With the rise of Rafael Jodar, only the second Spaniard born in the 2000s to reach the top 100, it got me wondering what happened to Spanish tennis and how its pipeline is doing compared to other countries. Incidentally, this week Martin Landaluce will join Jodar and Alcaraz in the top 100, so perhaps the spigot is finally open. Prospects Daniel Merida (live ranked 102) and Pablo Llamas Ruiz (live ranked 145) are close to making the jump, as well. The following list is every country that has had at least two top 100 players or at least one top 50 player.
Sorry this didn't come out as a table, it would have been slightly better on the eyes!
Nation T100 T50 T10
USA 11 6 1
ITA 8 5 2
FRA 7 3 0
ARG 7 3 0
CZE 4 3 0
ESP 3 2 1
GBR 2 2 1
CAN 2 2 1
BRA 2 1 0
CHN 2 1 0
BEL 2 0 0
AUS 2 0 0
DEN 1 1 1
KAZ 1 1 0
Eleven other nations have one single top 100 player, but no top 50 or better. For reference, they are Switzerland, Portugal, Peru, Paraguay, Finland, Taiwan, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, Japan, and the Netherlands. There are zero Russians or Germans, another strange anomaly!!
Edit: This is not the current rankings, but rather the peak rankings. So if someone has reached the top 10, such as Holger Rune and Jack Draper, they are counted as top 10. There are players that had a cup of coffee in the top 100 who are no longer there.
