madrid is positioned awkwardly in the european clay season.........it's always a dilemma whether to take a break after barcelona which rafa considers very personal and important.........i am sure he would have wiped the floor with zverev and co. in madrid had he rested for the event.........

it's not that he is bad in madrid conditions.........actually roland garros in dry conditions is faster than any clay event........it all depends on how fit and ready rafa is for a particular clay tournament.........he had losses at all events when he played well below his full capacity.........so it has nothing to do with clay or the field, everything on clay depends on nadal's own form and fitness, nothing else matters..........and this is applicable only to nadal on clay, no one else on any surface........you all have to deal with this reality, no escaping that.........

So when Nadal loses, its because he hasn't rested properly? (n) wow why can't you give the credit to Zverev on a well played tournament. Nadal is the greatest clay courter of all time but this is ridiculous. You don't have to convince us. The op is trolling. Zverev also had injury problems recently. So Nadal's lack of rest is not an excuse. Just accept that Zverev was the better man that day. And no RG is not faster atleast not faster than Madrid. Rafa does well because of the big court which he uses to stay back to put any ball in play.

You mean since 2018. In 2017 he won 4 out of the 5 clay titles, including Madrid.
Why is it that 2018 is apparently always seen as some kind of bad clay season from Nadal? 2018 Nadal did the exact same thing as 2017; won Barcelona, two Masters 1000 and RG. He just lost a set at RG and played a few tiebreakers, so slightly less dominant in terms of level than 2017. Maybe it's not a super memorable clay season by him, but it's definitely still one of the consistent ones.

Actually, after that, 2019 is basically comparable to 2014, 2020 only had two clay tournaments but he did win RG again without dropping a set. Maybe his level the past three/four years looked a little worse, but for the most part it didn't amount to him having drastically worse results.

2018 Claydal was epic and he had the golden kit I loved.
