I just installed Babolat leather grips on my two Yonex Ai 98 sticks, so I'm sharing my experience...

Why I did it? I am using natural gut in hybrid with poly, which adds considerable mass to the string bed. Since I play mostly on clay, I use racquet saver tape to protect grommets from dirt, which also adds 3-4 grams to the head. These two factors combined produce slightly head-heavier balance than I like. So adding a leather grip was a great way to counter balance the racquet and make it more head light. Pronounced bevels are a bonus, too :)

1) First thing I did was measuring my racquet with stock Yonex grip (strung with VS Touch/Luxilon Big Banger Original Rough 1.30). Please note that I also have racquet saver/protection tape on top of the racquet (which adds 3-4 grams).

2) Removing stock grip was a straightforward process, no surprises here. You just need to occasionally peel remaining particles of the original adhesive tape here and there.

3) The end of stock grip was stapled to butt cap

4) The weight of the removed stock Yonex grip is ~11 grams

Babolat leather grip comes with double sided adhesive tape, which really helps (otherwise it would be almost impossible to install the grip without stapling it first). The Babolat leather is hard but pliable enough. The trickiest part was starting the grip and making the first round. It requires constant hard pulling, so on my first attempt I left about 2mm of butt cap exposed due to hard pulling towards the top of the grip, so I decided to start over. The next attempt was much better (if you have a staple gun I warmly suggest using it!)

5) Finished product :)

6) The weight of the strung racquet with the leather grip rose to hefty 350g.

The grip size is approximately half size bigger, however the feeling in hand is superb. However, I will continue to use overgrips, as my hands are very sweaty, particularly in summer.

Tks for the post I play with a ai 98 also. I been using a string combination of Kis multitouch 16 at 60 and Yonex poly tour pro 125 at 50.

I use the Gossen MG10 grip on my My weight is right around 340 grams

I think the head tape is around 10 grams, since the strung weight reported by TW is 326 grams I think (which is in line with my own Ai 98's)? Anyway nice to read!!!

Quite possible, the protective tape feels feather-light (it's shorter in length and lighter than a typical overgrip, which adds ~5g) so my guess was 3-4g. However I forgot that I have two overlapped layers of it could be around 10 grams as you said. I will measure it after removal next time (or even better, I will measure the racquet without strings and tape).

Forgot to tell that my two racquets differed 1g in strung weight with stock grips. Now, after installing leather grips they are within 0.1g from each other! Pure coincidence, though.

Not necessarily coincidence. Often the thing that makes racquets of the same model weigh differently is just the grip. There's rarely any difference between hairpins. At least a very small difference.

Nice, but did you consider the traditional tan coloured leather grip? And how does it play? Must feel superbly solid!

I always use overgrip so base grip color does not really bother me.

Still don't know how this grip change will affect the racquet, but I will find out over the weekend and will share impressions. What I can clearly feel is that it is heavier and that handle feels incredibly good.

If you need a nice, tacky overgrip that is on the thin side, Gamma RZR React is a good choice. Just be careful not to over stretch it during application. It deforms easily.

OK, I played for 3 hours on Saturday for the first time with the leather grips. It was raining the night before and clay courts were soaked in water, so we had to play in a hall (hard court). I stress this because I play almost exclusively on clay, so my strokes are fine tuned to ball speed of bounces on clay. Me and my friend opened a can of new Tecnifibre X-One balls, to treat ourselves ;)

Here are my first impressions after installing leather grips. More or less, everything was as expected:

What I liked:
  • More defined bevels and cleaner feel of the impact
  • Balance of the racquet
  • Serving! Noticably faster and more powerful first serve, while I was fresh (first ~2 hours approximately). Relax you hand, whip the racquet and let its mass do the job.
  • My forehand was working fine, no issues with timing etc. Great plow through and stability, no issues here.
  • Slicing, volleying and blocking hard shots - the racquet felt rock solid on impact and provided great feedback (however I didn't find this racquet to be "muted" even without leather grip).
Issues on the first outing:
  • It was slightly more difficult to move the racquet quickly into position for volleys, due to additional mass.
  • My topspin 1HBH was inconsistent (timing issues). I suspect that heavier racquet and fast hard court punished my late backhand preparation (this is something that I need to improve, anyway).
  • After two hours, it became difficult to smoothly and timely pull/accelerate the racquet upwards on serves (my arm and hand were fatigued). I will have to play more or exercise more! ;)

String broke on one of my Ai 98s today, so it was a good opportunity to measure how much weight is added by stringbed, head protection tape and overgrip:

1) Two layers of head protection tape, installed from 10 to 2 - weight: 6.0 g

2) Stringbed (Global Gut 16g in mains / Yonex Poly Tour Pro 1.25 in crosses) - weight: 18.7 g

3) Tecnifibre Pro Contact overgrip - weight: 5.6 g

4) "Naked" stick with Babolat leather grip installed - weight: 328.5g
