Is Juan Martín Del Potro the last white hope of the *******s?

Once in last years all the so-called Nadal's nemesis (Blake, Tsonga, Soderling, Djokovic) have fallen miserably, it seems that *******s are desperated creating another myth of Nadal's kryptonite in Delpo.

In which Slam do you think Nadal will destroy Delpo badly and break last *******s dream?

Del Potro isn't necessarily Nadal's kryptonite as the OP suggested, but he is a legitimate threat. Their last 3 meeting show that he's not afraid of the big players, knee injury or not. Does this mean that he will be beating Nadal every time they play? Unlikely, but people shouldn't be surprised when he does pull off an upset. He has shown the capability to overpower most players and the movement to match. I think we're in for an interesting 2011.

The fact is Federer can not protect anymore his GOAT status against prime Nadal, so his fans are looking for someone who helps Roger in that mission.

In 2007-08 they thought it would be enough with big hitters with b-status like Blake or Tsonga. James and Jo-Wilfred failed, second half of 2008 was a nightmare for *******s and they trusted then in a-status players like Djokovic and Murray, particularly in hard surfaces.

2009 begins were catastrophics, with Nadal owning Federer on hard courts too, but in FO they found Soderling, and they thought he would be the Nadal kryptonite on clay, and Novak and Murray the kriptonite on hard. In 2010 Soderling and Djokovic have been davastated by Nadal and now it seems that no one can protect Roger's GOAT status (obviously Federer himself can't either against a prime and no injured Nadal).

They trust now in Delpo, they think that Delpo can stop Nadal in AO, FO and UO. Is the last bullet on *******s cartridge, and it will fail like the others.

there is nothing special about del po,he only beat nadal 3 times in a row just like djokovic last year, because nadal was so outform and his confidence level was all life time LOW.nadal have some diffcult match ups on hard courts, but if he stays injury free,i dont see any player who has clear edge against him.to be honest if djokovic cant beat nadal del potro cant beat him for sure.djokovic is a very diffucult match for rafa and he overcome that diffculty perfectly in us open.

I think your off base. Del Potro is a more consistent winner and future multiple major winner. Soderling has occasional flashes of brilliance but he can't contend with Juan.

Nadal defeated soderling twice this year. and there was no "luck" here. Nadal would have straight setted soderling at the uso this year

I pretty much agree with your post....

But, with some Federer fans, it seems as though their antipathy for Nadal is not just because he has dominated their demi-god but also because Nadal is darker skinned, and basically brutish and non-classical in their eyes.

This is where the great-white-hope reference comes into play. Believe me, if it were Hass that came to dominate Federer and men's tennis you wouldn't see the monkey and other discriminatory descriptions about him.

But Delpo is of latin heritage himself, so he doesn't quite fit the great white hope label...

Is Juan Martín Del Potro the last white hope of the *******s?

Last time I checked Nadal is from Europe and JMDP is from South America. I must have missed something cuz I don't remember race playing a role between the two. I remember there being a racist controversy between Nadal and Gaudio but not any other South American.

So maybe it's time for you to come out now, Retra, where the did you get that racist "white hope" idea?

What creepy place have you been hanging out? Fess up!

I think you mis-understand the OP. 'Great White Hope' in this context has nothing to do with race - although it was originally race related, it has come to mean the last hope of a group of people.

Which part of Mr. Del Potro is so called 'white'? Is it 'Juan' or 'Del Potro'?...oh, it must be the 'Martin' part.

Technically Mr. Nadal is more of an Anglo than Mr. Del Potro is.

Race should not be a factor in this discussion here. Reality is, every champion has his 'Kryptonite', whether it's another player, or a factor in his or her personal life.

You are a troll, and quite terrible at that too.

The "*******s" hope is their favorite player start playing well again so we can enjoy his tennis. If he can win titles along the way, that's great. If not, it doesn't matter, he's won more than his fair share already. Federer's legacy is already set in stone regardless of Nadal's achievements (which are great too).

Nadal will eventually lose to other guys just like Fed does now because that is the nature of things.

Soderling was never a king, but he's a very good player and he's always a threat against the top players. He beat Nadal twice last year and he beat Fed this year as well, cutting his SF record. declaring him king is stupid but underestimating him is also not very smart.

I think you're off base too, but that wasn't the point. My point was, why do we keep getting these portents of doom by possible Nadal slayers? And one by one they keep becoming obsolete.

Until Juan parlays his 2009 results into a list of consistent performances without being derailed by injury, I think it's best to sit on the fence rather than passing judgment so hastily.

Last year Soderling was being praised to the high heavens, now he's been reduced to "occasional flashes of brilliances". It just seems disrespectful to laud someone one year, and the next year reduce him to nothing.

At this point we still don't know what Sod will achieve, him, Del Potro, or anyone else. Just because he didn't fulfill so many people's dreams in one match doesn't quite qualify him as a has been.

That's part of it, yes. I don't like his game at all. He's just a giant ballbasher, and the technique on his neanderthal forehand makes me cringe. Though I severely dislike him I must admit it was nice to see someone other than Federer or Nadal win a slam (though I found it kinda fluke-ish, but I digress).

Rafa is 4-3 vs Del Potro.

Even on hardcourts Del Potro only leads 3-2.

All 3 of those wins came last year, no surprise. Djokovic also beefed up his hardcourt record vs Rafa last year.

Soon the *******s will bring up all the slam winners from the past, they have already started with Safin. If Rafa somehow manages to win AO2011, Thomas Johansson would have certainly beaten that pusher Rafa.

All of the big hitters (Delpo/Sod/Berdy) are threats to everybody, including Fed and Rafa. It's hard to play that style of tennis and beat legends like Rafa and Roger consistently, though. They need to keep the winner/error ratio way up to have a chance, and it's just really hard to do. I see Del Potro winning a few more slams and Sod taking maybe 1, but I don't see any one player taking a serious chunk out of the grand slam titles right now.

The next 9 months could be very significant in tennis history. Rafa's gunning for GOAT while Roger's certainly going to do his best to re-assert himself.

Nah, even god himself can't beat peak Rafa. It's obvious. Safin wouldn't have stood a chance. Prime Roger, prime Safin, prime Sampras, they all suck on HC compared to Nadal, who will, out of the goodness of his heart, allow them to win a few games instead of triple-bageling them all. The "*******s" have got nobody left to their rescue, Nadal has conquered all.

In fact, Nadal is so pure and thoughtful that he allowed Del Potro, a young talent, to win the USO last year. He also felt sorry for Fed not winning anything in 2008 so he allowed him to take the USO. Such a pure heart by such a perfect gentleman. The number of games and sets he gives people out of kindness is just astonishing.

All hail king Rafa!

Vamos!

I think Murray/Djokovic/Delpotro will get better with time and challenge Nadal for the slams. Delpotro alone can not do it. It will be good for tennis if Nadal has a few good opponents and hopefully we will see a good rivalry devoloping between Nadal and these 3 players. Federer will be a threat for the next 2-3 years and can beat anyone on any sufrace on his day (except clay against Nadal).

I would personally like to see Djokovic improve and do better against Nadal. I think he has the game and talent to beat Nadal but he just needs a little improvement in some areas lilke net play and get his old serve back.

The next few years will not be easy for Nadal and I don't think he can win 3 slams per year like Federer used to. I think Nadal's opponents will rise to the occassion and beat him.
