He's now up to 23 in the world in the live rankings.

If he were a soccer player with that ranking he'd be making more than £200,000 per WEEK. That's elite, but in tennis there are delusional fans who think you're weak if you're over 20 and have never been a world no. 1.

If he wins the next match (difficult if Zverev is playing well, but doable if he can get Zverev off rhythm) or does well enough at the US Open (few points to defend), he'll go to a new career high, even if he skips Winston-Salem.

He can definintely beat Zverev by throwing him off rythm. And good comparison with soccer players ; I think Mannarino is among the best in the world, skill-wise, but lacks the mentality to really push through. Everyone has similar playing styles now, so having a different game set, like Mannarino, Brooksby, Medvedev, can really make the difference like in the old days were everyone had a distinct style.

I've been making this point about soccer/football for a while now. Any player on a top 10 team in the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga is certainly elite (and I'm being conservative, there are many more players and teams, but just for argument's sake).

So that's 30 teams with 20 players (again, overly conservative) on each roster. That comes out to 600 players, meaning if you are a top 600 soccer/football player you are certainly at the elite level, and making WAY more money than any tennis player outside the top 100. And I'm being conservative. There are more than 30 elite teams in the world, and more than 20 players on each roster. But you get the idea...

Clarification, he would need to make the QFs to get to a new career high during the US Open. But he only has 90 points to defend for the rest of the season, so there's a chance that he could make it by the end of the year if he plays well.

If my favorites are not on and there are several matches ro choose from, I always tune into his match. I've learned to love his unorthodox style with zero take-backs. He just turned 35. What or how was he doing like 10 years ago? Cos I can't remember.
He was pretty awful back when he had hair

12 years ago he reached 49 which was his career high at that time but shortly after he dropped out of the top 100 for a year & a half, then slowly worked up to his current career high of 22, which he reached 5 years ago. Dropped back down to 72 (briefly) a couple of years ago. He's now at the highest level of his career or close to it.

Looks like our boy is making yet another little run. I just wish he was at the ATP Finals. I honestly think he might deserve it more than some others...

Fully expecting Mannarino to quietly complete his best year on tour at age 35 and win here. Wasn't some fan of some other player saying just the other day that none of the other guys in Djokovic's age group were hanging around winning? Love that Mannarino has been, also, feasting on younger guys to add a few titles to his resume this year. I really enjoy his game and that he is having fun during the CIE.

...because he wasn't doing much. Welcome to the Career Inflation Era. This is one aspect of it I am glad to see.

Even with a title, he would fall exactly 5 tiny points short of finally cracking the top 20... Painful, but he should have a decent chance to get it done early next year, when he defends very little down under.

Still, chubby Kotov will be a tough out, and whoever makes the final in the top half would be even thougher.

You sure? ATP live rankings says that he will go to 1,765 points, which will put him 5 points AHEAD of Cerundolo. It's likely that Humbert will win the title in Metz, but if Humbert doesn't and Mannarino does, that would put Mannarino at number 20. If both of them win the title, Mannarino will go up to a new career high of 21, which might be more important to him anyway.

could be... I was looking at the live-tennis website but it sometimes fudges up... (though in fairness, so does the ATP one)

Magical Mannarino!

Confirmed - Manna still 5 points BEHIND Cerundolo in the newly released official rankings. More work left for the Wizard...

And that is the type of company he belongs in!

I only saw the key games in the third set of the final, but I loved the way he was playing. Manarino seemed to be hitting a lot of balls so that they were relatively short/low bouncing (and not necessarily with slice, sometimes just flat/topspin), making the big, lumbering and mechanical Brit have to get down low to hit a decent ball back. Seemed like a great strategy (at least it definitely seemed intentional) in a lot of rallies that frustrated Draper a lot and caused some errors.

It really is amazing that this guy keeps showing us how smart, tactical tennis can overcome power (and height) even at the highest levels of the game.

Agreed with all. Plus he's really fast on his feet. I like non-traditional type players.

I noticed that too: short angles, especially on draper's backhand. Tough ball to hit topspin w a 2hbh when you're reaching forward on a short ball. Good match up for a lefty forehand vs weaker side backhand.

With Tstitsipas having pulled out of the ATP finals, why haven't they called in Mannarino? Hurcaz is a nice enough guy, but we all know that Adrian was the real star of this year's ATP tour. Definitely better than Fritz right now.

Yep, exactly. Plus Draper is pretty tall, so getting down low is extra tiring and difficult. And since we know that Mannarino doesn't like to know anything about his opponents before the match, he must have figured it out himself on the fly.

Yep. Looks like the official Live rankings were wrong about how many points he was on. I'm surprised it's that unreliable.
