Is my string pattern the issue or the weight of racket?

Hello all,

I have been currently playing with a Head Graphene XT Speed pro (18x20) of course. I play a reasonably high level. However,I'm finding it a struggle to get a good depth with the speed consistently. Power and control is not the issue here. I tried a friends Mantis 285g (16x19) 100 sq inch and he thought my depth of shot was much better. The Speed feels a lot more solid feeling but just not getting the length. Do you think it's more of a weight issue or the string pattern?

look forward to your replies :).

I'm guessing the 18x20 pattern is the reason. When I switch from my 16x19 Tec 315LTD to my Microgel Radical MP 18x20, I seriously have to change my swing angle to get enough depth with it.

Thanks for your replies. If weight was more of the issue wouldn't you also hit short or is a weight issue more the feeling of fatigue after a few competitive sets?

Weight alone wouldn't really be it... swingweight perhaps. And yes, it too can make you relatively shorter.

As to why it isn't the issue... the Speed Pro is heavier.

depth can improved by your swing and you did not mention you string setup.
are you a flat ball hitter, or execute a good topspin stroke..?
few options:
string setup with a bit more power.
analyze (vids or coach) your swing and foot work on deep shots.
Monitor from the baseline on attempted deep shots, how high the ball is over the net.
It should be about the window of three of head sizes(again from the baseline) ...
lead in the hoop.
if all result is zippo... shorties...

You can try a more open string pattern.

SpinToWin - is that the theory that a heavier racket would offer more depth than a lighter racket? Because you said "as to why it isn't the issue...Speed Pro is heavier."

CoPolyX - I currently use Head Sonic Pro in the mains and a Head synthetic gut in the cross both at 54lbs. I use Head strings because our coach is sponsored by them. He has Sonic Pro Edge, Sonic Pro, Lynx, Synthetic Gut, Rip Control. I have found ball trajectory quite alot lower to the net with the speed pro. The review on the Speed Pro seemed to have a high rating on topspin so maybe it's me. I Definitely hit a shorter ball and opponents find my shots with the Speed alot easier to return.

the speed pro has about the tightest center main pattern and lowest launch angle of any racquet i have used, including the prestige mp and other 18x20s. it takes adjustment and conscious effort to hit the ball deep with it. part of why i have a love/hate relationship with it. if it had a more open pattern i would have stopped holicing a while ago

Depth in relation to power ... that "theory" assumes that you are able to accelerate the heavier racket as much as the lighter.
So which is better with respect to power is individual. If the racket is to heavy you may actually get more power out of a lighter one.

You might also back your tension down to help. The 18X20's that I've played, I had to string them about 10 pounds looser than the 16X19's for them to feel good.

I agree with Rabbit,

I don't think this is a big issue where you want to change your whole racquet spec. Since you are currently using 54 lbs, try 52 lbs and go down little by little until you find the good depth you are looking for.
