Roger Federer has now surpassed the 7 titles of Pete Sampras and William Renshaw now he has won the Gentleman's singles for the record 8th time is he now not just the greatest men's champion in the history of Wimbledon but perhaps the greatest grass courter, or surely there can be no doubt now ?

Well, yeah.

I mean, yeah. Yeah.

- All time singles title record (STANDS ALONE) - Eight titles

- All time consecutive singles title record (shared with Borg) - Five titles
- All time title defence record (shared with Borg) - Has defended the title four times
- All time record of finals reached (STANDS ALONE) - Eleven finals
- All time record of consecutive finals reached (STANDS ALONE) - Seven finals
- All time record of matches won (STANDS ALONE) - 91 matches won

- Won the tournament in straight sets
- Also won the Junior title in 1998
- And is the oldest person to win in the Open Era

He also stands alone on semifinals, quarterfinals, and consecutive semifinals.

There's no contest of any sort here. He owns this tournament.

No matter how many times he wins it, he can never top the second guy, what was his name?

Wikipedia to the rescue:
Patrick Francis "Frank" Hadow
He was the loftiest Wimbledon Champion. He played at Wimbledon whilst on holiday from his coffee plantation in Ceylon. He did not defend his title – and is therefore the male champion never to have lost a set in singles there. He returned to Wimbledon nearly half a century later to collect a commemorative medal from Queen Mary for being the oldest surviving champion.

Beat that Federer.

PS: oh yeah, and this guy invented the lob.

8 titles, and 11 finals? What reasoning is there against it? You can argue over little niggling technicalities like who is the greatest grass court player ever, and would he have won so many on fast grass, but when it comes down to determining the greatest Wimbledon player of all? Not much of a contest. Certainly not among men anyway.

Federer could and perhaps should have won 9 possible even 10 Wimbledon' titles definitely should have won 2008 maybe 2014 and certainly not 2015 was outplayed

That won in 08 is still a painful match to watch even 9 years on, I think Federer should have won the final set he was at one point 2 points away and a break up, I was 21 at the time I remember he had so many chances in the tie break to break nadal I think the rain delays effected him It would have been fantastic had he won 7 straight Wimbledon's that have been better than Sampras who won 7 in 8 years plus he would have now at least 9
. it is such a shame he lost the 2008 one, from 2 sets down to get it back to level he played the game of his life but when the rain came before the decider he had nadal on the ropes should have lost 4 set tie break at 4-1 down but broke back, I think it was starting to get to nadal and then on return from rain delat was not able to capitalise against break point chances But it would not have been surprising if Federer had got 7 in a row. He was supremely dominant on grass between 2003 and 2009 ,So 7 in a row for time span was extremely possible. I think had he won 7 in a row from 2003-2009 he could have got to ten W. titles Also, had he won WB in 2008 , he maybe would have lost one the next year. OP don't understand that a change here, would possibly change other things after that. losing that final although it was cruel as he should have won the 5th set probably helped Federer because he would have been on after that final on 6 straight titles and might not have won anymore as the pressure of trying to break the all time record of 7 straight the next year, but beating nadal which would have been 3 years in a row would have inspired him to win more he might not have gone from 2009-2012 without winning he could have gone onto to 9 or 10 titles
is academic to think had Federer won 08 Wimbledon then he would have had 7 straight titles as no one really stood in his way from 2003-2009 apart from Roddick and Nadal
