Is Djokovic better than Sampras (in his prime)?

I'm creating this thread with a clear title so that it can be bumped later one way or another.

I was very high on Sampras, but Djokovic's play this year has convinced me that he will become one of the all-time greats.

Sure Sampras won fourteen slams, but Djokovic is from Serbia; Serbia . . . man.

So, who is better, Novak Djokovic now or Pete Sampras in his prime?

Umm, gee! That is a tough one, but I'd have to go with Sampras on this one (this remark is glistening with sarcasm). Sampras already won a GS title by Djokovic's age, and their games don't match up at all (Sampras with the dominating serve and volley mostly, and Djokovic with his mostly baseline all court).

Well, logically it's possible for every top player to become the greatest. The possibility exists. So Novak can. But will he? I don't think so and he's certainly nowhere at this stage to be considered greater than Pete Sampras.

Without question, he does have the game (among the current crop of baseline bashers) to win several slams and go on to become an all time great.

He won three masters shield this year and beat Nadal and Federer. Clearly, he's the best ever. Why do we have to have a poll. It is so obvious.

If you could get all five of the other guys in their prime on one side of the net, Djokovic with still beat them. They could even serve five balls all at once, he he would still break them!

How about if I throw in JMac, Connors, Lendl, Edberg, Becker, Don Budge, Krammer? These twelve guys all in their prime on one side, hitting twelve balls simultaneously against Djokovic and he'll still win.

djokovic is not even close to sampras as a player, he will be very good, im saying max 6-8 slam, but fed will be right there for wimby for the next 5 years, nadal will be there at the french for the 6-8 years, so either australia of us open are his best bets, i would be more so towards the us open bc depending how hard he works for australia that one will up in the air.

I see youir point, he has managed to beat the best player of all time - Federer (something Sampras never managed even on his favourite surface), and also taking out the worlds no2 and no3 at the same event. I am not sure how you got my post but lets say its premature for this. I am from belgrade and I still think he might be nr 1 in future and everythign but goat , dont know , you never know that. Most likely not but lets say everyone has different favourite player so goat is not something that can be determined just like that ? Also, like it or not djokovic is playing in an era where there is no dominant serve and volley player like sampras. I don't think that Djokovic could handle that style of play, however i think that he has the ability to win the U.S. Open.

Novak Đoković is certainly a good player but he has a way to go yet to prove he is superior to Sampras.

I like to see plenty of evidence in top flight events in order to evaluate and rate a player. While Đoković's form has been good he needs prolong this period and prove it is not a fleeting run of good form before I would be even willing to consider him a top 3 player.

I think many of the threads on this site relating to Đoković are somewhat premature in hailing his greatness.
