whats the ones from previous years look like?
Sorry for the massive link!!!
Maybe maybe not but I wasn't expecting something that looked like an 8 year old went happy with a felt tip.
It may have deeper meaning but really, who wants to stand in front of a tennis poster and analyze the deeper meaning when we all want to just watch tennis. The poster should be clear if they're trying to deliver a deep message. Leave all the analyzing for the galleries.
The painting is a tribute to the great Nadal, (who can simultaneously be viewed as a strong woman due to his long hair and sleeveless shirt), who has conquered the worlds of red clay and squashed the little man in the picture, who represents Federer.
Really? The long hair is what's making him a woman? For me it's me more the period stain underneath him
and why did he outline what's supposed to be the shadow of the racket with a biro pen....oh comeon!
That blood is from the wounds that Rafa has inflicted on his opponents. That is why you see Federer in the surrendered pose.
To add insult to injury, Rafa is also shown with a racquet without strings - he can destroy his opponent with just the frame.
Interestingly, the racquet seems to have the Prince Speedports. Talk about subliminal advertising.
Now that I think of it, the message is clear. The "artist" is a Federer fan and by creating this crap and childlike poster he is saying that RG is crap and childsplay.
I'm going to google this artist.
He seems to have put more effort in his other work. What is your problem Nalini. If you didn't want to do it you didn't have to.
It is a she
That is just Monfils....she know it is his year to win it!
Thanks for the video. Yeah I got bored. I appreciate she was trying to go deep with this but it is just not necessary for a tournament poster.
It made you think, didn't it? That is the purpose of art.
This is where you're wrong, IMO. RG posters have a long tradition of being works of art, rather than more conventional posters. There is an actually exhibition at the RG museum, with posters from the previous years as well as an exhibition dedicated to this year's artist.
I like the intent, personally.
This year the FO crowd made the posters for sure, stupid people, worse taste
The French are all about the finer things in life, like art, food, and wine.
Looks like they've gone and done it again.
For the 2011 tournament, the Cameroonian artist painted a green tree with balls growing, all on a checkered background, referring to the net. A poetic way to show that tennis is a sport. As noted by the American Bill Tilden, champion of the period 1920-1930: "It's an art, like the ballet."
I prefer last years.
I could have done this one!
Bleh French Open worst slam out of the 4. Indian Wells>RG
Very abstract and very French.
WHAT are they THINKING with these horrible designs? Ugh.
I thought they were moon-rocks as well! And that is a guy on his back? The face is so poorly done, i thought it was supposed to be a child.
YES, I noticed that. I thought that was definitely Jankovic's old Prince Pro White racquet, yet the player is clearly not Jankovic.
Re: the 2010 Roland Garros poster
the player actually looks as if each foot is standing on a puffball, a common mushroom which can grow to 12" in diamater. They are excellent to eat sliced and friend in butter when they are young. ,
The player below looks scared being sprayed by the mushroom spores: ie being spored.
The butterflies are flying around laughing in amusement.
What else could it possibly mean?
They should put Roger of refined facial features on the poster, not this rustic village lad
The 2011 poster is awful indeed. Looks it was made in less than 10 mins.
Well since Soderling has made it a couple years in a row, I think they went with the Swedish Meatballs theme.
Oh what a wonderful piece of art!
Balls = fruits of playing tennis. Maybe actually just balls.
Tree: represents growth and vitality
Frayed net: represents the obstacles that a player faces. It is frayed due to long matches.
I thought this thread was some kind of trolling but geez, the RG poster is REALLY awful.
What were they thinking.
she can jump on my balls anytime ... oh wait wat
The painting is impressionist as well as abstract, with some elements of surrealism, all in a minimalist framework which transcends space and time, and speaks to our inner fears while shedding an existential light on contemporary humanity.
That's the only thing I can agree with Babette!
Hmmm....yeah...what you said.
I'm love art as much as I love tennis. I think 2K11 poster is cool. Not the coolest RG poster ever, but I can live with it.
I like the old one, except for the two asteroids in the front. The new one is like bleh.
...and S. Graf-Agassi's ugly sister? Ha Ha Ha! Rhino-I like the poster from 1994 with the hand and forearm. The only thing that would have made it better was a floating ball above the hand.
i could do a better poster that this, this isnt even artistic
that racquet has holes in it!!!!!!!
This year's poster
LOOL the French really don't like Nadal. They made him look small and scrunched up compared to the woman picture.
LOOL funny picture.
please tell me this is a joke
Actually this is more appropriate
There's a bigger photo here.
Don't eat the brown acid....
The player is on his back because he is being attacked by genetically modified butterflies.
LOL! If they keep going like this, no-one will want to win the tournament. This year's poster is beyond awful, it just defies description.
Separate names with a comma.
