Is Berrettini a dying man's version of Courier?

I mean, Courier won 4 Slams making Final at all 4 even taking a set of Sampras on grass. So, Mateo won't ever sniff that success. But the whole knock on Jim was he ran around the backhand and serve could be read so tour figured him out.

Berrettini's backhand is much worse. It's so bad that plenty of Challenger regulars have superior backhands.

How long before he's struggling to make Slam Quarters?

Berrintini is ranked so high due to his grass season. On Grass it favours Serve + FH combo which is what his game is about. It also helps hide his awful BH as slicing is a good tactic on grass.
But will he ever make another Wimbledon final? His draw this year was pretty lax.

Berrettini is one of those serve and forehand players with terrible backhands that try to hit as many inside out forehands as possible because they know their backhands are very bad
Older posters will remember Carlos Moya, very similar to Berrettini. The Italian has a bigger serve, but the Spaniard was more consistent with less unforced errors

Berretini backhand is probably the worst in ATP top 150

This guy simply lives off the serve + FH. Is he American by chance ?

I just posted in another tread but i feel like sharing this cause i'm actually upset with Berrettini and his coach!!!

You could take one arm off of Berrettini and he would not know! The damn man does not have a back hands besides that slice crap!
He is embarrassing to watch and Djokovic is having so much fun picking on his back hands!!!!

What did Berrettini learn from his losses at FO and Wim?.....hit more floating slice backhand in the middle of the court

The only thing comparable is that both reached a Wimbledon final and won a set against one of the greatest Wimbledon champions of all time. In everything else Courier is head and shoulders above Berrettini. I wish for the Italian that I could say "yet", but I doubt it.

Again, do people not read titles? A DYING MAN'S VERSION of Courier.

Yes, but I don't think his style looks similar either. And he has a much better serve, slightly better forehand and decisively weaker backhand.

no because courier had no serve

Other than hitting inside out forehands as a weapon, I don't understand the Berrettini and Carlos Moya comparison at all. Moya had a very solid backhand and was a fitter and faster mover than Mateo. I don't remember Moya slicing his backhand very much or getting picked on with that stroke by opponents. He just ran around the backhand to use his forehand to win points more effectively, which is what 99% of the tour does. Plus, Moya made two Slam finals, losing to Sampras in Australia and winning the French, and made it all the way to the #1 ranking. You can't win the French with a bad backhand because players have more time to attack it. Even Courier's backhand (even though it was ugly looking) wasn't bad. I don't see Berrettini as a guy that will ever make it to #1.

(In my mind, a better comparison for Berrettini might be Raonic, with both being heavy footed guys with big serves and forehands, but limited movement and weaker backhands.)

Did you notice that Matteo's serve tosses look quite a lot different? Djokovic was returning some of those 130+ serves as though he knew exactly what was coming. Matteo probably was giving away his serves with the tosses.

Moya had a better backhand and better footwork though, so he could make that baseline style work.

Do you know what happens when a stubborn nail metaphorically "argues" with a hammer?

Yeah, that's right: "The Hammer" will eventually put it in its place.

Berrettini is much much better than Courier!!!

You guys always hope the next guy up will certainly beat Djokovic, so become disillusioned when he can't. It will happen with Zverev too! I knew Matteo wasn't going to beat Novak, and think Zverev won't either.

You’ve got to be kidding to compare Berrettini to a guy who won 4 slams and was a #1 ranked player. Courier was 50 times the player the Italian ever will be. And guess what? Courier was not a choker.
If Courier needed to play Federer, Djoko or Rafa he would also be on 0 slams.

Courier ran around the backhand because his forehand was so good. He still had a backhand.
Berry dreams of being a fifth of what Courier was.
Let's not overdo it. Courier would also get his serve neutralised and his backhand eaten alive by Djokovic.

I believe absolutely nothing besides to wear yellow wrist band to try to deceive Nole LOL But his team too is ridicule if they though Matteo would make it pass Nole!
Vergona Berrettini!!!!!

That reminds me of a young Ivan Lendl before he develop a fearful hard hitting backhand that could go down the line or go cross court at blazing speed.

I wish he would move on and get out of Italy to learn to play tennis but the truth might be that he is too lazy and comfortable home!

Berrettini has a hammer for his forehand and serve but a spatula for his backhand.
Novak exploited that fact yesterday and at Wimbledon.

But he played in 1991, 1992. Not ever against Djokovic.
I know, I'm saying it's a different sport now. We shouldn't over-glorify the skills of past champions when the game has evolved past them.

Guys with a big hole in their game from the back off the court can't dominate anymore. We're not that impressed by Berrettini's insane forehand and serve because Djokovic can neutralise them.

What a deplorable ideologue you are, ugh. Absolutely wretched dismissal of the past for this aethereal concept of evalushen that has no basis being anything besides adaptation to changed equipment and conditions. Nobody sane thinks historical scientists were fools in comparison because their discoveries are common knowledge now, but somehow it's wildly different here.

Without bumping into Djokovic I think he’d of won Wimbledon last year. I’m not sure if he will always serve as good & hit first forehand like he did last year winning queens first where incidentally the courts are faster than Wimbledon. His BH is bad though, reminds me a bit of Rusedski.

Jim Courier was solid as it gets, I've watched numerous matches and he was hitting it well ( the backhand ), it's just that he had a big forehand and he was used to dictating play from FH side so he ran around a lot. Berrettini is 1.96 ( I think that translates to a tad over 6"5 ) so he is certainly not going to move as quickly as Jim was moving and his BH is simply just a weakness. He's okay but not Jim Courier good as far as I'm concerned not even close.

Courier had a better backhand, moved better, had more of an all court game, and was a more consistent grinder. The inside out forehand was killer but his forehand in general was very good. He was more placement than power.

Bertinni is just a big serve and big forehand.

I really don’t see much comparison to their games.
