Info on Wilson Comp 300.

Hi everybody,

does anybody has any info about Wilson Comp 300 racquet? Is it an ancestor of the famous Pro Staff Original 6.0 85 (may be St. Vincent)? Bye.

Ancient thread bump!

This is another mid-1980s Wilson 85sqi stick, made by SanHoSun in 1986-7 I believe (code SKN). It's from the Pro-Staff basic shape (shorter neck and wider throat) with the variable 16x18 pattern, rather than the even 16x19 pattern used on the Graphite Matrix etc models. Unlike PS85 (17.5mm), it is 16.5mm beam, which makes it the same as the Wilson 80/20. Interestingly, rather than 'Graphite Composite' which many others state, it says just 'Graphite Midsize'. The finish is very nice quality, like a Pro Matrix with glossy lacquer over a sparkly brown base colour. High quality leather grip and robust grommets. Weirdly, the brown colour scheme makes the head-size seem smaller than 85sqi, both in-hand and in photos, even though it's identical:

Feel is stiffer and less hollow than a Graphite Matrix, which you notice especially on high-hits that remain solid, but not as solid as the (100% graphite) Sting for example. It feels a bit more lively than a GM too, so I think it's in the 60-80% graphite range. Most likely another department-store only model, but so far it seems very acceptable; coming in at 352g, 32.0cm balance, it is more whippy than most, so I'm looking forward to serving with it.

Serving with the Comp-300 tonight was very good. Not quite the power of a PS85, but more impressive than the Matrix etc 16x19 models. Something about the wider throat and 16x18 just feels more direct and has a nice pop when middled. Flat and slice clearly favoured, but has the whippiness for kicks too. Not sure if I just got lucky with the specs, or whether they are all 1/3oz lighter than most of the Wilson 80s midsizes. Definitely one of the better ones out of all the bargain 85s.
