Is The Game Speeding Back Up?

there was talk of faster balls at AO this year. been reading about expanded grass swing this season...of course, these two items don't prove a trend, but i'd be interested to hear whether there is any other news of 'institutionalized speeding up' of the tour, generally?

i think the 6+ hour AO grinders, and ridiculous dominance of a few players, does justify speeding things up a bit. there is definitely more chatter these days about net play and aggressive tennis...

I am all for that. There is excitement when baseliners go against serve/volleyers. Game is interesting and allows for some incredible shot making / reflexes.

Now-a-days, I don't watch any match between Nadal,Djokovic or Murray as I will be bored to death.

ATP need new stars and the only way to make that happen quickly is to make the surface faster. They may consider that.

Once someone starts winning left and right, they slowed down the courts.

Now that another someone is threatening to win just as much, they upped the speeds of all courts again.

And so it goes...

One day, there shall be another someone who couldn't be bothered by court speeds so that they can tweak it as much as they want and it won't matter ! Hopefully, that guy is just around the corner.

Don't think it is speeding up and I'm sure the organizers will slow it down more to get their cash cows in the finals.

I hope you are correct. Yes, the 6+ hour grind fest have a few moments of brilliance but if tennis goes in this direction, the sport will lose viewers. Too many points were just grind and run until someone folds.

Also, last year's WTF was ridiculously slow for an indoor hard court tourney. And, Aussie Open was almost as slow as the French until this year. Even the USO has gotten slower since 2009. Wimbledon has slowed the most over the last 10 years but is still fast enough to give the attacking player a chance. Wimbledon is the only major that is sufficiently fast at the moment.

I agree we need to give attacking players a better chance to win to 1. shorten 5 set matches, 2. add drama and variety to matches instead of homogenous baseline bashing, and 3. influence younger players to develop complete games including approach shots, volleys, and overheads.
