Is Djokovic gonna go on another tear in 2022?

Usually, Novak tends to destroy the tour after he gets down

2018 RG - looked like he wanted to really quit tennis after the Cecchinato match, then goes on a tear from 2018 Wimb - 2019 Wimb, winning 4/5 slams

2020 USO - DQ'd, people thought this would effect him badly then got ripped apart in 2020 RG...proceeds to win 3 slams in a row in 2021

2021 Olympics/ USO - Olympics hopes dashed and got caught up emotionally, same with CYGS hopes dashed in the most anti-climatic fashion, starts crying mid match...also no #21

are we in for another Djokovic storm in 2022?

More like Medvedev storm in 2022. Djokovic might not even play the Australian Open. Quest for CYGS has drained him emotionally and physically. He's spent.

He will win the CYGS next year. When Djokovic fails to hit a milestone he gets more fired up to meet it the next chance. He’s also going to stick around until the next Olympics. It would have been better for tennis entertainment for him to win the golden slam and retire so we can stop watching metronomic defensive tennis win everywhere

Hard to say. His first big tear in 2011 ended after the US Open. He was pretty depleted then and afterwards leveled off a bit to win "only" one major a year for a while. Then we had 2015-2016 – a bit longer period of domination, but then an even bigger drop-off. Didn't recover until mid-2018.

He seems pretty mentally and physically drained right now. Wouldn't be shocked to see him get back to business and snag a couple more majors next year, but I don't really see a three-slam year and certainly not a calendar slam.

The US Open was certainly emotionally and mentally taxing on Djokovic but he is certainly capable of coming back between now and January. I see Djokovic as a slight favorite at the Australian, even money at the French, the clear favorite at Wimbledon, and even money at the US. Based on this, I think he's the most likely person on tour to "storm" through 2022.

Definitely don't see him going on a tear.

But he is still not a player anyone wants to face, anywhere, on any surface. He is at worst the 2nd favorite for every Slam next year according to bookies, and will be undeniably favored at Wimby.

My prediction for the rest of his career is that he will have a lot of losses to NextGen, he'll look old, and he'll have dips in form, but at the end of the Slams he will still be in the SFs/Fs quite consistently. And if you do that enough times you can get lucky, with a draw, injuries, or matchup. So he'll probably pull 1-3 Slams out of the hat so to speak. But no more domination.

I hope not, I rather see the next gen wins from now on. No more slam for Fedalovic.

20-20-20...endless debates.

Probably 1 mayor next year Oz or Wimby. Left shoulder is a problem for some time, serve and forehand are to inconsistent the whole year. Recovery is also a problem if it goes to 5 sets.

So hard to say. When players (even as athletic and durable as Djoker) enter their mid-30s it is very hard to predict when they will start to slow down. If Novak can delay Father Time another year, he could win two more slams next year.

Just as when Roger Bannister broke the unbreakable 4 minute mile and others quickly followed, the nexgeners now know that Joker can be beaten in a slam final and will want a piece of that action. Zverev, Tsisti, Thiem and others will now compete with the knowledge that it can be done and there will be no more grand slams for Djokovic.

Believe it or not, the best tennis players don't have the emotional development of 5 year olds. The idea they didn't know it could be done and now suddenly they do is infantile. The truth is that Novak was pretty rubbish in that final. But people here can't seem to imagine any other than the latest thing to happen.

Think he's a little old for that, this felt like a final desperate push.

Pressure is off.
Probably a well balanced mix of players winning majors going forward.
Could see another 2 major year or two.
Might hold the fort at Wimbledon losing here or there until he is 40.
He might focus on winning another US Open after feeling some love there.
He should be good until 38-40.
Feels good the pressure is off whew.

Perhaps yesterday was proof that we should no longer just be giving the big 3 (well just Djokovic and Nadal to a lesser extent now) slams before they have won them. A tear is unlikely now in my opinion as he gets older. Maybe a couple more in the next few years before he is completely done.

I totally agree with that. Let's just see how many more they win. I would not count any before they happen. Certainly in the case of Rafa I am really not sure he'll be able to do it again. Roger ever doing it again is extremely unlikely. I'd be shocked if Djokovic doesn't win at least one more, but not really that shocked.

The only "tears" will be this...again....

And let's just quickly say a prayer for all the racquets of 2022, who never got to live their full lives because of it.

The AO will set the tone for the rest of 2022. If Djokovic wins it, he'll take the wind out of the sails of the Nexgen. If he loses, then I think 2022 will be a true changing of the guard. Because the Nexgen will finally view themselves as equals if not superior to the aging Djokovic (and Nadal if he is healthy; Fed will likely not be a factor unless there is a miracle). I view 2022 as the year Djokovic needs to break the Slam record. He's got a better than 50% chance to do so I think, but that probability drops with each Slam he does not win. He will be the favorite at the AO, co-favorite at the FO and favorite at Wimby, so if will be quite surprising if he doesn't win one of those three.

This isn't a bad take, I said in another thread that we could be right back in the same place a year from now.

Father Time will catch Djok eventually but it doesn't really feel like we're there yet. Once he starts going down to NextGens in the QF and SF, then we'll know.
