Injury =/= Cramp

Just to inform people, an injury isn’t the same as a cramp, and isn’t treated the same.

A cramp is an involuntary loss of fitness/conditioning that doesn’t linger and usually doesn’t cause another injury.

An injury is when something on one’s body is physically hurt and unable to return to normal state without immediate treatment/time to heal.

The ATP/WTA allow medicals for injuries, but you’re unable to get a medical for a cramp unless it’s a change of ends. That’s why when Alcaraz asked for a trainer, the umpire informed him that if it’s deemed a cramp, he will either have to push on in the game or forfeit the game for treatment. The trainer, and Alcaraz, deemed it to be a cramp, and Alcaraz agreed to forfeit the game to get treatment.

A cramp is a loss of fitness. It’s not like he rolled an ankle. It’s partly on him for not preparing himself as well as he should have. Not to mention his emotions were way too rampant.

So please, stop saying Alcaraz was injured. He’s not. I can guarantee in an hour he’ll be perfectly fine again. I do sympathize with him in this situation as he wasn’t quite ready enough for this moment.

Paul Annacone said he went and saw the doctor to fix the electrolyte problem and didn't cramp for 5 years. maybe Alcarez should go see that doctor.... like Yesterday.

Havertz at least has a defining moment in his career that you can point to. A moment that he will live forever in the history books. Kane doesn’t have that.
If I was in Kane’s shoes I’d give up every single goal I’ve racked up to be in Havertz shoes. Imagine being the hero in the UCL final for your club scoring the winning goal? Unreal.

Same logic when Messi fans deemed they “didn’t want or need a WC as it’s a glorified 6 game friendly tournament”, whilst Messi himself claimed he would trade every trophy and individual accolade for a World Cup. But that bunch have changed their tune recently…

Or when Arsenal fans say they’re the biggest club in London with 0 European cup’s. Despite their greatest ever manager claiming he’d trade away his PL’s for even a sniff of a CL.

I disagree. I think very few, if anyone, thought fitness would be an issue for Alcaraz.
He’s had issues like this in the past. He was in the exact same situation vs Sinner a little while back. He played an exhausting 2 sets and cramped in 3rd. He recovered better there but the damage was already done.

Muscle cramps are in fact injuries. What, Alcaraz suddenly "just lost fitness" for an hour and struggled to move because he couldn't find it? Cramps have symptoms, can be diagnosed and treated. Additionally "a bout of severe leg cramps may cause damage to the muscle".

Still, of the thousands of pre-match comments, I don't recall any saying fitness /cramping might be an issue for Carlos against Nole.

You should have asked this to djokovic when he quit in 2019 USO 4th round against Stan being 2 sets and a break down

Anything which causes pain and limits your abilities sounds like an injury to me.

Thats right, a cramp is not an injury.
It is a problem with muscles which can be due to various reasons, it can be rectified. But surely not an injury.

But it was not shocking either.

Not the first time.
Yep. Pretty much the exact same thing happened in Miami. He got outlasted physically by Jannik Sinner of all people lol. He doesn't have the fundamentals from the baseline to win tennis matches against the more technically proficient guys without doing an absurd amount of scampering, and his fitness is nowhere near good enough to play that style over 5 sets as things currently stand. This was by some distance the hottest day of the tournament so far and funnily enough it ended up favouring Djokovic.

Of course, a cramp often creates an injury, because if the muscle is extended while it’s in the cramped state, muscle fibers will tear. In Alcaraz’s case, it looked like he mostly stopped from injuring himself when it cramped.

anxiety also causes cramps. the constant yelling to/from his box is a factor

re conditioning, it was reported Raz was not even practising on the offdays... saving energy so to speak.
he pulled out of MC ... sparing himself
in fact even the Rome loss was described here as strategic

along with the 3C's he has tattooed, needs to add another C for conditioning it seems

i think i remember djokovic cramping once and he faked some injury so he could have a time out...
maybe alcarez should have done that

I did foresee the possibility although I didn’t specifically mention cramps.
In the poll, I voted for Alcaraz in 4. The second most likely outcome in my mind is Alcaraz in straight sets. The third most likely outcome might be Djokovic in 5 as he might cause doubts in Carlos’ mind if it goes that long.

My order of likely outcome would be:
  • Carlos in 4
  • Carlos in 3
  • Djokovic in 5
  • Carlos in 5
  • Djokovic in 4
  • Djokovic in 3
I would like to see a 5-setter and may the player playing better at the end with solid self-belief that he is the best player in the world win. I would be shocked if the last two outcomes happen unless Carlos injures himself during the match - that did happen in two of his losses this year at Rio and Miami. So, let’s see what the tennis gods have in store for us.

PS: Will Djokovic be calling Norrie to find out how to beat 2023 Carlos in a big match on clay?
