Is Nadal about to get Soderling'd again?

Back at the 2014 Australian Open, Nadal was gunning for the double career grand slam. After Stan knocked out Novak in the quarterfinals, Nadal and his fans had already began celebrating. But, in the final, Stan showed us something we had seen before. Nadal has no answer for a zoning big hitter. Soderling did it back at the 2009 French Open. Del Potro did it a few months later at the US Open. Rosol did it at Wimbledon. And countless others have done it since.

This year, he is gunning for "La Decima." With Novak out of order and the young generation yet to really hit their stride, it feels like de ja vu as the stars have aligned for Nadal to complete another milestone.

But tomorrow he is playing Thiem and a rematch with Stan likely awaits him in the final. If either opponent plays his best tennis, there's nothing Nadal can do.

With two chances to get blown out in the final 2 rounds of the French Open, are we likely to see Nadal fall flat on his face yet again?

Lol. I don't think 2016 Nadal is afraid of 2016 Soderling, let alone Thiem.

How many games could retired Soderling win off Nadal today?

Gotta admit I'm dreaming...

Didn't have a chance to see the match v. Djok, but he smoked him real horrorshow! Think he'd been on the other end, recently. Turned a bad match-up on its ear... what can he do in a better one?

It's a well known fact that Nadal injured his back right before AO 2014, and anyone who was not trying to not see it, could see it.
And Yes he lost to Soderling, once, here. So effing what?

Yes. He was injured during the AO 2014 F with Stan. Just like he was injured during the 2009 RG match with Soderling. Just like he was injured during the match with Del Potro. And Rosol. And, if he loses to Thiem or Stan, he will have been injured during that match too. We know.

Lol...well done!!! :D:D:D:p

We know what happened in the final 2010 French open.
No one can beat healthy Nadal.
He's been handled in due course elsewhere by many. Even the old reliable whipping boy--and by old, I mean old ;)--had his way with him this spring. Healthy or not, I suspect you may wish to amend your remarks.

Hilarious, but Nadal in 3 unless the wind dies.

LOL it was obvious to anyone he was hurt in the AO final. Do you honestly think he just quit playing and was serving 70 mph so he could claim he was hurt after losing 1 set? This is a guy who plays every point like it's his last. You act like he is Kyrgios.

Did he fake his appendectomy? Fake his stress fracture in his foot that he won wimbledon with? Did he fake his wrist injury last year that caused him to pull out before his 3rd round match started? Was he scared he was going to lose that one???? And yeah he wanted everyone to really fool everyone after 09 RG loss so he pulled out of wimbledon to make it look legit. You got it man.

You haters crack me up.

Too bad Fed doesn't have the talent to be a zoning hitter. Otherwise maybe the H2H would be 14-23 instead of 23-14, no? :D

you mean Nadal will be injured ?
yeah, certainly possible.
i think rafa is pretty tense actually.

but i think 2009 nadal was injured before french open.
of course a freak accident like 2014 AO final could happen.

Yes, I remember how sureshs and @TheLoneWolf were celebrating, and creating threads galore.

But this time Ralph will triumph and become teh greatest ever to play tennis.

lol @ thelonewolf. That guy was terrible at not getting banned. Haven't seen him around for years.
TheLoneWolf was terrible, period. He then went to MTF where he soon got banned, too*. He has quite a knack at getting banned !

(* Chico told me he Soderling'ed TLW at MTF)

Oh, The Lone Wolf !! Whatever happened to him. Monfed, Clarky etc. Those were the days ;)
I do miss Clarky21. I wonder if she is around here using some other name. Her nicknames for Djoker were funny. And how she underestimated Nadal, the Nadal fan base hated her for that !
She has been spotted at reddit/tennis with the name bette21 or something like that.

Thiem hits the ball extremely hard, and from way back in the court.
That might prove to be the aspect of Thiem's game that helps Rafa, to be honest. If you hit hard and take the ball very early, then Nadal tends to have issues.

It's not big hitting per se that gives Nadal fits, it's a big hitter that rushes Rafa that gives him fits.

Thiem's game doesn't tend to rush Nadal, although to Thiem's benefit he does rush Nadal far more than a player who hits puff balls from way behind the baseline. Thiem is performing very well under stress too, where he swings for the fences and manages to land his shots in. That kind of play could quite conceivably drain Rafa.

IMO, Thiem is going to have to hit big angled shots if he wants to take it to Nadal. He's got the tools to do it, but I haven't seen him do that consistently before.

Still, I think this match is going to come down to which version of Nadal shows up for the SF. If the 2015 Nadal or Rome 2017 Nadal shows up, Thiem will get him in four or even five. If Nadal is in imperious form then Thiem might as well pack his bags, because Thiem is more likely pick up an injury trying than score an upset.

LOL.

Funniest thing I read here today. Great stuff! :)

Anyone who thinks it's impossible is kidding themselves, Thiem played a smart match in Rome, he moved in much closer, and took time away. I don't think comparing this situation to those others make much sense though, this is Paris, not New York, and not Melbourne, and Thiem doesn't have the advantageous height that Soderling and Del Potro had. He's like 6 foot with a one handed backhand, historically that should make him lunch for Nadal.

I think as much as anything it will come down to mentality. How will Thiem handle the occasion, how will he cope with trying to back up the previous big win with another big performance? If he can do both of those things (and I know he's spoken about having to do the second of those better after he failed to do it in Rome) then the sheer size of his groundstrokes, and general aggression should certainly make life difficult for Rafa.

Who do you want to win in the semi finals? asking about both matches

I am with Stan and Thiem

Stan v Thiem would be a fun match to watch, and I think many more would be neutral in such a situation. Nadal and Murray are much more polarizing figures than the other two imo. So it would nice to see it.

Soderling lost to Rafa 6-1, 6-0 in Rome in 2009 and we all know what happened later.
Interesting parallel.

How do you know Clarky was even a "she"? Was "she" even a Djokovic fan? I remember lots of doping insinuations.

All this ' If such n such is in the zone, Rafa has no chance' nonsense LOL Really its if Rafas in the zone, no one else on the tour has a chance, other than zoning Djokovic.
