Is it fair to say that Roger Federer remains the Gold standard for Longevity at the highest level in Tennis ?

That’s not related to longevity, just circumstances.
Federers 2014-2016 was as unlucky as it can possibly get. He was winning 60% of serve games, which is ATG level, but didnt get paid off with a single slam. Its probably the only three year period in tennis history which wouldnt leave him with at least a slam, because he was facing younger absolute peak Djokovic.

Comparing titles and not level of competition those years doesnt make sense. Facing peak Djokovic wasnt the same as facing Berretini, Medvedev and Tsitsipas.

I think his peak/prime years- that consistency in those mid-20s, exactly when he should have been consistently winning, is a big deal.

Not to mention just his Rogerness.

(I know Novak fans will love his "Rogerness" being a metric.)

I do think the opinion of players who PLAYED the greats at their best is really relevant. Nadal has all but admitted Federer was the greatest he played, albeit as politely as possible. I am sure around 2010 time there was a video doing the rounds where players in the top 20 were asked who the greatest player was that they had faced at the time was and Nadal had a few votes, but Federer got the most, including from Djokovic.
What hurt Federer was not his game or results, it was simply the fact his best was before the App Generation (even facebook hadnt been invented in his absolute peak years 2004-2006) and due to how long he went on for, a bit like his mate Tendulkar, as time went on he got remembered by at least two generations of fans for being quite vulnerable in big moments, which was true post 2010 for Federer and Tendulkar post 2000. I am thankful i can remember these guys at their swashbuckling best. Nadal and Federer definitely are the two best i have seen in the 21st Century. I do think Sampras at his very best rivalled them, and for me his very best was 1994. Djokovic on Australasia hard courts absolutely up there as well.

Djokovic's longevity was better. Federer won 0 Slams between 31-35 and didn't get back to #1 during that time except for fall 2012. He was 35.5 when he won another Slam and right after that became #1 again. Djokovic won many Slams between 31-35, and probably spent close to 200 weeks at #1 and had 3 YE #1's.
Djokovic was more successful, obviously, but longevity is up for debate. The massive contrast in their success is because Federer spent his 31-35 years in the toughest period in tennis in the past 30 years while Djokovic the exact opposite. Really, their age 38 years support that the difference in their levels is not large at all. Federer 2019 > Djokovic 2025 so far, but this could still change.

100%

The App generation. Yup. Anyone playing before this dopamine culture emerged is gonna have that advantage.

Sure, but Djokodal at 32 and 33 still arguably played at higher levels than Sinneraz have so far
Yeah don’t get me wrong. I only think 38 year old Djoko beating 30+ Sinneraz in succession is not completely out of this world (we don’t know how they will be at that age). I don’t think though beating them would match Fed’s achievement, neither now and even less a hypothetical 32/33 old versions of them.

Murray beat Fed at slams first time in 2013 when Fed had a very bad year. Djokovic beat Fed already in 2008. Nadal on the other hand lost to Murray already in 2008 and again in 2010 both before he lost first to Djokovic in 2011. Whoever rigged those draws must have been pretty stupid. No way Federer needs protection from Murray.

True.
Saying that Federer needed protection is like saying a Lion needs protection form the Leopard, makes no sense at all.

Djokovic at this rate will have negative h2hs against both Sinner and Alcaraz at the slams, that is kinda the point
fed had ALWAYS negative h2h vs rafa (7-13 in his own era), had negative h2h vs muzza (4-6 in his own era) up to cinci14 (when he wos 33) and vs nole since AO16! he actually IMPROVED massively his h2h vs rafa from 2015 (after he was 34) and muzza from 2009 (he was 28). in both cases after his era (peak, prime what even you want) and when he already, according to his fans, got old! he got worse ONLY vs nole. and nole who got much better vs all AND he, muzza and rafa are PEERS!!! nole had positive h2h in BOTH his eras vs ALL players that he played more than few times! if nole get negative h2h vs sinner and raz it will happen after he got 38 at least and vs players that are 15-16 years younger than him. and one of them was failed twice to doping and was very favorable treated by establishment just for play at all!

True.
Saying that Federer needed protection is like saying a Lion needs protection form the Leopard, makes no sense at all.
but both he and rafa had got it (or, at least, very favorable treatment that was even against the rules if you like it more) and that is the fact! it could just help them to improve their slam stats not do it worse to them!

Favourable treatment was more to favor Rafa, not Federer.

no, both of them. as said before, muzza got to opposite side than fed each time even if he was not top4 seed. why should muzza (big4 member), as clearly best player outside of big3, be better for rafa outside of clay than any other player who was 5-8 or 9-16 seed?

Muzza was not clearly best player outside big 3 until 2010, before that Roddick, Del Potro, Davydenko were all better than Murray. Robin Soderling too was there who was rising.

04-09 weaker? Come on man LOL. Safin, older Agassi, Roddick, Hewitt, Del Potro Nadal, nalbandian, etc are better than the field by 18-23 and by. LARGE margin. It’s better by a large margin than today’s field too. Only sinner is the real deal at the moment. Carlos has his moments but far too inconsistent
WRONG.
While I definitely agree that 04-09 is significantly stronger than 18-23, it is NOT stronger than 24-25. Have you actually been following tennis lately?

nole is winning = very very weak era!
nole is not winning = very strong era!

That's not what your fellow Federer fans were saying for the last 10 years. They said 2014-2016 was ultra weak. You guys are also trying to pick one age, 38, and come to the conclusion that this means Federer was either better or their levels weren't all that different throughout their 30s. The difference is, Djokovic has smashed all the records where no one can reach them for at least decades and has completed the game, and has nothing left to prove. He has no one on his heels pushing him or threatening his records, which is totally different to Federer at the same age. Reality is, Djokovic was just consistently a better player day in and day out at 31-35 and if anybody is truly being objective they can see that.

This is called trying to have your cake and eat it too. Before, it was Djokodal were so declined and the only reason they were winning at 32 and 33 was because of weak competition and Federer being old. Now, it's that at that age they were better than 21/22 and 23/24 year old Alcaraz and Sinner, guys with much fresher legs? I thought they were winning because there were no young ATGs but now they were better at 32/33 than the young ATGs? You guys are all over the place. One thing for sure, an age difference of 22 and 24 compared to 38 is massive. It's not between 38 compared to 32 and 33.

You can keep repeating that if it makes you feel better. Lol. The game wasn't strong at all from 1998-2003 either. Agassi won two pretty weak AO titles during that time but no one really cares because we know he was the best there regardless.
I will speak what I truly believe. LOL

STRAWMAN
It's not that Agassi vultured 12 slams like Djokovic did in the CIE. He was sandwiched between the two great Sampras and Federer. Big difference !

That's why he's my GOAT.

Federer's longevity is without the doubt was more impressive than Djokovic and it's one of the reason why he's better and greater than Djokovic.

At their respective peak/prime, Federer was on another level. Hence why he's my GOAT

The most dominant tennis player in his respective era is Roger Federer.
From 2004 AO - 2010 AO, prime/peak Federer amazes us by winning a staggering 15 out of 25 slams !

Of his 25 total slam appearances, he:
reaches 10 consecutive slam finals
reaches 4 finals in a season 3 times
won 3 out of 4 slams in a season 3 times
reaches 18 out of 19 slam finals
reaches 24 out of 25 slam semifinals
owns 5 slam titles at 3 different venue

He won 51 single titles

He accumulated 266 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings including an astonishing 237 consecutive weeks.
5 out of 6 years he ended the YE #1.

The correct but boring answer is there is no meaningful difference in the longevity of any of the big 3.
yes! it is just that nole was better and more versatile player than fed and rafa old or young! rafa was best of 3 as very young ages.

so fed won 60% of slams in that period!

from W18 to USO23 nole won 12 out of 19 slams he was allowed to play, that is 63,2%! W20 was canceled, he was politically deported from AO22 and banned from USO22. he was a big favorit at all 3 of them. and he was DQ from USO20 that i count with and he would be big favorit even there if not for DQ. and more so, despite all that nole won 2 CGS in that period while fed won only 1 (but never won vs rafa)!

i don't overeating muzza. just write the facts! yes denko had 6-1 vs rafa on HC winning last 6 HC matches. and that is why he was always on opposite part of the HC slams! but muzza had positive h2h vs roger and that why he was always on the opposite side of the draw up to 2011. also the fact.

Well what you believe is mostly nonsense, like Federer being greater than Djokovic. Djokovic was the best player in the world for 12 years and no one else in the modern era can say that. That's a long period of "vulturing". Of course when you dominate that long you will end up smashing all the records, but keep believing it's because of "vulturing" as if he didn't win virtually all the head to head records against his rivals.

Let’s stop minimizing the age differences between Fed and Djokodal. Age became an issue for you guys only after Djokovic lost

yes, a beautiful GOAT story.

just in GOAT year of 2023:
winning vs 2 15-16 years younger ATGs.
vs raz at cinci final and RG SF
vs sinner in W
and vs both b2b in WTF SF and F
+ all other players ofcourse

I thought they were winning because there were no young ATGs though? Isn't that what you and other Federer fans said? Aren't Alcaraz and Sinner young ATGs in the making?

How about let's stop overexaggerating it. Djokovic dominated until he was 36 and a half and did it over these young ATGs with an age difference of more than twice the difference of Federer compared to Djokodal. 5 and 6 years is nothing compared to 14 and 16 years.

That’s also true, but Sinner and Raz simply still have some improving to do, especially Raz. He lost to an injured old Djokovic in BO5 just recently

He didn’t do it over these young ATGs half his age, let’s not re-write history.

I know 5 and 6 years are nothing when your best opponent is Thiem.

Nothing you or anyone else writes on this matter will change my mind on this one in the slightest.

The goalposts just never stop moving. You will destroy your own argument to somehow try to prove Federer had it tougher.

He didn't beat Alcaraz at RG, Cincy and ATP Finals or beat Sinner at Wimbledon and ATP Finals that year?

2017-2020 Thiem was a great player and beat both Djokovic and Nadal in big matches, but Djokovic's best opponent in those years was still Nadal.

What other people say about 2014-2016 has nothing to do with me, so I don’t know what’s the point of mentioning this. Federer turned 30 in 2011 during the peak of the big 4 years, so there’s much more than to his 30’s competition than 2014-2016. Do you acknowledge that Federer’s 30’s competition was the most difficult in the past 30 years or not? Difficulty of competition is also relative. 2014-2016 is harder for Federer than for Djokovic because he has to go through peak Djokovic.

I didn’t come to any conclusion at all. Read my post again - I said their age 38 years support that the difference in level wasn’t that big, and I don’t see why this is such a controversial opinion. We need to separate level of play from achievements as best as we can precisely because the competition was so different. Federer didn’t have the luxury of facing players the caliber of Ruud, Anderson, Kyrgios and Berrettini in slam finals in his 30’s. Federer’s weakest final opponent from 2011 onwards was Cilic, a league above all those guys. You really think Federer wouldn’t have beaten those guys? I didn’t argue against Djokovic being better day in day out, and I’ve said that multiple times.

Yeah, 5 consecutive at both Wimbledon and USO is really impressive, one of the historically unique feats in tennis. It's not as rock solid as Rafa's FO record but I have to say, I don't expect to see anyone repeat 5x in a row at USO and Wimbledon in my lifetime either.

Fed will always have a case for GOAT, just because of peak play and dominance, he had probably the best 4 year run ever. He did have some bouts of really impressive in his old (tennis) age as well but was marred by inconsistency, some if caused by injuries in 2013 and 2016. You can see that he's still relevant just by the fact that even in this forum, people still talk about Fed all the time (whether fans or detractors) despite him being retired for 3 years now.

Nadal and Novak have their claims too of course, with Novak's IMO still being the strongest despite everything. Nole slam, won literally every big tourney in tennis there is, Slam and weeks and YE#1 records. Yeah he had a few weaker gens which made it easier for him to be so dominant at 30+ but still, that can't take all the shine of his ridiculously complete career, it's damn near perfect CV.

Rafa never won more than 5 RGs in a row.

What is the record for consecutive Slam title defense streaks?

Doesn matter if a Leopard is on the same side of the draw of a lion or the opposite draw when the real target is the Tiger in the final, isn't it ?

Murray had a history of being impotent vs Federer in BO5, so he being on any side of the draw did not matter, you need to understand this. Sir Murray did not have any weapons to trouble Federer, to trouble peak Federer you need a strong weapon like a Nadal forehand or Del Potro Forehand or all round big Game of Marat Safin. Sir Murray did not have any weapon to trouble Federer, absolutely nothing at all.

but they fixed draw to fed to avoid him anyway. that he won 2 finals vs young muzza who had positive h2h vs fed does not mean that he would win if they met earlier when the pressure is less. and muzza did win 2 very important best of 5 matches vs fed. olympic final on feds best court in easy 3 sets and AO13 SF in 5 sets. fed is 5-2 vs muzza in best of 5 matches (71%). so muzza was not so impotent. if muzza (who is peer with nole and rafa) was impotent in best of 5 vs fed the lion so was lion impotent vs rafa and nole (only 34%). if we take away masters and DC matches so was he 4-11 (27%) vs rafa and 6-11 (35%) vs nole. therein finals he was 3-7 (30%) vs rafa and 1-4 vs nole (20%), while he was 3-1 vs muzza (75%).

I guess if Djokovic did it, you would have said he inflated his numbers to get there, but since your idol did it, lets marvel at his longevity. :alien:

Well done Nadal!
3 slams seasons in your mid thirties is outrageous, egregious, preposterous.

Hey, not my fault Murray squeaked one slam win in Fed's worst season, no amount of mental gymnastics will make 2013 Fed a strong opponent, it is what it is.

He was also 1-9 in sets against Rafa at Wimbledon, which is really bad for a guy with two Wimbledons and 5 Queens.

Murray could have played better in big matches but majority of the time he was passive and let them dictate play, he also never improved his 2nd serve, it remained a major liability throughout his whole career.

The lack of an off season at the end of 2012 really hurt his form coming into 2013 thanks to the south America tour lol.

Fed the lion was not a peer to Rafa or Novak, he was always at a disadvantage in terms of Testosterone levels when battling them as by the time they entered their early 20s he was already 26 and from then on the journey was slowly downwards in an athletic way. He had a weakness vs Nadal but none vs Novak, I tell you that Novak is lucky that Federer is not born in the same year as him. Federer would have erased Nole as a player if that had happened. Only Nadal had what it took to trouble Federer, the true Kryptonite in Superman's life was Nadal to Federer, otherwise peak Federer was invincible.

fed is the IF and the hypothetical GOAT by very big margin. pity that he was so weak IRL!

You havent seen tennis before 2011 and thats why you feel Fed was weak IRL.

Federer was more dominant than anyone ever in Tennis in his peak years, he was like laureus sportsman of the year for like 4 straight years, that much dominant he was. He was the most dominant SPORTSMAN for 4 years (05-08), not just a tennis player. He was that big in his peak, unreal hold over Tennis he had.
