor has it, there is a celebrity sleeper chamber, and Murray is one of them.

What is this? I have to go through the pool scene while you have passionate sex with one of the Aliens? It doesn't sound quite ... noble given that the purpose of reproduction is to create a new world with the ideal kind of people and not passionaite love making.

How about I blindfold you so that you can imagine the alien as to be me in an attempt to keep the passion alive? Two birds with one stone, no?

Or better yet, I wake Murray up and get it on with him. Why should I be deprived of any passionaite love making especially when I have to get stuck in a wave of water upside down? Or perhaps I won't allow you to have any upper class food given that I am superior to you in that regard as I paid more.

From carrying a satellite on a bullock cart in 1981 to doing a soft landing on the moon in 2023. India has come a long way. Well done and God speed.

What Is the practical significance of this Indian endeavor?
Not just India - several countries are now in the race. It has plenty of practical significance. Space explorations have been the largest contributors historically to new technologies in our lives

What is the actual significance of landing on the moon itself, apart from technological innovations developed to do such? I doubt there are any, but centuries down the track ... maybe.

It is like NASA. The spin-off companies from NASA or their contractors go on to invent new products based on the experience, often of military significance.

Never underestimate the fact that job creation is also one of the big goals.

The stated goals are to mine minerals for use on earth or use the Moon as a hop in travel to distant places like Uranus.

Read the article…they elaborate on all of it. The key items are

1. As sureshs mentioned, exploration of minerals on moon
2. Hopping onto Mars
3. Technologies
4. Water discovery and it’s understanding that can unlock the details of the origins of life (moon is very close to the sun in origins) and is more important than other planets
5. Political leverage
6. Inspiration to create thousands of people interested in engineering and science
7. Job creation

All I can think of

1. I don't remember any minerals revolution from previous voyages, and how exactly do you mine for them?

2. Hopping onto Mars belongs to the distant future, and it's still not clear why that is useful.

3. Technologies are incidental to the project, so we could invent all sorts of more socially useful projects.

4. The water discovery is probably enough to justify it in the interests of pure science, but still ...

5. I'd invest in anti-satellite technologies for political leverage. Making Starlink useless is imperative for some.

6. Inspiration? That's a lot of money for such an emotion, and we don't spend tens of billions extra on art to inspire people.

7. Job creation? You could justify buying nuclear subs on this ground but you could also justify social housing as well.

It is interesting. Yesterday, an Indian news channel interviewed Neil Tyson and asked him about the benefits of lunar missions. He started by saying, as an American, if I was honest, let me tell you why we went to the moon. We went there because we wanted to beat the Soviets. How exactly that would help was not clear, but it was not only about one-upmanship but also a fear that somehow the USSR would use a moon mission to threaten us by propaganda or do something bad from space. When the Soviets stopped, we also did.

He was pretty blunt. Then he went on to praise India profusely.

There is no doubt this is intertwined with nationalism, much like Lendl-JMac matches or India-Pakistan cricket matches. But practical benefits include development of indigenous technology which can be reused in the military.

Of course and not just military. We are forgetting that these very satellite launches today are helping with better weather prediction, predict agricultural changes, improved communication etc. The discovery of water is not some glory hunting. The discovery means understanding the origin of elements and indirectly moving us closer to understanding the universe not to mention that the water can be a source of life in itself. Military is of course a huge reason.
