Is Medvedev Really That Good?

Once again he's in a final of a tournament. He seems to be consistently reaching finals and semi-finals of tournaments. Is he really that good, or is he just getting lucky? What is he doing that other young players need to do?

if you're consistently getting 'lucky' more often than not, you can start to be pretty sure that isn't really luck.

Though maybe Woody Allen might disagree.

Option C, he's not lucky or good - it's just a weak era.

He’s not flashy, but he has decent rally game and he’s very consistent atm. No big weaknesses either. Reminds me of Goffin in his best days.

There was an official TW guide posted for those like you...

To the OP, he has the shots and great defense / transition game.
His fitness is questionable (obvious at AO).

It was a weak era in 2017 as well when Federer won two slams. I'm not a one dimensional clown like you.

He blows a bit hot and cold, but if he gets hot, he tends to be hot for an entire tournament, and in weaker tournaments that's always enough for a very deep run or a win. Hasn't really had any high profile wins though, but his game is solid as hell.

That being sad, I think he's getting more consistent. His game is terrible on clay though.

He's very good. I kept saying Djokovic was very good in their AO match but critics ignore how good Medvedev was to denigrate Nole's performance there. They'll rethink that match as Medvedev continues to produce good results. He moves well and is incredibly steady off the ground. Not a flashy player but more reliable than Tsitsipas.

He has exceptional control on his groundstrokes, and moves well for such a tall player. What worries me for him is his body type. It doesn't strike me as particularly durable in the GS format. We'll see...

Sorry to interrupt you..

But neither could I understand what movie you were guys talking about, nor did I recognize the scenes...
Would you please share the movie title with me also? I am also interested in these kinds of movies...

thanks in advance..

His mind is also questionable.....
Come on man, what are you trying to do?? You're above 6'6" and trying to grind out novak!!!?? Who is ungrindable to almost everyone, not named nadal/murry
I agree, however, I think his plan B was poor and he did not expect to have his legs “cut off” after 1.5 sets.

His backhand is very controlled, accurate, and reliable - I like it. His forehand is sloppy and inconsistent - poor technique. Another kid's potential stifled by 'modern' forehand coaching.

Easily one of the craftiest of the younger guys.
His backhand is really solid. Forehand can be a dangerous shot, but on average needs improving.
But If his serve isn't clicking his overall game is too defensive.
At a 250/500 event it shouldn't be a problem, but he'll have difficulty making it deep at the bigger events.

Unlike a true power grinder like Zverev, Medvedev shots don't have as much weight, easy to see why his game doesn't translate well on clay.

His game, as others noted, seems more solid than exciting. He's not an exceptional shotmaker (yet) but is a big guy who can air out his serve, has a plus backhand (which can become more of a weapon) and a decent forehand. He moves well, and seems to have a solid temperament.

He could finish Top 10 this year, and we'll see from there.

Consistent aggression. He's got a good serve, a good backhand, a good forehand, a good return - he can be aggressive off all of those shots. But he's also got good movement, and is able to use those shots to put on pressure - he can keep a rally going, without really "going" for "big shots", and still put the ball deep and make the other guy work for it.

Consistency and power - great combination. In addition, he's put everything together so he's been able to bring a high level for many matches in a row, and throughout the whole match, without too many dips or freebies to his opponent.

There's really no magic to it. The other youngsters need to do the same - become able to bring their top level all match long without dips, and become able to be aggressive without overhitting and missing.

He's probably good enough to win a slam when the big 3 retire.

The future looks unwatchable for tennis. Khanchov, Rublev, Demon, Medvedev all competing for slam titles o_O

I hope Tsitsi, Shapo and Felix can step it up.

Rather Khachanov and Medvedev than Shapo. Although Tsitsipas is also my pick of the bunch. And De Minaur my last pick.

His record against top 10 isn't great, and he hasn't done well in big events. Let's see how he does this season.

He's a top player..I would even say he is a future Grand Slam winner
Why?
Number of reasons..If you look closely at this shots there is an unusual fluidity in his hands. His backhands and forehands both have that quality..At first it stuck me as unusual but when I looked closely it has that extra fluidity. So it gives him a bit more power on these shots.

Next is his movement,he moves like a mad man ..Even in his match against Novak,he was running like crazy. That is always a top top quality..

And there is his usual qualities of a top player, great serve and great backhand..

Lastly,he played a terrific match against Novak..And it was the only difficult match Novak faced in the whole tournament..You cannot be doing that if don't have potential..

He literally destroyed Monfills..

His strokes are loose (wouldn’t call them fluid as they look quite spastic to me, and not too pretty either) but that doesn’t necessarily translate to GS success. He reminds me of a toned down version of Dolgopolov. But he has a very stable and dangerous game, as others have said. Can go far.

Unfortunately, he does not have the legs or the stamina to last 7 best of 5 matches to win Slams.

Agreed, he seems to fade sometimes late in a match.

But, he's young and with some recent wins $$$ he can now hire a better team for conditioning/recovery etc.

Just depends how hard he wants to work. He seems like one of the more dedicated/least distracted of the Next Gen so his prospects are better than most...

Not sure how you'd prefer watching Shapo to Khachanov or Medvedev but to each their own. ;)

N.B. I have only seen Felix Auger-Aliassime play once, but I wouldn't think his style is very "exciting," either. Isn't it really that he, Shapo, and Tsitsipas can all for various non-tennis related reasons appeal to an Anglophone audience more than can eastern Europeans?

Shapovalov, FAA and Tsitsipas appeal more because they are better all-around and agressive players, that's it.

Medvedev is good, great serve, great backhand, good movement and consistency but his net skills and FH are real weaknesses. For me he is more like a Gasquet.

But that should be enough to break into the top 10 this year I think.

It was stamina that proved the difference in his match with Djokovic.

His backhand is super compact, ridiculously consistent and powerful!

Very regimental game. Reminds me of Seppi.

Close to top 5 level. Hugely impressive player.
