Is tennis overrated?

As most who come here, I am pretty fond of tennis. However, after reading some of the more recent material in here, I have been overcome by the creeping suspicion that the sport may in fact not be all that great. Truth be told, it seems that tennis as a whole is actually quite overrated; on first glance it may look like a very professional, international sport with lots of dedicated athletes, but when you look beyond the veneer, it's actually a bunch of dilettantes playing against half-baked rookies. Don't believe me? Consider the overwhelming evidence:

Chung is overhyped

Tiafoe is overrated

Kyrgios is hugely overrated, natch

Agassi too

Even Rocket Laver

Zverev is the most overrated of them all

Nadal is overrated off clay

Whereas Federer and Djokovic are overrated on clay

Daniel Day Lewis is way overrated

Thiem is, too

Nalbandian is another overrated dude

Don't think Murray gets away unscratched

Shapovalov's hype is out of proportion (says yours truly)

Delpo as well

Is Bouchard overrated, though?

Why, yes she definitely is

But no worries — so's Serena, never mind all those slams

It may be hard to believe now, but even Tomic was once overrated

Poor Ferrer, doesn't get much love — nice try, still overrated

Wawrinka is an overrated one-slam wonder

Don't even get me started on the rest of the NextGen™©. That would get ugly.

So there you have it. I'm taking up darts instead.

You forgot one crucial: ”Peak Safin is a myth and overrated”

And I don't like a thing about your mother
And I, I hate your daddy's guts too, boo-hoo
And I don't like a thing about your sister, no, no
Cause I, I, I think sex is overrated too

One of the strangest things about tennis is the fact that the commentators are coaches - Annacone, Davenport, Gimmelstob, Mouratoglou - that conflict of interest is so bizarre and strangely accepted by the sport. It affects the commentary even when other non coaches are commentating because their coworker’s star player is the subject of the match. It’s yucky. How many other sports do this? I don’t recall this happening in golf, and I used to watch the golf channel quite a bit. Anyone have other examples? I mean these coaches are full time staff commentators, not just one offs.

6-0 in the fifth, the greatest moral victory in British tennis.

That queens run in 1986 obviously boosted his confidence at Wimbledon that year.
Can you imagine what was going through Mats mind being behind in sets twice in the match to him? What made Castle who seemed to have a promising career ahead of him in 1986/1987/1988 fall off a cliff & become a television host?

Many of these thread creators here don’t seem to have any concept of what the word overrated actually means. Or at least they pretend not to just because overrated is generally considered a bit of a derogatory term.

It a term used by those who purport to be able to see into the future. When they're are right they are all " I told you so" when wrong no one cared for their opinion in the first place except other soothsayers

I agree about Federer, Nadl and others, but suresh is definitely not overrated.

I would (be)rate him a bit more though.

This thread is overrated. We shouldn't pay much attention to this thread and go merrily go about creating more "X is overrated" threads.

Please, oh please convince the masses that tennis is way, way, I mean way-ly over rated. Could mean more open courts.

However, that said, I truly enjoyed the point you made.

Aloha

God forbid one has an opinion that doesn't perfectly align with the mainstream media or TTW consensus.

Bunch of dinosaurs, they wouldn't make the cut in today's super duper powerful and athletic era of Kyrgios, Zverev and Chung.

Hmm, one of those guys in the grainy videos from the 1940's or whenever it was looks vaguely familiar. Can't quite put my finger on it.
