Good for you I suppose, because I sometimes don't lol, and no, I don't believe they can all be 100% sure every time. I know they are pros and I'm just a Sunday Club hack, but there it is...

You know, I would love some to hear some pros talk about double bounces on full stretch and their experiences with them
This one was so massively obvious that even YOU would have realized ;)

Sometimes I feel like giving the guy another chance, but every time he just ups the ante. The verdict is out and it is clear: Rune is scum.

It's not a players job to call out mistakes, should they? Sure. It's the right thing to do and makes you likable but it's not your job. He's probably going to get a lot of backlash over this story but he got the result he needed so I doubt he'll care.

In cricket, there are some who walk and there are some who don't despite knowing they've nicked it and been caught at slip.

Adam Gilchrist was a walker. He would not wait for the Umpire. Others would wait for the umpire no matter what.

Is tennis any different? Not sure if Rune knew or not. The umpire should've spotted that.

I will always give players the benefit of the doubt when it comes to double bounces on the full stretch, it can be very difficult to tell (this jist from personal experience) and I refuse to believe that every time this happens, every player is showing poor sportsmanship, when not conceding the point.
I agree. Balls are going fast and I don't think players know if it bounced twice or not.

Rune is way classier than Federer that's for sure. Federer hit a kid in the face and laughed about it, something he should have been disqualified for. Also, wasn't Federer fined for tanking?
Rune is a notch above that Swiss deadbeat.

Okk.. Thats the dude in the Rune coaching box. I knew he looked familiar. Forensic Files

Only thing more scandalous is the official highlights of the match which lasted two minutes and cut off midway during a point

If he did that on purpose, he's a cheater and there's nothing more to discuss.
We can only hate on him more and more.
Wait, currently 39% of voters don't think he is cheater. Are voters really ignorant, or
would it be OK to hate on him anyways?

ATP scriptwriters have told Rune to play the calculating villain for the next 15 years while Carlos plays the simpleminded hero in this epic duel between Good and Evil that will eventually become a comic book and Disneyland ride. So, Rune has to act the part and he did on this point;)

Should we watch wrestling instead of tennis?

My take: do auto-calls on Hawkeye even on clay but install high-speed cameras at the Masters level or above and allow three wrong "close call challenges" to determine stuff like double-bounce, shirt contact, foot fault...and maybe even allow a close call challenge for line calls on clay as people make the argument about Hawkeye not being accurate on clay all the time.

Just like VAR in football or overturning a call in baseball. A lot of the times the controversy isn't even around line calls and if technology can aid why not? Also with the mechanism we are not spending more time than a few years ago, when we did the same number of challenges but for line calls. Now that the time is saved on line calls we are simply allocating that time for something else.

Better than Rune insulting our intelligence by saying "the point is over" and "he's sorry for Cerun" lol. This is not the medieval ages and wrong calls if determined to be wrong with video evidence should be overturned - this stuff should be built into the rules.

I've played a good number of people who hit after 2 bounces and then I say it bounced twice and they say no it didnt and they take the point. If the ball bounces twice on my side I either don't hit it or hit it in the net. I should just stop the ball and pick it up to save some energy.

I have just finished reading the posts in this thread, and I can affirm that I hate Rune with fervent intensity.

Rune lost me (not that he cares) when he was angrily shouting at his mother.

When someone shows you who they really are, listen...
I don't see how thats a who he really is rather than a childish temper tantrum losing control of his emotions on the court as a young kid under a huge amount of pressure playing professional tennis

Terrible.
Terrible cause you're assuming he's lying? You do realize its literally impossible for you to know whether he knew it was a double bounce or not when he played the point? And the fact the the umpire/linesmen missed it makes it extremely believable he didn't know it was a double bounce either until the replay

It's the umpire's job and he screwed up badly and Rune showed terrible sportsmanship. Both things are true.
Whats true is its impossible for you to know 100% for sure whether Rune was aware or not during the point and if the umpire didn't even realize it obviously its very possible Rune didn't realize either. Its literally the umpires job to watch out for this and he didn't even know

Exactly people have a ridiculous tendency to pretend they know for sure someone is being dishonest. Probably paranoia defense mechanism caused by human dishonesty throughout the history of our race which can screw you over, so better safe than sorry.

One of the worst cheaters I've ever seen.

That was a clear double bounce and he was happy to take it, how can anyone defend him after that? And he almost always takes a MTO when his opponents start outplaying him. He should be ashamed of himself.
Oh right such a clear double bounce that the umpire didn't see it when its his job to see it. Hm... maybe not so clear after all.

If the umpire missed it why not Rune being unsure too and just playing the point?

Knowing Rune, I would assume that if he knew himself there was a double bounce, he would do just the same: stay silent.

Not admitting the double bounce is bad sportsmanship. Playing possum in the 4th set is active cheating. But Novak did it many times and it does work beautifully. I guess it is a kind of socially accepted cheating, like MTOs and toilet breaks.

So bashing Rune, AND Djokovic now?
I am in. Thanks.

What the hell are you talking about? Tennis umpires, even at the highest levels, are terrible with double bounces. Most of the time you can understand because it happens so quickly that both the player and umpire are duped. This was a clear double bounce and Rune saw it happen in real time.

If anything people have a ridiculous tendency to rationalize away evidence that goes against their firmly held opinions.

Did you ever play tennis or table tennis yourself? You know 100% when there is a double bounce. The ball and its impact feels totally different. Even when it‘s just a split second.

My take: a classy player would've conceded the point. Rune is not classy. However, he isn't a cheater. If he had called the point himself, he would have cheated. As it stands, the umpire made a mistake and he just knowingly allowed it to happen. It is a reason to dislike him, whatever his fans say, but it isn't cheating - just bad sportsmanship.

Not to mention this isn't a game for these players. This is the difference between earning tens of thousands more dollars or not. Rune keeping quiet wasn't only for him to win a match, it was tons of money on the line, points, and much more. It's their livelihood. I can't begrudge him for not stopping the ump from making a poor call since it isn't just a friendly match.

He's in the wrong, but I think more players than we'd admit might find themselves in the same situation.
