Is the Tennis Channel losing money?

I'm pretty happy with Tennis Channel. I have them with a "medium" cable package but I thought TC should be on basic cable now, according to the deal they made.

Right now is probably the most difficult time for a network to try to cover the matches live, with several smaller tourneys going on literally at the ends of the earth.

Last year when Tennis Channel went dark for a few months, now that was bad. The big nets cover little and often on delay.

As for the announcers, I am relatively happy with TC's team. They don't jabber nonstop as much as the major net announcers. Justin G, not sure why he rubs some people the wrong way, he was a high ranked player not that long ago and he sees some very interesting stuff. Destination Tennis, well somebody's gotta pay bills.

**************Highest ranking No. 63 (April 19, 1999)***************

Closest he every came to a grand slam is 3rd round!
Won 13 tournaments - Challenger level!

Donald Young was ranked higher then Justin!

If I could buy just a monitor feed like at the live tournaments with no "commentator" I would gladly play for it per event!

That one of the main reason I go to the live tournaments is to avoid the constant chatter during the points.

I do like to set in a bar and watch the action through the monitors too.

Hopefully, TC will get rid of all their commentators and just air the match!

I've said this before and I agree with you. I cannot stand the silly and biased commentary that gets blabbed over every single match. I would gladly pay extra for the joy of watchng the matches without the neverending commentary.

They fired her? I thought she left for a better gig. She's on First Take on ESPN2 - even with Stephen A Smith and Skip Bayless, on their worst ratings day she's probably seen by 10x the number of people who saw her on TC.

I thought she seemed familiar! When she started moderating FT I was like "She seems familiar, where do I know her from....."

Meanwhile, when Id watch TTC's court report Id be like "what happened to the pretty black lady?"

ROFL. Color me silly for not putting it together sooner. Good for her, and now I am an even bigger fan.

You can get a subscription to tennis.tv

They show the official ATP feed which features Robbie Koening and Doug Goodall.. Two guys who know when to shut up and when to commentate.

TTC needs to also cover the big College and Junior Events. There is a market for this crowd, believe or not.

Great point. As others have said, TTC does not need to cater to other crowds. This is a tennis crowd. The fact that they don't broadcast any challengers, juniors or college tennis is weird as it would likely be much cheaper.

In America college basketball is more popular than the NBA, and college football is probably the 3rd or 4th biggest sport here.

That's funny that a channel that is dedicated to just providing one thing can't even provide it. That's almost like opening up a seafood restaurant but not having shrimp on any of the dishes. Those tournaments should all be broadcasted live. They don't need to prioritize like ESPN does where other sports are coming in at the same time or they need to spread the broadcasts with their full range of viewers who aren't just "tennis" crowd. When you subscribe to TTC, you are there for a reason and they should broadcast everything they can, they only have that one sport to focus on and they know their audience and what they tune in for, regardless if it's a high or low profile event, it should be made available to all of its viewers. Maybe they started to go down ever since they hired Justin Gimelstob and the Jensen brothers.

Finally someone gets where I'm coming from....I'm not complaining about TTC, just confused.

They aired about 50% of the Hopman Cup matches--but none of it live! While Hopman Cup was live? They were airing another tournament on delay. I get that they can't afford every tournament especially when 3 or more are going on at once, but last week it seemed like they were going out of there way to not broadcast live tennis other than Doha.

Exactly. I wonder how much money TC wastes on these two worthless shows that could be going toward broadcasting live tennis? If they can force Danielle whatsherface's "Fit Ta Hit N' 60" on us, and Mayleen Ramey's silly travel show on us, they can surely invest in more live tennis and commentating that does NOT include the likes of Justin Gimelmakeitstop.

Guys, there are a lot of people that rather prefer variety over just tennis. I happen to learn quite a bit from Billy Bob's home wrecker and Mayleen, although Danielle isn't very good, admittedly.

I am a Tennis channel addict 24/7.

My dream is to travel with the lovely Mayleen Ramey around the world to different Tennis resorts like on Destination Tennis! I don't care about the resorts I just like to see her dress up in different outfits.

I already bought ten bottles of Fructis shampoo. I'm not sure why.

I love the obscure tourneys they put on the tube. The more players I never heard of the better.

Tennis channles Robbie Koenig cracks the best lines of any tennis commentator. For example "God was a boy..."

Love it.

well I think we've about summed it up then. TC should broadcast every event live in order to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy by March of 2013. I've also learned that apparently I buy my TVs from alternate vendors as if I want to mute a particular commentary team I can just hit that weird little mute button and I didn't even have to pay extra for it. Crazy this modern technology.

major props to TC for adding coverage of Chile today(to show Nadal)

You almost never see other sports channels adding coverage of an event at the last minute like that(that's usually determined many months in advance, as has been stated showing live tv is a complicated affair)

of course that probably won't stop the *****ing around here...

2005(the year I got TC) was the first year I ever saw live coverage of non American Masters Series events (watching that entire Nadal-Coria final live was surreal, after 20 years of just seeing Rome edited or on tape delay. or just reading about it in the paper)
And it was the first year I saw non American Davis Cup ties. that alone made it worth the extra cash to me. And it would still be worth it today if that's all they had(but they now have so much more)

Frankly I don't believe anyone complaining about TC could have been following tennis that long. The prescence of tennis on tv prior to TC was extremely limited.

I got TTC in 2005 as well, ordered it in the 5th set of Nadal vs Coria at Rome or Monte Carlo.

I'm stoked they added Vina del Mar as well and it is a fairly unprecedented move. I can't clarify any more than I am not trying to complain about TTC. As a die hard tennis fan, I am just wishing the channel would grow instead of plateau and slightly diminish.
