Is there a certain point when you should split-step?

I was just thinking about it and I was wondering if there is a certain point you should split-step and also wanted to know at which point do you guys split-step? I normally split-step when I feel it is the right time (which is usually as the opponent strikes the ball)

You split step as your opponent begins their forward swing. Your first foot should land a teeny tiny miniscule moment after the ball comes off the racquet.

Like mordecai, I usually initiate my split step at the start of the forward swing (or upward swing for a serve). I land 2-footed (more often than 1-footed) as the ball is leaving the opponent's strings. Some pros will sometimes execute their split step a fraction of a second later than this. If you execute the step a bit on the later side, you will probably land it 1-footed more than often than the slightly earlier 2-footed landing.

I do it right after my opponent makes contact with the ball. It gives you sometime to look the face of the racket.
