Watching Andy Roddick play Roger Federer it appears to me while Andy tries everything he can in all parts of his game to win points, it is only his serve that keeps him in matches with Federer that he manages to be in. So is there any area Roddick is better in then Federer, other then the serve?

Overheads? ;)

Roddick is a good player, even my favorite player. He is improving and will continue to improve.

I think there are a lot of extremely good players out there, even some with very complete games. The problem is that Federer is just simply better. Nothing else to it, if you ask me.

Who says his serve is better? Federer has pace, spin, variation, placement etc. Roddick may be fast, but Federer doesn't seem to have trouble breaking him. Federer hit more aces than Rod in the final of USO.

Well Roddick has more aces vs other players then Federer does. If Roddick has less aces then Federer in their matchups, it is because of Federer's returning extremely well, and able to read Roddicks serve.

On top of that Roddick still wins more free points on serve then Federer when they play each other. Federer has more aces usualy, but if you add the service winners and forced return errors to the aces, Roddick would pass Federer without a problem.

I agree. Why is it a given that Roddick's serve is better than Federer's? I'd bet if you looked at the stats over the past three years, you'd find that it's harder to break Federer's serve than it is to break Roddick's.

But there is something that Roddick does better than Federer. Dating!

Absolutely! Changing girlfriends, and changing coaches, is something Roddick does better then Federer in easily.

Roddick's forehand is mesiles better then Feederes's forehand!!! It is way morea placed better, mores directed better, more manuevered better, more touched, more consistent, moreas angled, more varieted, and more powderful by far!

Those are 8 things where you are wrong, cutiepie.

he flips out better than federer. some of the stuff he says on the court are hysterical. federer never gets mad at umpires or linesman. also his serve is better but federer fans will never admit that someone does something better than him.

Thats cuz Federer can return everything.

I'd say that's because the rest of Federer's game is so much better than Roddick's, not because his serve is.

Roddick's serve can dominate matches alone, against lesser players at least. Federer dominates with the rest of his game, not his serve.

So yes, I'd agree with the premise that Roddick's serve is better than Federer's.

I voted yes. He is better at gaining publicity for major tennis events.
haha, you're kidding right? Guess what! Most major tennis events happen outside the US where Federer and Nadal are worth 30 times the publicity of Roddick. It makes me laugh how some people living inside the bubble of America think that it's the same everywhere else - it speaks volumes (and not just for tennis).
By the way since when is Roddicks serve better than Federer? In the US Open final Roger hit 16 aces and no double faults, Roddick hit 7 aces and a double fault. Federer won 84% of the points on his first serve against Roddicks 66%. You should listen to your girlfriend when she says it's not all about speed, it's what you do with it that counts.

I take it that this was an attempt at humor, right?

Not really. I also think Federer's serve is better. Not to discredit Roddick, as he's been playing extrmely well lately, but Federer's game is just better.

I think Roddick is a better loser than Federer. Every time he loses to Federer, like this year in the US Open, he is very quick to praise Federer in his defeat,
answering the compliment about "Top of the Mountain" with "Close to the Top".

Wheras Federer simply says that he was tired, or maybe that he was playing a lefty, or 1-dimensional player, and therefore lost.

You're right. When Roddick loses he admits his defeat and credits his opponent. Jerks like Fed, Ljubucic, and others on tour always comes up with a lame excuse. I don't know why people hate Roddick so much? They've been hating Roddick ever since last year's US Open first RD loss. As in person he seems like a much better than the others on the tour.

Roddick's serve looks like a fastball while Fed's serve is elegant and simple. It has greater disguise since his back is turned away.Roddick's serve is great against guys who cant return it.

Roddick is better at whining, swearing at the officials, and of course losing. Seriously, nothing Roddick does tops Federer, on the tennis court. Federer is better at Every aspect of the game.

isnt everyones serve good against guys that cant return it. his serve is better he gets more free points than federer. but thats about it.

lol @ delusional midsize-worshippers

110-120 mph serves at 50% is better than consistent 130+ at 70-75% now? I don't see how a 50% accurate serve is placed nearly as well as a 70% one. Let alone a 70% one with greater spin and pace. If Roddick had Federer's serve, he would be a floating top 20 at best. Federer with Roddick's serve, or even Sampras' serve, would've pulled a Laver by now.

Roddick's serve is junk!!!Its not about speed!!!!!People fall in love with speed, its about placement and nobody does it better right now then Fed.

i second that. fed's serve is much harder to break with its superb placement and it is much harder to read, whereas roddick only has power going for him, and once people (like fed and murray) began picking up on it, they had no problem blocking it back and beating him from the back court.

A 115mph serve that catches both lines(Federer) is way more effective than a 135mph serve into the opponents money zone(Roddick).

I'd say the stats are misconstrued because aces are determined by the ability of the returner. At the USO Final with Federer and Roddick; Roddick just isn't that great of a returner so he got aced quite a bit.

There should be a seperate stat of "unreturnable serves." Because it's how Roddicks serves are. They have a lot of action, pace or good placement and cause people to not return them back. It's like with Federer and his "Unforced Errors" a lot of them are forced errors heh. The stats need to be redesigned and updated.

Roddick has a better serve (he can hit the angles, he can get some serious kick, he can get pace and do quite a bit), but his return of serve & ground game and net game is terrible.

But on a personal level; I'd take Roger Federers serve. The motion is really nice and classic.

if this is true, roddick whould have won his second US open title mate'...

Roddick is better at

choking,
losing critical matches,
getting rattled under pressure,
gettting passed at net,
getting drop shotted,
getting pulled wide and unable to cover a shot cross court,
getting beat in week 1 of majors,
and better at looking at winners fly by that he has no chance of playing,
and being an American on the tennis court

than Federer.

Not to single you out entirely, but this is the most egregious example of what's wrong with this entire thread.

SERIOUSLY FOLKS. THIS IS NOT A GOOD THREAD QUESTION. As I see it, the thread isn't really asking a genuine question so much as baiting Fed fans and/or Roddick haters to say the same 300 things you already say on every other thread.

MOREOVER, IT'S NOT LIKE THIS COMPARISON IS PARTICULAR TO RODDICK IN ANY WAY. If I posted "Is _______ better than Federer in any way?", we'd all be hard-pressed to identify a player who outshines Fed in any one area. We can all say Nadal in terms of mental toughness, maybe Henman in volleying skills. But that's about it. Seriously. We can all make pretty compelling arguments that Federer is better than almost everybody at almost everything.

Is that a good discussion topic? Are we generating any interesting or controversial opinions that require nuanced, well-reasoned arguments? Read the above posts for a clear answer to those questions.

The closest "debate" question is whose serve may actually be better: Fed's or Andy's. On the tour overall, the numbers clearly show that Andy wins more outright points off the serve alone. But Fed has an amazing serve--a huge weapon that not only sets up his ground game but wins him SO many critical points.

Bottom line for me: Roddick's done pretty darn well these past 4 years with his oh-so-substandard game. Fed's superhuman abilities shouldn't diminish Roddick's achievements.

I agree with you, as long as we both agree that everything I stated is indeed a fact.
I'll agree with your list, but I actually think Fed is prone to some of those things as well. He can choke for sure (even though he's usually up so many breaks in a set that it never matters.) And he actually gets passed a lot at net for someone with such a supposedly good net game. But yes, in this comparison, Roddick is worse than Fed.

And one more thing: it's kind of a cheap shot at Andy to say the "lose the first week at majors" thing. Last I checked, he's had a stellar record at the past 12 or so majors, maybe better than anyone else other than Federer overall. (It's between Roddick and Hewitt for overall slam performance. I'll add Nadal once he goes deep at the Aussie or the US Open.)

But, the comparison is between Federer and Andy, not everyone else.

And I must admit, I don't recall the last time Roger was dismissed during week 1 of a major.

look roddick has a better serve thats what the thread is about. roddicks serve is easly top 5 of all time right behind sampras. so many guys would love to be able to get that many free points of there serve. also he gets alot of crap because his game isnt technically very good but it is effective. all u people who are mesmerized by feds smooth strokes dismiss everyone elses strokes as mediocre.

Nadalgirl!! Just because you are jealous that Nadal likes me way better than he likes you, he doesn't even know you, and you are jealous and pick on me! You know that I'm really Roger and you say that Andy has a better forehand than me?? Sweet Rafa is mine and I will only share him with Mirka.

Please chase after Andy, you can have Shriekapova.

Also, was it you that casused my Rafa to hurt his ankle, he told me, crying after losing to Youzny that some crazy chick was chasing after him in New York and he twisted his ankle trying to run away. I told him that he should wear looser knickers but he just won't listen.

French Open to Guga in 2004, maybe?

Yes, I know this is the comparison of the thread. It's just a lousy comment to make when Andy's record, despite being worse than Fed's, is pretty darn good relative to the rest of the tennis-playing planet. Seems like an odd thing to pick on in this comparison.

Any of you that think feds serve is better than roddicks have no clue.Fed does have a great serve but not as good as andys.

If you compare the aces when they are playing each other then you have no idea what is going on.Roddicks serve is at least 30% better than feds, but feds return game is 80% better than roddicks.

I would say fed is the best return man in the game+andy is not even in the top 20!! Roddick would not make it past the top 30 without that serve.

I was at cincy watching andy serve+for any of you who think that speed doent mean anything have no clue.Andys serve speed stood out far more than everybody else+you could see how much pressure it puts on the opponent.
