Is Djokovic the Pearl Jam of tennis?

I never understand how a Nadal fan can call Djokovic boring. I get it if a Federer fan says it since he's known as the artist but not a Nadal fan. Djokovic has more surface range and dominated all surfaces at some point in his career. As a tennis fan, I find that more exciting than watching a player win 65-70% of their big titles/Slams at 4 or 5 venues.

Its the approach to the game. Over the years Djokovic has become impeccable at playing the percentages but as a result he sacrificed the explosiveness that made him interesting to me when he was younger.

Nadal is by any measure a more defensive player but is a more explosive athlete too, though admittedly not nearly as exciting to watch as in his younger years either

To each their own I guess but I find Djokovic to be more multi dimensional in his approach to the game and in his strokes which is probably why he has dominated every part of the season at some point in his career.

He is without question more multidimensional but he became so good at playing the percentages in all of those dimensions that it became extremely boring. Djokovic matches are best when someone forces him out of his comfort zones, which is why his matches vs Fed and Stan are a lot of fun

Most of the greatest matches of the last 15 years include Djokovic; the video that Wimbledon compiled of the last decade of the best points included half of Djokovic in it. I will say his rivalry with Murray I found somewhat boring. I don't know why but a lot of the matches lacked something. As far as Djokovic as a player, he's far from boring if you appreciate tennis at the highest level.

We can break the season down into chunks: Oceania (AO), Spring NA hardcourt season (Miami/IW), clay season (MC, Madrid, Rome, RG), grass season (Wimbledon), summer NA hardcourt season (Canada, Cincy, USO), fall season (Shanghai, Paris, ATP Finals). What do they all have in common? Djokovic dominated them all at least once. I want to see this on display as a tennis fan. Complete mastery. Not groundhog day but like I said, to each their own.

That's what Rafa himself has said:

1) “I can listen opera, I can listen classic music, pop, rock. It is true that electronic music is not my one that is the only music I can’t. But the rest of the things depends on the moment, depends of the mood you are in.”

2) Rafa was interviewed by ELLE (a lifestyle magazine) in 2013 and was asked a question about watching musicals. He answered: "Every year, I go to Broadway to see a musical — I like the music. I saw Mamma Mia; I saw Les Misérables; I saw Phantom of the Opera like six, seven times."

3) Spanish singer (& songwriter) Julio Iglesias (Enrique's father), the best-selling Spanish-speaking artist in history, became Rafa's favourite singer, when Rafa was a teenager and they have had a good relationship since then. Rafa has attended his concerts in Spain and abroad.
Julio Iglesias praises Rafa at his concert in Barcelona in 2013:

Rafa is a grandson of a musician, that’s where he inherited his love of music from.
...

I only mentioned the rock bands since the thread was comparing that genre of music with Tennis players. The quote was from P.236-237 of the Dominic Bliss book which Nadal told Bliss what he listens to when he works out. There was also the mention of classical, opera, pop music, and everything except electronic music." The latter a direct quote from P.41. I wonder does he prefer Opera Buffa, Opera Seria, or Drama Giocosa? He also told the author he like to read Isabelle Allende and Dan Brown.

I'll take Rocío Jurado over Iglesias.

You’ve mentioned domination a lot, but I don’t see what results have to do with entertainment quality. One of my favorite matches involving a big 4 member was Murray - Llodra at I believe US08, Llodra played some super entertaining tennis in that one and has obviously not achieved much in singles

Good player, but boring, nothing too interesting.

Federer is Nirvana— not the best, but transcendent, revolutionary.

Nadal is Alice In Chains — most superior riffs/musicianship, which is almost reminiscent of Nadals raw clay court ability. Falls behind Nirvana in popularity.
federer is the beatles, nadal rolling stones and djokovic is bad bunny, period

Pearl Jam became pretty mundane over time and I’m not the biggest fan but Ten is best of the big mainstream grunge albums. Personally I don’t think it’s that close.

In comparison to Nirvana, Nevermind was childish, In Utero less immediate, Bleach not fully formed.

AIC was more rooted in more traditional rock and mainstream metal tropes, plus Dirt is just way too depressing.

For Soundgarden, Badmotorfinger was cool but a little samey in comparison and Superunknown wasn’t as vital and could get a little repetitive at times

I guess Siamese dream had its own shoegazy vibe if that was your thing though obviously most wouldn’t put it in the same tier

To bring things back in I would still say Djokovic = Pearl Jam though. Explodes on the scene with exciting aggressive baselining (2007/08/11 Djokovic = Ten) before become a boring defensive player (later era Pearl Jam)

Ten is a pop/rock album. Sorry to tell you, mate.

Nirvana was short-lived and self-destructive. It killed both its own style and its genre. I always suspected Kurt actually hated his own band. The music I like though, it synthetized so many different things. You get Black Sabbath, you get Beat Happening. At the end of the day, its legacy is bigger than the band ever was and the end cast a shadow over it all. Nirvana was like the perfect opposite of Roger.

Pearl Jam was for the most part a generic wimp rock. It's the type of band tiny bald managers of small hotels are passionate about.

Alice in Chains started out as a hair metal band and jumped on the grunge wagon only after their contemporaries and managers advised them to. Some of their harmonies are nice, but at the end of the day, it is just a bunch of musical cliches.

It's more like...

Roger = The Beatles -- started out rough, then cleaned up, ended up aesthetically superior, but not overly interesting, clean throughout, marketed like crazy, overexposed and overrated and overpraised.
Rafa = Rolling Stones -- much nastier, much sweatier, a good antidote to Roger, but at the end of the day, just a bunch of followers. He even risks hanging on too long.
Novak = The Kinks -- they were banned from the US! They were like a cross between the Stones and the Beatles. They had more to say than both of those bands combined. They cared about the little people and they wrote music about their lives. At the end of the day, they're ultimately underrated despite being a bit boring.

I just find Djokovic more entertaining but that doesn't mean Nadal is boring. I guess we all have our opinions on what's entertaining what isn't. I found Srichaphan and Santoro entertaining but neither achieved a whole lot as well.

Can you make this more relatable to a millennial like me that grew up with none of those bands? What video game soundtrack best represents each member of the big 3???

Djokovic = Super Mario Bros
Nadal = Legend of Zelda
Federer = Pokemon
Murray = Mega Man Legacy

Only fake tennis fans and non-players think Djokovic's tennis is boring. If you had a real appreciation for the sport you'd realize how special a talent he is. Maybe if you played tennis you'd realize that.
Lmao. I’m a tennis 4.5 so I’m decent.
Relative to those top guys, he absolutely is boring.

I dislike hockey teams that play a defensive, trapping style, even though some of them have been historically dominant. Similarly, you can appreciate the skill of a tennis player but still find them boring stylistically

Zverev is Limp Bizkit

Not a chance. Limp Bizkit were huge.

He's nowhere near their stardom.

The big nu metal bands are KoRn, Bizkit, Deftones, Linkin Park, SOAD, Slipknot. With Slipknot being the most prevalent. They still sell out every gig and are headliners of the biggest festivals.

Grunge sucks
That sounds like something Kurt Cobain would say.
The hardcore Grunge people said that Nirvana sold out in October 1990 when they changed their record label from Sub Pop to David Geffen Company Records. Nirvana's first album Bleach in 1989 (which got a re-release in 1992) is pure Grunge, with the slower, more chilled out pace mixed with the dirty, distorted sounds.

Federer - Metallica
Djokovic - Iron Maiden
Nadal - Gipsy Kings

Which version of Maiden the Di'anno, Dickinson, or Blaze era? Which version of Metallica the Burton, Newsted, or Trujillo era? I think Nadal is closer to Rush since when
I see them live they play for 3-hours, and Nadal likes BO5. Moreover, he says he likes clay since he likes to problem solve and Neil Peart says drumming for Rush is
like running a marathon while trying to solve an equation. The last time I saw IM and Met they both had about 2 hour sets despite being younger than Rush.

All of them. 2007-2008 Djoko is Dianno era, good but raw, 2011-2016 is Dickinson era nuff said, 2016-2018 is Blaze meh era, and post 2018 is the return of Dickinson era.

Same for Fedr. Shortish domination period, some ups and mostly downs after that. Fan favorite. Fedfans like to say Federer is tennis, and i've met lots of people and kids who falsely believe "metallica" is the genre.
