Is Federer a dead man walking when he faces Nadal at a slam?

Nadal has won their last 5 meetings at slams (2 on hardcourt, 2 on clay, 1 on grass). The most recent was 2012 Australian Open. Federer was on a 26 match winning streak heading into that semi-final, and even won the first set, but Nadal took him out in 4 sets, despite Nadal claiming before the AO that he had not adapted to his heavier racquet and would need all of February to practice with it before he was ready. Federer still couldn't beat him. So does Federer even have a chance?

I don't think so. Maybe in when Nadal was playing injured there was a chance. But this year Nadal and Uncle Toni both said "there will be no bandaid solutions from now on" and that "Rafa will only play when he is 100% from now on".

So whenever Federer faces Nadal, Nadal will be 100% fit. Nadal refuses to play from now on unless he's 100%. If this were 2009, Nadal would have played the US Open. But now, only 100%.

In fact, Nadal's knee troubles in 2012 began at Indian Wells (and he played Federer there), and the following week he withdrew from Miami semis and said "I should not have played Miami". We won't see Nadal play injured again.

No. Fed has always had the ability to beat Nadal. His problem is all mental, but I have a feeling that the next time they meet in a slam Fed will beat him. Especially since Nadal has been out so long.

Nadal is much better than Federer, that's why he always beats him.

Exactly.

Nadal is smarter than Federer.
Nadal is more athletic than Federer.

Federer can't overcome this.

Whereas Djokovic is not smarter than Federer, and only has an athletic edge.

Fereder should retire and fade away into oblivion. No need to hang around the circuit when the writing is on the wall. He could get a coaching job at a home in Florida to support his expensive substance habits.

Or he could just hang around and hope Nadal doesn't appear at the semi/final stage of each slam, ala 2009 and 2012. That tactic got Federer the Career Grand Slam and allowed him to break his 2 year slam drought.

Everytime Nadal plays Federer, the commentators criticize Federer's tactics. They say "Why doesn't he move forward" or "Why doesn't he make the backhand into the forehand more"? Notice that Federer did this in the 1st set of the 2011 RG final and the 2012 AO semi-final, but somehow had a brain fade and forgot the tactic after that. Whereas Nadal has a reputation for being an extremely good tactical player. Remember when he lost to Simon in 2008 and then relied on the backhand slice more than the 2-hander when they met in 2009 and beat Simon in straight sets? And you see what he did to Djokovic in 2012.

Replace 'smarter than' with 'has a better match up against'.

Like I said, Federer used his brain for a change in the 1st set of 2011 RG and 2012 AO. Rarely does Federer use his brain. Federer is more the "ooo look at me i'm beautiful" type. The Paris Hilton of Tennis as it were.

I guess Ferede is sticking around in desperate hope that Nadal will get injured ahead of the next Olympics. Pretty desperate and pathetic...

Plus he can probably forecast that Djokovic's body won't hold together. And the weak "Raonic era" is on the way.

Fed is ranked higher
Fed has won the more recent slam
Fed is actually playing on the tour while Rafa has been on a wheel chair

At the FO, no I don't think so but at W or a HC slam, Federer may beat Nadal again. What other goals does Federer have left at this point in his career but some payback for Nadal in non-clay slams? It will be much harder now because of the age difference and because of the mental component but with Federer, you can never write him off completely.

Why are you even talking to that troll? All he or she does is hate on Federer 24/7 and it goes way beyond what is normal. This person probably can barely scrape two cents together as those are the people who seem to hate Federer, people who are not successful themselves.

Or people who aren't satisfied with his style of play. Or they're just Nadal fans.

Nadal actually looks like a hard worker and that appeals to a wide variety of people. Federer just looks like a gifted guy who didn't have to work as hard to achieve his goals.

No, when people have that much hatred for Federer as that troll does, it says more about them than it does about anything. Many people hate Federer because of what his image represents. They can't handle the snob factor and the success factor combined, it brings out their own insecurities with their own miserable and small lives. That is my opinion at least.

Fed knows he can't beat Nadal on the big stage since Nadal primed. So his only hope has been to avoid him at all costs at the slams since 2007

Nope. It is a whole different thing. Many working class or average people without their own ambitions can handle Nadal's success because Nadal represents that humble hard-working guy or that is the image he projects (even though it is mostly false because Nadal comes from a wealthier family than Federer does.) These same people have a problem with all of the success Federer has had because he also represents the luxury class of society with his image and endorsements. People can't handle that imo.

That makes no sense. If Federer is able to beat Nadal in a slam now at age 31 plus, it will only be to Federer's advantage since there is a 5 year age difference. It will silence any doubters out there or it should, not that Federer needs to prove anything at this stage but a champion always wants to prove something.

Fed hasn't been "able to" since he was 26.. If he hasn't been able to since then.. No way he will now

Maybe. But at the USO or Wimbledon I would never say never when it comes to Federer. You simply can't ever rule a great champion out.

Fed has nothing to prove to anyone. He's sitting on a billion dollars net worth, the Fed brand is one of the richest in sports and he's universally revered by everyone.

YES, can we close the thread now?
How can you say "yes" (implying you're 100 percent certain that Federer will always lose to Nadal) when the forementioned hasn't come to the surface yet?

That's true, I doubt Federer cares that he hasn't been able to beat Nadal at a slam since 2007 or that he's only won 2 of their 10 slam meetings. I doubt Federer will care if it balloons out to 2-10 or 2-12. Because Federer only cares about net worth. That's all anyone will remember in the end, right? Well said.

The funny thing is that you troll this forum hard with your stupid Nadal fanboyism but you don't even know Nadal at all. If he met you he'd probably wouldn't even give you a second glance. You're nothing to him. Why are you worshipping someone who doesn't give a damn about you? Don't you have something better to do than troll?

Well, net worth and slams. I mean, I'm sure Fed would love to have the H2H in his favour, but I'm damn near positive if he were to be offered the chance to reverse the H2H with Rafa at the cost of having their Slam counts flipped as well, he'd say no way.

Fed can't have everything. If a losing record to Nadal is the price he has to be for 17 majors and all his other accolades, than so be it. GOAT? By definition, that can't be decided. Greatest of his generation? Hell, you've seen the stats.

Because of Nadal, Federer fails in the comparison with Sampras/Laver. You can't be at the Sampras/Laver level if you are being dominated by another player from 2005-2012.

Look what Nadal's long layoff has done to you, youre losing your freaking mind, hahaha.

On second thought, if I had to choose between:
1) Nadal playing well and *********s staying shut
and
2) Nadal not playing at all/playing poorly and the *********s being in full force proving how he's the man

I choose the latter. All in all, the moon doesn't care for barking dogs.

Nadal should have won in 2007 if not for choking. Their H2H in slams would be 9-1 had Nadal won that match as well.

Hahaha the world will end when someone uses the "Nadal choked against Federer" excuse. Oops....

If Federer'd didn't choke in the 2008 Wimbledon final (a point away from serving for the match), 2009 Australian Open final (led in each of the first 4 sets), 2007 FO final (gazillion of break points wasted), 2011 FO Fed (completely gone mentally after squandering a set point) would actually lead Nadal in major h2h. See how easy that was?

Lawl, Nadal would've won the 2007 WImbledon final if not for choking, haha. High five, mate, high five.

Federer in most cases cannot beat Nadal in important matches, we all know it, so this is unnecessary thread.

But those 2 wackos have to rub it in, so it is not unnecessary. It's fun seeing the 2 crazy fans of Rafa pitted against the 2 dingbats (tennis_pro and monfed)of the Fed brigade............

I thought Federer's comment that Nadal always seems to play better against him than other players after the SF loss at the AO was interesting. Maybe he's onto something there. Perhaps Federer's been a bit unlucky to draw Nadal completely on his game so consistently.

Sure, some of that is just Nadal gearing up more for a guy like Federer, but I could also believe that Federer's been a bit unfortunate in that regard as well.
