Im trying to lose like 10-15 pounds. I play tennis like every day, for at least 2 hours each. Think thatll help me on my quest to lose weight?

IMHO tennis is a fantastic sport to help loose weight and stay trim and fit. Eating a well balanced diet along with playing tennis or other sports to be active is great to loose weight.

To lose weight increase the calories you burn, and decrease the calories you consume. Tennis will help you increase the calories you burn. However, you must be careful NOT to increase the calories you consume.

Compared to other sports, tennis is not the best way to burn off energy. Hockey, Soccer, Basketball and Football all involve more running and activity. BUT, if you're playing that much tennis, it could pay dividends as well. Just watch your diet.

Depends.. Football players don't really run unless they're recievers or running the play.. Most recreational football players dont even sweet!

main thing: how much you're eating. tennis will help with a more active metabolism, but not much.

and that's valid about all sports.

That's a good point. I guess I'm being subjective because whenever I play it's mega tiring because I always play receiver.

But basketball soccer and hockey? I don't sub in with bench players, so these three are very strenuous sports, you are constantly moving around at a high rate. Of course if you are the goalie or golf player that's a different story. ;)

Tennis will KEEP you pretty cut. I mean I wouldn't suggest making it your ONLY source of exercise but, if you're doing other things to try to lose weight, it'll help you keep it up and your muscles toned. During the winter, sometimes I take a month or so to do more weight training than tennis. Just to keep my abs flat and my arms firm. Then, I resume regular tennis play (a couple times a week). It's amazing how it'll keep the muscle work nice and firm and constant.

if you're playing 2 hours a day that could also contribute to why your wrist is hurting...if you have a wrist injury you need to give your muscles and tendons time to heal...take a few days off. (refering to your post in tennis/trips instruction)

Tennis increases your metabolism, as stated before like any activity. It will NOT burn more calories than more extreme sports, or basketball/football/soccer etc., or even DDR (which burns a hell of a lot O.O).

However, the most important part of losing weight is simply regulating calories and intake. It's not all the Atkin's diet, or only eating from a select food chain at certain times. Restrict yourself to more complex carbohydrates, try to cut out soda (or minimally, it's impossible at my age XD) and candy/chocolate/snacks, and be sure not to eat too much.

You'll lose more weight naturally, especially with the added metabolism from all the tennis you're playing. Coincidentally, you'll find you'll be able to move more freely and your tennis will get even better, too.

HAha I love DDR. I'm SO BAD at it. But the kids who spend all day at the mall doing it are in super good shape. Buy the ps2 DDR mat and get into it. You'll lose weight LIKE THAT.

They even have a workout mode. o_O You enter in your body information, and it keeps track (sort of accurately, enough) on how many calories you've lost, etc. My sister was jumping all over the PS2 mat at a friend's house (family friend) and banging for two minutes. It said she lost 60 calories, LOL. Good for two minutes, I think with a running machine you get about 10 calories max. :p

I'm bad, too. XD I can do reasonably well...on the easy songs. When the arrows are going everywhere, I try to keep up and just start stomping.

There are people at the mall that don't even face the thing, they've MEMORIZED all the hardest songs. And then they get almost all "perfects". O_O They play forever, LOL. They're all leannnn

Oh! You know those subway ads, like "Jared lost 500 lbs." or whatever? They have DDR stories like that, too.

Haha, there are DEFINITELY people that like camp out there. They have like gallon jugs of water with them. It's like an addiction (sort of like mine to these boards.) Okay I'm done hijacking the thread.

Raftermania, what does it mean to be Tennis Canada's mascot, or is that just some kind of joke?

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

At the women's tier one tourney in Toronto they had a mascot roaming the grounds. His name was TeeCee, which stands for Tennis Canada. Clever, eh? Not a joke this time, I was the mascot for a few days in 2001.

Does TeeCee where an indentifying costume or tee shirt or something?

Thanks,

Gary

I didn't know, but the thought of you in that costume brought a smile to my face. Pretty cool/funny.

You guys make me laugh who the heck have you been playing in tennis i started talking a researching less and just going out and playing i have skated in the past played foot ball when i was younger as well as soccer but tennis is really extreme if you have real compition but problem is is you get so many guys who play recreationally that care more about points than playing go out there with a close friend who will give it some energy and dont ever stop running if the ball bounses twice hit it anyhow if it lands out of the court return it or atleast try too go have fun to many people get so carried away with points and winning that playing become pointless if you just go out and play give it your all it can be more extreme and have more running than soccer and football and basketball key is dont stop running when the balls stops just pick up the ball run back to base line and serve and keep playing and i would say that then tennis becomes extreme when you can carry a strong rally then play points
\

umm... no. no way tennis can be more extreme than soccer. soccer players run a lot more than tennis players do. i wouldnt even dare try to compare physical strengths between the two.

Actually tennis is not the best of sports for those who are just looking to lose some weight (reducing fat mass).

Our body only starts to consume fat as a way to provide energy to the the muscles after it has consumed all hydrocarbs and fosfat that muscles store.

This only starts happening after about 30 minutes of continuos exercise at about 60% of your full capacity. It is called the Aerobic System.

Tennis uses a lot of the 1st stage system (Aelactic Anaerobic), that works for about 10 sec at 90~100%. This short bursts do not consume fat.

So if you are aiming at reducing fat you should aim at some type of regular, long lasting exercise. Running is still probably the best one there is. Just remember that it is much better to run 1 hour at 7 miles/hour than running 15 minutes at 12. At least for this purpose.

Sure it'll help you lose weight. But I wouldn't say it's the most effective way of doing it. Disciplined cycling or jogging or some other aerobic activity would be best.

The thing is, those things are boring, so you can actually regret doing them. But if you like tennis, you'll look forward to your excersize.

That is one LONG sentence. Not even 1 comma eithor.

i played both soccer and tennis for high school. both teams made it to states regularly, and our soccer team were state champs one of my years. i'd have to say soccer is a lot more intense / tiring than tennis. i played midfield, and besides soccer matches, i'd be even more tired and sweaty after a regular soccer practice than after a typical tennis match.
