Kind of interesting that the definition of a high-level "journeyman" gets his own named thread. The culmination of a decade of journeymanning. Bravo, Adrian!
Well I'm not particularly a fan ( apparently he's been a little "brusque", to use his native French idiom, with tennis equipment operatives in the past ) but he certainly deserves a thread - no ? The incredible Hulk is his pigeon !

Amazing feel for the ball, surprising wheels, high tennis IQ.

Refuses to check draws and if somebody tells him who he's playing in the next round, he'll cover his ears and start yelling. He literally doesn't want to know his opponent until he gets to the court - and sometimes has no idea who that person is.

Struggled with wrist injuries in his youth so he tried changing his forehand grip, resulting in the odd junkball shot we see today.

Apparently gets his tennis clothing from the Wal-Mart clearance rack.

Is this for real? Does anyone know what type of string he uses (poly, gut, multi...)? I may just have to string up a racquet at that tension simply to see what it feels like.
He is using Alu Power:

Yes he's above average for a journeyman but let's stop short of nominating him for the Hall of Fame.

Thanks for that. I've got some cheap old poly lying around, so I'm gonna trying stringing a racquet up at 24lbs, just to see what it is like.

But it seems clear that he has some insane levels of hand/eye coordination. Everyone on the ATP tour is probably well above average in that regard, but seeing some of the shots he hits, and hearing about his setup, you have to think he is a true "freak" in that regard.

Allegedly, Mannarino never look at draws as he never wants to know which player he is about to face. That seems crazy to me but who knows.
Basically yes. He tries to avoid finding out but will allow someone to tell him up to a couple hours before the match I think.
Mannarino is also known to use the lowest tension on the tour: 19 pounds.
17KG x 13KG at the moment, so more than 19 pounds but still one of the lowest tensions on tour.

Fun Fact: Mannarino is number 6 in the world when it comes to second serve points won. But he's under 6 foot so he's only number 40 in the world on first serve points won despite arguably the best slice serve on tour. His return needs work, since his height shouldn't be a big obstacle there yet he's not a top 30 returner. Great guy for amateurs to study and copy if they struggle with arm issues.

Sad that this wild wizard ride of Mannarino's had to come to an end, especially against his "easiest" opponent thus far. I think the rain delays didn't help him, nor did Eubanks probably being a complete unknown to him.

Eubanks also seemed to play really well. Don't know if he was just getting lucky and making shots he usually doesn't make (and painting a lot of lines), or if he has some big weakness that most players know about and exploit, but which our hero would obviously be willfully oblivious to.

And it was still a very close match, with Mannarino having a significant number of break points that he just couldn't convert.

Yeah I was really looking forward to the Medvedev vs Mannarino match up. Mannarino actually has that head 2 head 3-2 albeit the wins were before 2019.

Well it seems like part of Medvedev's style is to annoy his opponents, but I think Mannarino could actually out annoy him. Would have been great. Let's hope we get it somewhere down the line (especially on grass).

Someone said in the other thread that he wears a hoodie, even when it's blazing hot, and likes to lurk w/o anyone bothering him. So maybe he's doing HW and scouting opponents. Or just enjoys watching tennis.

Someone also said that he's a tech geek and loves to measure his racquets whenever he sees an rdc machine at tourneys. Sounds like he would fit in here.

Finally back to what we expect. We true believers know he is better than Medvedev, and today was just proof.

Seriously though, happy for him, and as 80s New Wave said, Medvedev looks like a fish out of water.

Adrian Mannarino hardly gets a mention here, he must be the most under the radar player ever.
I find him hard to like but is he any good? He seems to hanging around a lot lately. Odd player.
Any expert here care to to say if he's getting better? Or good ? Or just lucky lately.

I love the way you know exactly where I'm coming from ! @robyrolfo LOL !

No one in this place, this clown infested lunatic asylum, has been able to understand me
through my abstruse, sarcastic, ironic and clumsy text as well as you.

Congratulations Sir/ Madam whom ever you are.

Thanks for the kind words. I think the feeling is mutual... I think...

Shame he lost to the Mario brother Thompson, yet Mario FH was not pushing as always and Mannarino had mostly issues off that that side.
Both players have usually weak FHs but Thommo was on song on that side which is very rare.

I wonder who will have the best career when he retires versus his compatriot '"The Magician?"
If Adrian had a DH FH a tad more length, he would probably have less errors off that side.

i mostly know him as the guy that strings ridiculously low tension (20-30 lb range)

and being under the radar..? i think he is on the radar at an appropriate level. the ATP is filled with so much talent.

He is using Alu Power:
WOW,, i have no idea how he controls the ball with that tension,, and alu power is extremely powerful,,, i know i use it

Mannarino is great but De Minaur is better on grass

This aged well.

Anyway, I see the Wizard Mannarino is making yet another little run. Unfortunately he is now in a nightmare matchup for me in the quarters, against Moutet. Two quirky, funky Frenchman that I enjoy watching. Not sure who to root for...
