We dont have to destroy our planet, however we will need a backup planet if in case this gets destroyed, that is the rule of being a type 1 civilization. Currently we are a type 0.7 civilization, we havent reached type 1 status but we will in 80 odd years by 2100, so we will need a backup planet at that time.

Earth might become uninhabitable after 100 years, by then colonizing mars will be a reality and lot of real estate there will be bought by the uber rich people. Countries which have not reached there will be at a huge disadvantage since real estate will be claimed by countries and divided. All this will happen, it is not running away from problems, it is like making alternate arrangements for one's own security. To harness all the energy on earth we need to have a backup planet in hand in case something goes wrong here, this is how any intelligent species evolve.

If Humans live in Mars then farming can be done in greenhouses (like they show in the movie Martian) until we can terraform the atmosphere to suit our needs.
