the german empire is upset that it never reached the heights of the british empire, so it takes revenge slowly and quietly

Djokovic lost the final to Haas in 2009, Murray is British so he will prefer queens anyway.

Haas followed up that title with a good run and beat Novak on the way to the Wimbledon semis - he had a really good stretch through the mid part of 2009
Nadal played Halle in 2012 (lost to Kohlschreiber) and 2014 (lost to Brown)

Everyone knows that Roger is curse-proof as he transcends tennis.

LMAO

The message doesn't come across as strong if you include Fed though. He did lose in Wimbledon R2 after winning Halle in 2013, but other than that it's been robust - he won the Halle-Wimbledon double on 5 occasions (2003-06, 2017), made the Wimbledon final on 4 other occasions (2008, 2014-15, 2019)

Other than the guy that got tired of winning both events in the same year lol.

But yeah, since 2011 there's a shocking amount of R1 for an event that's the 3rd most important on the surface.

Gosh, only Haas and Berdych went on to go deep in Wimbledon from that list!

To date, Federer is the only player to be able to handle both tournaments. He completed the Halle-Wimbledon double on 5 occasions (2003-6,2017).

I wouldn't say there is a curse, I'd just say the conditions of Halle are absolutely nothing like the conditions of Wimbledon, and the fact Federer did so well at both is the major reason he has a claim to true grass greatness.

I think the conditions in Halle are a bit quicker and the courts are more slick. He struggled in some matches even in his best years against the big servers - in 2006 I remember him dropping sets everywhere and having to save MPs
But then promptly destroyed everyone at Wimbledon

It was a shame that Kiefer couldn’t beat Kafelnikov in the 2002 final (who he had beaten quite a few times in the past including in their most recent match 1-2 months earlier) after taking the 1st set, following his wins against both Sampras and Federer en-route.

Agreed. Halle is definitely the closest that we have left on tour to what Wimbledon, and most of the old grass courts outside of Australia, used to be like. The margins are much smaller, and matches tended to be decided by a handful of points. It's a major reason you see so few repeat champions, and when you do... You know to appreciate them.

There’s no curse, just hating on the tournament simply because Federer played there. Federer never commented on going from Halle to Wimbledon. So it’s not the grass, it’s the player. Winning either tournament propels a player to Wimbledon champion and neither Halle or Queens will be a 1000.

Do you remember Federer saying anything about why he chose Halle over Queens?

I know he had a formal agreement in place to play always Halle, but I would be interested to know what motivated that decision if there was anything substantial to it, like preferring the tournament setting, conditions etc etc.

Federer’s involvement in Halle makes this null and void because of his prowess on grass, but I always thought Queens generally had a deeper draw. Would you agree with that?

Federer did say why he played there. He said Halle was like family and he is German speaking Swiss.

Playing Halle didn’t prevent him from winning Wimbledon.
