Instead of Mixed Doubles.

Why not have coed teams? One court of Men's singles, one court of Women's singles, one court of Men's doubles, one court of Women's doubles, one court of mixed.

All the fun of having guys and girls on the team, all the team spirit, 1/3 of the mixed drama.

You could do it by X.0 or X.5 levels.

Example in 9.0 you could have a 5.0, 4.5, or 4.0 play singles, and doubles could be 4.0/5.0 or 4.5/4.5. 8.5 would only have 4.0&4.5 on the team (no 5.0/3.5 combos) and so on.

You basically just described WTT. Very limited out here but same general format and teams have to play I believe at the highest rated pairing.

Great idea. I would actually play on such a team. Whereas not a chance I would play on a current mixed team.

To keep logistics simple keep it all at level e.g. all players male/female must be at most 4.5 to play 4.5 league but 4.0 can play up (not my preference to allow playing up, but keeps it consistent with existing leagues).

6. DETERMINING RATINGS OF PLAYERS AND THE APPROPRIATE DIVISION FOR A TEAM:

All players must have an NTRP rating. Ratings from the start of the local league will be used. Since all sections do not use the “early start ratings”, they will not be recognized by WTT.

If at the start of the local league a player does not have a rating on file with the USTA , WTT will accept a self-rating. This self-rating is subject to the approval of the local league director and the WTT National Office upon completion of a USTA Player Profile sheet.

  • Ratings will only be accepted on a .5 basis (i.e., 3.5, not 3.4).
  • The average NTRP rating of the TOP two men and TOP two women is used to determine a team’s level of competition. (Example of top 4 players: 4.0 + 3.5 + 3.0 + 3.0 = 13.5. 13.5 divided by 4 players = 3.375. This team would register for the 3.5 & under division.)
  • No team may carry a player more than one NTRP point above the division entered.

WTT is fun for about three matches. Then it gets really old really quick.

(1) There is a whole lot of sitting around. They don't play the matches concurrently. First it's dubs, then singles, then mixed. So half the time you're sitting around waiting for the women's court to finish up.

(2) The scoring format blows. You only play one set...and it's no-ad, playing lets. I can get used to the let courts, but no-ad scoring just sucks.

(3) Because of the scoring system, they tally up the number of games won and that's how they determine the winner.

(4) The "money" court is dumb. This a your #1 mixed doubles court. In order to win the duel, you have to win the money court. If you're up by, say, 5 games as a team but you lose the money court, you keep playing games until you win one more game, or the other team catches up and wins...whichever comes first.

There is a lot of drinking, which makes it fun. But the format isn't my cup of tea.

Holy whining batman!

(1) There isn't that much sitting around since it's no-ad, no let serves, and only 1 set. Also due to the scoring format there is incentive to finish your opponent off quickly.

(2) The scoring is fine, it is all designed to make the game faster paced rather than dragging on.

(3) Different scoring, every game matters. If USTA used this there would be no (or at least a lot less) throwing games to manage your rating as it could very well cost your team the match.

(4) Money court isn't any dumber than being on court and knowing your match doesn't even count anymore.

I can understand and respect that it isn't your cup of tea, personally I prefer the old way myself also. That doesn't mean I cant see the appeal of WTT format for some people.

I've played a few WTT events, and I had fun. It's not real tennis, and I wouldn't want to do it more than once or twice a year, but it's fun.

+1.

I didn't like WTT at all.

1. Too much standing around. There is zero standing around waiting during a USTA team match. But with WTT, you are waiting for another court to finish or waiting to be subbed in (see below).

2. Scoring format blows. Before you get into a match, it's over. Part of the challenge with USTA play is figuring out your opponent's weaknesses and finding a way to turn it around. No time for that in WTT, especially given the subbing (see below).

3. I don't care how they determine the winner, so long as I get to play.

4. I don't understand the scoring or even the need for different scoring.

5. The subbing sucks. Totally sucks. Here you are in the middle of a match and thinking of what you might do next and . . . yank. Gotta go stand around some more. Or worse, here you are standing around, your muscles tightening up, and before you know it you are running onto a singles court where your teammate was down 0-3 and you're supposed to save the day?

6. Singles when you don't play singles. There I was on the sidelines, minding my own business, and my captain says, "Cindy, do you play singles?" "No, I do not play singles." "Well, Becky is getting smoked; can you go see if you can do anything? In a flash, I was out there against a 4.0 singles player when I hadn't played more than five singles matches in 10 years. By the time I got out of the habit of hitting into the doubles alley and remembered to serve from the center hash, the match was over. If you want me to play singles in USTA, then I need to go practice because, like I said, *I don't play singles.*

Yep, WTT is not for me.

All of your criticisms are valid. Scoring is odd and the sets feel too short. There's no computer rating, your team is based on the average NTRP, and organizers are very hesitant to bump people up/down. The end result is a huge skill disparity between the best and worst teams within a division.

That said, I still play WTT league and enjoy it. I just don't take it too seriously.
