quick question....how can it possibly be used as a phone? Isn't it too big to take with you places? and I can't imagine holding it while having a conversation on it. I'm puzzled.
The OP was a little misleading, the subsequent posts were correct. It's a big iPod touch more than it is a big iPhone, it's not being marketed as having phone functionality, and even if it does, it won't replace a phone.
As for a netbook - seems to be their answer, doesn't it.... I'm about to buy a macbook pro in a 13, this release won't change that.

It is meant to be Apples version of the notebook. What I meant by comparing it to the iPhone was that it has all the same features minus the phone but with a few extra features. Not meant to be pocketable but still to be portable, screen is 9.3" I think so it's actually quite small and only 0.5" thick!
But it's apparently cheaper than an iPhone without a contract which is quite an interesting move by Apple.

I waited for this to come out before I pulled the trigger on a netbook. I'm still going with a netbook. More storage (250GB), functions closer to a computer than an iTouch, and a lot cheaper.
I'm going to order an Asus 1005PE-PU17. 14 hours of battery life as well and I can put Microsoft Office on it. $368 from Amazon.
If you go to the official Apple website they have a video about the ipad which was pretty cool. (link) I don't know about this, it looks basically like an ipod touch but bigger. I mean they could have added some new features such as HD quality for watching videos, a more advanced graphics chip for playing games and a built in camera. I don't see this as revolutionary in anyway when its basically an oversized itouch.

I've heard it may be one of apple's most important products to date. It will hopefully be able to load textbooks on it which means every school kid can read from the iPad instead of having to lug around a million books with them. Doctors will be using them as medical charts to save paper. We'll just have to wait and see.

It's more like a color Kindle with benefits.
I've seen the kindle and spoken to an owner and they love those things. It uses what they call liquid or electronic paper or something. Basically text is extremely clear and sharp.
It's the only device I saw that made me say "ok I could read an entire book on that".
If the iPad can do that plus the other goodies there will be an enthusiastic niche for it. But unless it gets real popular I think Amazon will try to do something with publishers to try to C block apple.

Hehe yes I've noticed that. I don't see that it will completely eliminate wasting so much paper and trees, but I feel it can make a dent on it. As they were also saying, the iPad will be a much better 'book size' than a computer, and can be read from various angles. I know a laptop can be too but there's just something uncomfortable about the way you read off a laptop.
Text books would be great. I just paid almost 600$ for my wifes books this semester if I could cut that in half an ipad would pay for itself in one semester.
I read that the text book publishers are a little scared of going ebook and only one or two of the big text book publishers is even trying to do ebooks right now.
But maybe if apple could make it Kool that would change.
That's good they didn't make this into a phone, imagine talking on this thing. First of all I rarely read books so I could care less about making a device which makes reading easier and more accessible. Watching a movie is more entertaining then reading a book, for example watching Avatar is 10x better then a book. Books have no special effects or CGI it's just paper filled with lines of words, what a borefest.

Actually, since it is Bluetooth enabled it wouldn't be bad at all. Just need to have a wireless headset, or heck even a regular iphone headset will work.

ipad seems to be a larger ipod touch with a few more features.
Only place I could really see wanting to use one of these is while hanging out on the couch or in bed to surf e-mail and web while watching TV, or to watch movies - but I already do that on my laptop.
Another downside is that sometimes it's nice to have a screen that can stand vertical if you are using it in the kitchen to cook a recipe or read a game guide/maps while gaming. Ipad will need some sort of stand to do this.
If I travel and need a computer, I'd probably want a bit more functionality and the use of a keyboard of a laptop - unless I was only taking the computer for entertainment purposes - then the ipad is perfect.
It's compact, very cool, and the touch interface is slick and easy to use, but doesn't seem practical outside of entertainment. However, I think the slick interface and flexibility of using a 3G network gives it a leg up over most net books for doing simple tasks. Seeing how it lends itself to casual use, I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes a common computer to have around the house if we see a price drop to around the $150 - $200 level.
We'll see what happens once the clones come out. I'm not too thrilled to be locking into Apple's services for music, books, movies, etc.

Other cool thing iPad has super nice Led backlit screen so its' super bright and clear with almost perfect blacks and the screen will last as long or longer than you'll own the device.
For 500$ I might get it.
I need to see it in person but this will probably be my next laptop....

I mean it would look weird if your talking with your head pressed against it. Actually that would be kind of hard gripping the ipad with one hand and talking at the same time.

Well, it's not just books, it seems to be a better way to read online publications.
As for books being boring. I loved Avatar, I play games, and watch movies, but sometimes those media fall short of the depth of story that you can find in a book. It just takes a little imagination to turn those pieces of paper with lines of words into an incredible narative experince.
I'll give you that the visuals in Avatar were amazing, but the narative/story line was extremely weak.

It's not what I thought it was going to be but I still think it will be a success. You could call it a giant iPhone or iPod Touch. I'm impressed with the price structure. Most people thought it was going to be about a grand and the entry level model is half that price. 3G is an additional $130 and will cost you $30 a month from AT&T for an unlimited data plan. The WiFi is 802.11n but there are no 802.11n hotspots unless you have one at home. I'm assuming the iPad will have a built-in speaker (hopefully volume will be robust) but not sure if it has a built-in microphone. Not sure if Skype will be available for iPad. Also curious if current iPhone/iPod Touch will have to repurchase Apps to run on iPad. Still no Flash for web browsing. Can't wait to play with it.

the reviews that are pouring in from the techies are overwhelmingly positive. I'm not exactly sure what the Ipad is doing that a touch can't do but I'm excited to try them out. I don't follow Apple like they are a cult but I do like the ipod I have and my laptop compared to the windows systems.
The biggest knocks so far on the Ipad are: No flash capabilities, no video cam for video conferencing and the inability to be able to multi-task on it. I think you can't open 2 windows at once or something like that. So, you couldn't type an email while having a movie going in the background which is pretty inconvenient. The flash memory is a bit concerning since a large percentage of web content is based on flash.
I definitely like some of the features and everyone is saying it's amazingly fast. It's basically a consumption device but you are unable to produce anything. I think I'll wait for the 2nd generation to come out where they'll fix all the bugs, add the flash and some other features, and then sell it for a few hundred less.

The biggest thing to me is you can't run more than one program. That's hella lame, that alone is a deal-breaker for me. With all that space and processor, I could watch a movie, play poker, chat on TT, and shop or any number of things all at the same time. That would be cool. I already own hundreds of iPhone apps, but only running one pixelized app at a time? No thanks.

The iPhone screen is tiny, especially for how much it can do, so I think it's a legitimate concept. Now if or when they jailbreak the iPad, then I may look into it. A lot of possibility there.

I like the idea of the iPad. I can envisage myself laying on the couch surfing the web, reading an e-book, or playing games with this thing. Even though netbooks are small, they can be cumbersome when trying to lay back and relax.
I'm really curious about how strenuous on the eyes the iPad will be for reading e-books. To me this might make or break the iPad. I don't think the iPad has e-ink like the Kindle, Nook, or Sony Reader.
Whether or not it succeeds I think iPad like devices will be popular in the future. Most people don't need huge computing power. They want to read, surf the web, play games, watch videos, and look at pictures. They want to this with a portable, easy to use device.

It doesn't seem to have a USB port, but apple sells a so called "iPad Camera Connection Kit" which does the trick.

Really poor this time around from Apple. I had hoped it would have been a tablet laptop, which would have been sweet; a multi-touch Apple tablet computer would have been perfect for what Apple strives to be: an entertainment hub, both for those making the entertainment and those being entertained (movie making, music making, etc...).
I was really hoping for a tablet laptop because I could have gotten one of those and saved a bunch of cash instead of buying seperate MIDI-enabled synth pianos and a few sound wave editors (think really advanced, specialized mixers), all of which could have been perfect for such a device, I'd be able to use VSTi'S with my hands and I would have been able to edit music on the fly using Ableton Live with my hands instead of buying a bunch of extra stuff.
Instead of giving us something somewhat new, you just give us a larger version of the iPhone and iPod Touch, but with only a fraction of the practicality of those two devices. Thanks Apple. Again, you screw up big time.

I'd be interested to know what everybody was expecting that they are so disappointed in this? Did you expect Apple to make a $500 laptop when they sell tons of laptops for over $1200 already? I am bummed on no flash, but that won't last if they want this to be the future kindle/pub reader.

You can load OS 10.5 on any pentium computer so you could buy a Dell or whatever and load the new OS and have your wish. What programs you using for music creation? I am a big GBer and love the fact that it comes loaded up for free.

Ummm, what the hell? Innovation? It's a freaking massive touch, its even teh same OS. Lacks flash support, no multitasking and specs equivalent to a 2002 laptop.
