He's probably mentally stronger than 95% of us in terms of controlling his nerves. However in compared with everyone in top 6 he's mentally weak.

We're not saying he's worthless... we're just disappointed that he isn't realising his potential.. he was trouncing both djokovic and murray in those first sets, yet he choked his lead away... and then mentally checked out of the match... that's very frustrating to watch and must be frustrating for him. this is called empathy*.

I love watching the guy play. We need more players like him, guys who didn't come off of some assembly line...

* em·pa·thy /ˈempəTHē/ Noun. The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

He has a really nice game. Great forehand. Good serve. And good looking backhand. His netgame doesn't seem to bad either.

But IMO, he lacks the most important couple of things. Firstly, his foowork looks quite messy, and he does not seem at all to be moving as efficiently elegant as Fed. He is explosive and all, but he just doesn't seem to have that natural gift of Fed's.

And secondly, he's sadly proven time after time that he lacks the believing mentality of a true champion. Hope I'm wrong, but I think that's just something that one cannot learn. You're either born with it, or you'll never have it.

TW verdict: Dimitrov is worthless..

Reality..: he is one of the 40 best tennis players in the world today.

He's a talented young player that has to overcome some mental issues at the moment but he's not even in the vicinity of being the next Fed, young Fed floated on court, Dimitrov almost looks clumsy in comparison when you force him to hit on the run (he's too far behind Fed in anticipation and footwork).

Actually, this is not completely accurate.

Dimitrov has been getting ridiculous amounts of praise on this forum for years now. Based on his achievements, he does not deserve any of that praise, but since he has "elegant strokes" he is immediately chalked up as a future grand slam champion by many here.

Dimitrov is a talented player and I think he'll win majors, I think he has the best overall game of players 22 and under but he is definitely no Federer. His footwork could improve a lot but he has a solid FH, BH, and serve now and seems to be a very natural athlete (reminiscent of Djokovic with his flexibility and sliding).

I don't think I've ever seen a pro player mimic another pro's game as closely has he does. I would have thought getting to the pro level you would've developed your own style.
I guess you've never seen Rajeev Ram play then?

I think you will find the praise originated from outside these forums (as much of real life things do) based on real achievements as a junior. There are however, many people who tuned in late to the Baby Fed hype and never made the association with his junior successes and thought "what's all the fuss about?"

I agree with an earlier poster about the frustration, I can certainly relate to that when watching Grigor (especially when I thought he's finally learning to manage risk better in tight situations).

What? I believe anyone can develop the believing mentality. Your environment shapes who you become but if you change your environment, you change yourself. Wasn't Djokovic being called out for being a quitter and mentally checking out often in the mid-late 00's? In fact, it got so bad that Roddick (a 1-time Grand Slam champion) called him out on it. Now he's a 6-time Grand Slam champion.

Yes. He will reach his prime around 30 and his absolute peak at 35. The only player to steal a set from Federer in the Djokovic Open.Great future ahead.

Yes, absolutely. Eventually the calender year grand slams will flow from that Wilson weapon of his, just wait and see.

It is hard to come to the tour with a game similar (not better) to Federer. The whole tour prepares their game to beat Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray. It is nice to play like your idols, but you have to develop your own unique style.

Dimitrov is actually better than the mythical peak Federer ever was. He's brought the federian ballerina playing style to the next level. But it's just not effective anymore, as evolution has caught up with it.

Yeah that is why the 33/34 year old Federer has been number 2 or 3 the last couple of years...because his game is ineffective

The mythical peak that won 11 Slams in 4 years? I think it happened, so it's not a myth.

He is one of the best looking guys on tour. He seems like one of the nicest and friendliest, and he is a funny dude. He seems one of the most popular with the ladies, even getting hotties like Pova and Bouchard chasing after him, and the great Serena for awhile. So he atleast going for him, but not enough going for him on the court to net any slams. Baby Federer? More like baby Gasquet, the way things are looking (and the way his game frankly looks).

What could’ve been. :(

He was never going to reach Federer level of greatness but I am disappointed that he is yet to win a major.

Such a painful thread to open.

I miss Breakpoint. I heard a rumor that he passed away. Great poster.

I also miss the days when some of us had hope in Dimitrov. Those days are over, I fear, even if we got excited last fall for a bit!

RIP BP. RIP GD.
