Before reading please dont think I am a lune..

I happened to make a country based fans list for both Federer and nadal like this:

1) I would go into my Facebook profile
2) I open Federer's official page and see how of many of my friends like that page
3) I would open nadal's page and see how many like that

So I am from India and 102 out of my 1000 friends like federer and only 48 out of my 1000 friends liked nadal...

I logged into the account of my brazilian friend.. and did the same.. and it was the exact opposite.. the number of his friends liking nadal was double that of federer..

However recently the numbers have been moving a lot up in favor of Federer.. thnaks to his South American tour.. He is adding more and more fans there.. I also see more and more comments in Spanish on his pics and his updates..

He has made a point to be in the news in Brazil and Argentina every single day... in the 2 most populous countries in South America.. ;-)

What do you guys think>??

I think that for people who know little about tennis it makes perfect sense to adopt Federer as your image of what tennis is and should be. For people who know a lot about tennis it's exactly the same.

He would be taking them away if you were only allowed to like one of them, but this is not a zero sum thing.

I know.. but lets say u r a famous company and you want to market your product in South america.. and since federer is becoming so popular even the one continent that eluded him.. you would obviously pick Federer as your brand ambassador... isnt it??

I think federer is seeing twilight in his career.. which is why he is opening tabs for maximum business in the coming years and then retiring in a few.. I bet he started thinking retirement already and all of these are steps planned towards it..

It is no secret that Roger is the most popular player by a huge margin. Just taking in million additional Brazilian fans doesn't change that

He may be popular, but so far, the numbers aren't great for this exo tour. They were giving away tickets to it because they weren't selling, and there were plenty of empty seats as well.

And this thread is dumb, and is yet another "my dad can beat up your dad" thread.

He's one of the best players of all time playing in the most interconnected periods of all time. Logically he would naturally become extremely popular, and coupled with the fact that he's NOT controversial but a great ambassador for the sport, his popularity jumped.

Contrast this to Rafa, who doesn't always finish a season. Less exposure, his english skills aren't as great as Federer's so he doesn't appeal to Americans as much as Spanish speaking nations, second best in his era, etc. etc.

They're both extremely popular people, but the popularity follows their respective places in this generation: 1 and 2.

Nadal has more on-court charisma than Federer with his over the top fist-pumping and mannerisms. Away from it, Nadal is a kid being looked after by his Uncle and his interviews are dull and boring.
Also, people only like winners hence they jump on the bandwagon of the player on top.
