is sam groth the most powerfull server in current tennis?

I watched him against harrison and boy he can bring it. he is not really a good tennis player apart from his serve so he is probably rightfully out of the top200 but he served 140+ consistently during the match.

I think isner, raonic and karlovic are better servers but when it comes to pure heat nobody hits like groth.

does anyone know the average velocities of top servers last season?

He holds the fastest serve speed record, so I guess you are right.

yeah but often speed records are a little dubious especially when they are done at little challengers. but seeing him against harrison it looks definitely possible that he might have hit 250+.

I hope he draws Ralph at the AO, though it'd be more interesting if he draws him in the first week of Wimbledon.

all the talk among australian tennis people this last week or two has been how Sam has toned down his serve to get more of the things in..

there is no doubt he can hit it harder than he was in Brisbane, but he's going for more consistency, which in Sam Groth world means serving at 140+ instead of 150+

I have seen him up close back when all he wanted to do was hit everything as hard as he possibly could and it was genuinely scary!!

The interesting thing is that behind the massive but erratic game and the 'Sons of Anarchy' look, he is a very nice, intelligent and articulate guy..

Here's a little video I took of him at a WTT match: http://distilleryvesper1-9.ak.instagram.com/0e1e3b4ee76511e2bad822000a9f3047_101.mp4

The serve is massive. Not just speed but appears very heavy to the opponent.

I highly recommend putting the volume up for this one, just to get an idea of rackethead speed.

Here's a Roddick serve at a similar event for comparaison: http://distilleryvesper1-5.ak.instagram.com/afbe7ac4ec3611e28b6c22000a9e17e9_101.mp4

Roddick's serve looked wide.

But Groth's serve looks genuinely scary. Saw the replay of his match against Harrison and it was just boom from the start.

Thought this the other day as well. Looks like he's slowed it down to get that first serve % up. But you're spot on about what he's like off the court. I have a few mates who know him from when he played in Templestowe and he's apparently a real top bloke.

Here's an old match of him for people who haven't seen him. He's lost about 6-8kg since then if i recall.

Yes, he brings more heat than anyone I have ever seen. More than Roddick. It's downright scary. That guy's frame tells the story, but unfortunately he doesn't do much else exceptionally well.

Yes right now he is hitting biggest serves consistently, he seems to be better in rallies and volleys so maybe he will finally be top 100 permanently we will see, but agree his serve is fastest at regular base, 2nd is probably Olivetti 3rd Janowicz 4th Milos
