Is it worthwhile to practice against a backboard?

Can you improve your strokes by hitting against a backboard? Or does it not replicate actual conditions very well?

And if it IS useful, what are some good drills? How do I make the best use of that time?

Yes you can improve your technique. But you still need real play to hone down your timing and footwork.

Definitely. It's a great way to improve your strokes to get to a certain level, but it won't take them past a certain point. That can only come from hitting a real person.

As for drills, when I do it I am pretty much just working on my consistency and keeping my eye on the ball and hitting it from different heights (like out of your strike zone). But I don't really have any specific drills to do.

And it worked wonders for my backhand because it was a good way to test different techniques and grips to see which seemed to fit me best without having to worry about hitting it back to another person.

You can practice every stroke in the game against a backboard.

First mark the wall with a piece of tape 3'6" high to simulate the highest part of the net.

Groundies: Don't hit so hard that you aren't finishing your strokes. Use the time to groove your motions under control. Move your feet. Groove one wing and then the other. Groove your optimal contact point. Keep your head down, there is a real urge to look up too early to see your next shot. Alternate by hitting mild "x-courts". You can practice all spins, loops. About the only limitation is the height of your lobs.
Returns: Stand in closer to impove reactions

Volleys: Same deal as above. Don't swing. Move your feet. Practice closing on the net (wall) Practice 1/2 volleys too. Hit a lob volley and chase it down.

Serves: Really only the motion.

Overheads: Hit a serve that short hops the wall by 4' to 8', hit hard enough and it will result in a nice high lob. Keep those short hops going and you can hit overheads to exhaustion.

That's some but as BB said it's good, but you still need live hitting. Good luck.

You can get a decent work out from it and it helps when working on a new stroke, but it can't compare to actually hitting with some one.

It can be a good guage as to how good a player is though. A better player will be able to hit the same area on a board more times between mishits.
