Is Sampras' 1998 French Open campaign the most epic journey we have ever seen in a slam?

2nd round: beats Brugurea, a two time winner.

QFs: beats Courier, a two time champion.

If we were to pause it right there he's already beaten 4 FO champions just to qualify for the SF. Who has Nadal had to beat at the FO? FO nobodies that's who.

SF: exhaustion from having to beat 4 FO champions before the semis and a tiebreak loss against Kafelnikov cost him the match against Kafelnikov, the eventual champion.

He's played 5 FO champions in the one FO event, and beat 4 of them. Phenomenal.

But bear in mind Sampras beat Kafelnikov in Russia on clay in the 1995 Davis Cup final when, which may come as a bit of a surprise to some of you clowns, the Davis Cup was a big deal.

So he's beaten 5 FO champions on clay, again, who has Nadal beaten on clay the one trick pony that he is?

And I thought Sampras reached FO semis in 1996.

Yeah Sampras had some big wins on clay. It's pretty impressive considering that Clay was never really his surface. His mental toughness and his hatred of losing (something most mugs on the tour today don't have) allowed him to still beat some top players on the surface.

Oh yes! Stupid Nadal, who wins 9 out of 11 French Opens he plays, so he cannot produce other RG winners who he can beat later. Unlike the smart and glorious Pete Sampras, who lets another player win every year, so his chances to beat a champion increase drastically.

And also stupid Djokovic of course. Imagine if he had beaten Wawrinka in last year’s final, Nadal would have beaten 6 RG champions in Djokovic alone. Because he beat him 6 times at RG before. Not to talk about Djokovic himself, who has already beaten 10 RG champions at RG (9x Rafa and 1x Federer)!

90's Clay, Dedans Penthouse , SoBad, TheNatural and the rest of Pete's clan like this thread.

Again, some sampras fan has tried to establish that sampras is a good clay court player too.The year that he has mentioned is also wrong. It might have happened in 1996.Totally, what a joke is this? The man, named Sampras is not a complete player who is no where in clay events.Beating former FO champions is not a big achievement but winning it, at least qualifying for the final. Stop stupid threads like this.Even sampras would laugh about this.

apart from that fantastic run, sampras is the worst multi GS winner on clay i can think of,
which is ironic because hes touted as one of the greatest of all time.
