India's Vikram moon lander appears to have crashed on the moon

Also, the cost of India actually landing a craft on the moon was less than half of the budget of the movie Interstellar.
Interstellar made more than 400 % profit while costing about twice that of Chandrayaan 3 to produce. It was immediate return on investment.
Comparison should be made not with movies (there are Bollywood movies which cost more than half of C3's cost) but with cost of other missions from US and Russia, which cost much more.
There are statues and bridges in India which cost twice as much as C3. The people who are making comparisons are very selective in their choices.

It cost 1/4 of the budget of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Dysentery, and 1/20th of the money bet on one football game(Superbowl 2023).

I've heard your earnings on the rec tour exceed the budget of C3.

The rover is sending back data of temperature variations.

The sun is the next target. Not literally though ;).

Aditya-L1 will be launched on September 2 which will be placed in Lagrange L1. About 1.5 million km from Earth.

2. Hopping onto Mars belongs to the distant future, and it's still not clear why that is useful.

Ehh, colonizing Mars is very important.

Earth won't be enough to sustain the rising population of humans & animals, plus we have to reach another planet before 2100 if we wanna become Type 1 on the Kardashev scale.

Regarding : why India is doing all this space research stuff, it is to claim some share of resources beyond Earth as well. Exploration is important for survival of the hindu race, India is the only big and true hindu country in the world. Christians and Muslims have so many countries. You Christians have 4 continents to yourself (NA, SA, Europe, Australia), this is because of your explorers discovering lands and reaching there to have a share on the resources. Sameway, if USA claims real estate on Mars and other planets then other countries will & should try to claim some for their own as well. These are the reasons why even a 3rd world country like India is into space exploration, if the earth ends in another 60-70 years then we don't wanna perish on earth, our people should also fly to Mars along with the Elon Musk Gang...... Thats why space exploration is very important.

That strikes me as a way of avoiding our problems, not solving them, which is what humans usually do admittedly.

Earth might become uninhabitable after 100 years, by then colonizing mars will be a reality and lot of real estate there will be bought by the uber rich people. Countries which have not reached there will be at a huge disadvantage since real estate will be claimed by countries and divided. All this will happen, it is not running away from problems, it is like making alternate arrangements for one's own security. To harness all the energy on earth we need to have a backup planet in hand in case something goes wrong here, this is how any intelligent species evolve.

What is so surprising about it ?

Eventually Mars will have a church thanks to the west being Christianity dominant & leading in wealth+science
Islam will also have a Mosque there eventually due to Saudi and the middle east having big bucks to buy their way into space. Surely underdeveloped failed nations like Pakistan or Bangladesh or others where Islam is prominent won't have any role in it, when the earth dies then all these countries and majority of its citizens will perish with it.
Now somebody has to take up the initiative for hindus as well, who else but India to do it?

Religion has a role to play in all this, the Indian scientists are not atheists, they are mostly religious people, good for them.

Sorry i missed a lot here.

Why would the earth die or become uninhabitable in 70 or 100 years.
Then that would go for the next planet, right?

Are you sure Bangladesh is "failed". I thought it was doing well, and even has a higher life expectancy than India.

It is not as failed as Pakistan but yes, it is nothing from a grand scheme of things.
Bangladeshis illegal immigrants enter India in plenty via the border just like Mexicans try to enter the US.
Bangaldesh is doing better than Pakistan, I'll give them that.

Mars and Venus seem to be the only choices in the nearish future.

Personally, I'd like to move to a moon of Jupiter, for the stunning view.

I could see space colonization happening in 500-1,000 years but you are really over-estimating our rate of progress.

I am not really worried. I won’t be around to see it even if I am reborn :)

I better get my bucket list of places to see before I bite the dust though!

I don’t know about religion but if colonization is going to happen and it most likely will, nobody is going to build spaceships to move anyone other than their own people so yeah everyone better watch out for themselves.

Colonization will happy in next 50 yrs itself. Elon Musk has plans to do it before he bites the dust :p Pretty sure you are younger than Musk, so you could be around to see it happen.

Good that Nehru started ISRO and now PM Modi is also enthusiastic about funding ISRO and much as they want..

There is a chance Musk is still alive even after 1000 years. At least he might try to:
- freeze his body
- try to do surgery to transfer his brain into a new body
- try to clone himself
- try to transfer his brain data into a robot
- he might not even be human to start with
- etc.......

Can't underestimate science billionaires.

- Freezing the body in a cryo chamber is a good concept, it might not yet be possible but such a tech is being worked on....
- Transfer consciousness into a new body could be possible but that tech might take time to develop.
- Clone himself - again that won't be musk, it would be a clone. The consciousness would be different
- Transfer brain data in a Robot concept will take centuries more to happen I think so
- He is human, he is not an alien

Freezing in a Cryo Chamber is the most feasible concept out of these that could happen but it will take centuries I think so.

But who would agree to move to the colonies?
Unless there is very imminent and certain danger, i imagine people would rather others move.

Otherwise, Maybe the very poor, or criminals might agree, if the incentives are good.

Australia was a land for criminals to migrate to, today it is a prosperous country.

Whenever there is new real estate then whoever moves to take it, the generations after them will enjoy.
Earth is overpopulated anyway, the only concern in Mars is how shall we breathe, if that is solved and we could terraform the planet then in a century that planet will be better than Earth

Okay. So we destroy our own planet, keep waging wars with each other and terraform another planet.
Makes sense.

I feel sad for Mars.
