Is Nadal too dependent on Uncle Toni?

I noticed he was looking at his box several times with his arms raised. Was he looking to get some advice from his box? Without uncle Toni there to give his nephew some tips, Nadal looked lost esp. in the third set.

Any thoughts? Maybe they should have a tv in the box with uncle Toni watching through a webcam live?? :D

Do you guys agree that Nadal looked lost without Toni sitting in the box?

I think Uncle Toni prefers Rafa to have some time on tour without him to given him some space for him to work with other members of the coaching team.

Plus Toni has a family of his own to look after. I'm sure Rafa isn't too dependent on him and he'll be back court side at Monte Carlo

I think he needs a real tennis coach to bring his game to the next level.

A number one should be able to hit a flat FH. If he could learn to flatten his strokes out and take balls on the rise he would be scary. unfortunately tony doesn't know about this stuff.

It's annoying that he only plays reverse FHs.

I like him as a person and cheer for him rather than federer, but one can't deny that his inability to hit a flat FH on the rise is a weekness.

If Nadal wants to hit a flat forehand on the rise, he will do it. If he wants to hit a flat forehand half volley, he can do it. The guy is #1 in the world. Saying he is unable to hit certain shots is just ridiculous. He can hit whatever he wants, he just chooses not to.

I think his natural grip limited his ability to hit flat ball on the rise. If he has the same mechanic as Agassi, I can see he can do it with much ease. Also, hitting flat on the rise is risky...Nadal likes to play it safe by keeping the ball in. He rely/confident on his groundy to win. There are strength and "weakness" for everything.

Excuse me, but Rafa has climbed to #1 in the world with uncle toni as coach, a bad match is not much of a reason to change coaches.
Besides Novak is in top form and pretty much beating everyone right now, give him credit.

I've seen him flatten his forehand before, he just doesn't do it much because that's not his game. It's pretty tough to fault his technique considering his credentials. Yes he can improve on some things and it's obvious he constantly works to improve.

Exactly, this reminds me of the poster in the Fed thread saying he can coach Fed better than Annacone. Occasionally we need to give credit to the other player, for they were better that day. Djokovic is playing incredible tennis and Nadal was nowhere near his best.

His uncle never goes to Indian Wells and Rafa won this tournament twice, so no.

Thats not the point of the thread. The thread isn't specific to Indian Wells. Everytime he struggles he starts to look at his box for help & he was lost yest when he didn't get any advice from Toni...

Nobody but one poster has said he needs to change his coach. I think everyone understands this...

Nadal is too dependent on serve. And yes, I never thought I would be typing that last sentence :)

Given his serving problems, do you think Nadal will REVERT back the grip change of UsOpen that give him an extra 12 mph? He could start spinning his serves in like the Nadal of old and get a higher percentage.

Of course that will make him a less effective player, but we won't see the meltdowns of the kind we saw against Djoker yesterday..

Why do people always have to dig up excuses? Nadal could have 10 coaches texting him what to do and still lose to a player who is just playing tennis that we have never seen before. Similarly, Roger could fire, hire anyone he wishes, but there are things that neither he or Nadal can control. Djokovic is beyond everything at the moment.

It happens. Accept it and life becomes quite easier.

I remember when playing singles tennis meant 'singles' tennis. Not getting tips (where to place a serve) from a "coach" or "camp" during a match.

I realize Nadal is not the only one like this. Lots of players these days seem to be looking for approval and/or tips and ideas from people associated with them in the stands. This really annoys me as it's AGAINST THE RULES! But I guess it's the norm now and maybe the future of tennis down the road.

Maybe my memory of matches in the 70's-90's is fading but I don't recall it being anything like today. It seems like players today rely on their coaches or entourage DURING a match. It should be ONLY before or after you are on the court.

Sorry for the rant. Just my opinion.

FUTURE BOX SCORE: Nadal/Toni def. Federer/Annacone 6-3 6-7 6-4

P.S. Don't get me started on toweling off after every point. :)
