Is there a way to make hitting against the wall fun?

Standaa

G.O.A.T.
Lots of the time during summer, when I’m back in my hometown, it’s often hard to find people to play with. So occasionally, when I REALLY want to hit, I go and play against the wall. But I get bored of it after 10 minutes.

Are there any fun games or just anything you can do to make hitting against the wall more fun/challenging?

I don't have a wall to play with but I imagine if I had access to one, I'd have fun if I went in there with a particular goal in mind rather than to just hit some balls

IF you're good, it's just plain FUN to blast groundies for 5 minutes straight without missing.

So, keep hitting against the wall till you get good, and if you don't, then you need to learn
to accept your limitations, maybe find a sport you CAN get good at for a thrill.

There's no getting around that Tennis is a demanding sport, and costs more than most have
to offer, in regards to fitness, skill sets, athleticism, concentration.

And being able to hit against a wall well is a great test of those demands.

Just paint a square of the size you want and try to hit it, first only forehand, then only backhands, then one of each, try it with slices, one inside the square, one to the right, one to the left.

You have to have a goal and a mindset so your time on the wall is not just mindless bashing, if you set an objective it will be more demanding and fun to achieve, it will motivate you and it will be more rewarding.

That’s a good idea, thanks.

I've said that in evaluating junior players the most important thing is if they will hit against the wall for long periods of time on their own.
If they love to hit the ball, they have a real shot to get very good at tennis.

I've used wide painter's making tape to make squares on the wall as targets. That makes it more interesting to me and I can pull the targets off when I've finished.

This could be fun and help your hand eye coordination. Never miss another volley again! Cara Black almost got the career GS in ladies doubles but lost in the finals of the FO but she did get the career GS in mixed doubles though!!
Cara as a youngster hitting volleys against a wall. Amazing stuff!!

Yep. Get the most beautiful, desirable, and willing person to oh and ah, and feed you another ball if you miss the one you're using. That will help.

On a more serious note: Many walls are not properly tilted back. This constraints the rebounding ball angle and limits your distance from the wall. Both of these detract from the benefit. I know Björn Borg would, as a young teenager, practice touch shots against his garage door. Variety helps. If you're hitting while standing close to the wall, you'll end up changing your FG and BH strokes to accommodate the timing change, which isn't helpful.

You can work alot of shots on the wall. There was a drill a poster and coach here named BungalowBill who had a timed wall drill where the goal was to hit certain number of good backhands, forehands, alternate volleys and groundies. He has grade that he associated with each level of player. I did it some years ago, and took my consistency and return to another level, because you stood up close enough to where you need controlled strokes with a short backswing. Was like mini tennis on the wall, but more intense.

You can also video yourseIf. Might not make it fun, but it can make it interesting. I have a short vid I am thinking of putting up. It was a bad day stiff back (not recovered from jumping), but I took a few clips because I wanted to get some idea what I was doing with my racquet paths, and hear how it felt to me. Didn't help it was at the end of a 3 hour outing, and was annoyed with some of the shots I was hitting.

Things I like to do at the wall:
A. Tune my racquet and try to perfect the balance for optimum control.
B. Test out new weighting concepts.
C. Video record my strokes, play it back, try to fix my form and video it again.

lolololol man i'v got 2 hit 1200 fh/bh topspin every day n it's simply my addiction/craving.....lolololol, like drug addict i reckon. w/o it, feel like sleepy, blood not flowing, running nose etc n couldn't eat or sleep well......lucky addict to this instead of real drug, lolololol manohman.............

also w/ nice music n a bottle of 'sweat' drink i made for myself to replace old fluid.....feel sosososo good after n sleeping like a baby:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D.......................

I too hate the wall after ~ 10-15 minutes.

Much more enjoy self drop feeds on an actual court. Often go well over an hour doing that.

Think part of the appeal is that I can actually see where the damn ball is landing; can't do that rallying against a wall.

I think there is something satisfying about hitting the wall with enough targeting accuracy to have the ball repeatedly land in the perfect spot to hit the next ball without having to lose rhythm. It's kind of like when a boxer gets in rhythm against a punching bag.

sososo addictive once u got the kinetic flowing.......lololololol man.

w/ a bit hs math/physics, the by-product of my addiction i got:

tenniswisely, i'm quite happy to use some very very simple most of high school math/physics to work out a perfect fh/bh topspin 'simulator' for myself.......lololololol that ppl thought i'm playing 'tennis' actually nothing but addiction/craving, only fh/bh topspin n nothing else. now i can sense almost every baseline shot error >+- ~20cm ie still couldn't be sure if the ball landed in/out ~20cm from baseline. still need opponent's yelling:D:D:D:D:D:D:D....................

i'm surprised how effective the tennis verse 'hit enough balls' etcetc re. repetition a few days ago, starting counting the errors when i'm baseline rallying w/ young div1/a1 guys, 1:5 wowowow i thought i should play matches in remote future, as only fh/bh rallying surely far from enough:unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure:.............................

plenty to work on to get the whole package of 'competition kit':laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:..................

Sure! take a six pack of your favorite beer with you. Make up an important rule to follow: every 10 minutes, you gotta down one beer.

60 minutes will breeze by fast!

And IF you can hit well it'll be fun, IF you can't then it won't be.
I found this to be absolutely true. I would also add that if you have good DIRECTIONAL CONTROL of your strokes, it will be fun. If not, you will do more chasing after errant ball than hitting.

The more I have improved, the more I enjoy and appreciate the convenience, consistency and versatility of the wall as a hitting partner. The wall is always available. The wall never misses. The wall can work with you on nearly any stroke you want to drill.

I hit against walls for fun whne I can't find a partner. For me I just make it is fitness and footwork workout. I haven't found it consistent enough of a returned feed to work on technique and such. I use a ball machine for that.

Like anything, the more you practice, the better you get.

Try using a half-dead ball. It will slow things up a bit. Stand back about 6 or 8 feet from the wall and practice volleys to start off. Tape something to the wall as an aim point to help keep the ball under control.

Fo groundstrokes stand back just far enough for the ball to bounce twice. This will give you more time to set up. With practice, you can move up and start taking the ball on the rise.

True but I still need feedback on depth dimension.
The shots could be sailing way long. The wall will never tell you that.

lolololol man, my daily hitting partner for >3 yrs by now, except rainy days, has always been the world no.0:love::love::love::love:........ better than the world no.1 no matter who's dat. i'm sosososo luck to have a ~15-degree inclined wall only 2 min walking from home. it never misses no matter wat i throw to it. remember there's a ytb djoker said something like 'the wall's the best, trust me, it never misses' absolutely true. my 1's even better, lolololol w/ the perfect ~15-degree tilt/inclination to make the perfect 1/2 court 'simulator'. due to the softness of syn grass floor surface w/o sand rubbed in, every turn perfectly simulate some1 return a 'junk ball' which won't allow me to borrow any pace so i have 2 generate my own pace. w/ full legs drive n waist elastic coil/uncoil, just simply feel sosososo good............these just my addiction/fixation part. by convenience at the same time, hv bit concept of tennis court, 23.77 x 8.23 m & net ~1m n a bit very simple hs math/physics n bit easy uni statics for c.e.p, every shot could be precisely simulated the landing spots in a real tennis court.........halirious, manohman lolololol.............

btw i do hit w/ a lot ppl couple of time on wknd for range/angle, verification purpose only for me n warmup their games for their comp/tournaments or social or watever.......lolololol n non of them is as good as my world no.0 ofc:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D.......
it usually took me 5-6 hrs to get my dosage of 1200 hits while on the wall i could finish it <2 hrs easily w/ music.........can't play any1 w/ headphones for humanitarian reason......too much elbow/wrist pain for them already, lololololol manohmano_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O.....................

for a couple of decades by now the super powers have had no need to set off any nukes anymore as computer simulation can do dat perfectly..........lolololol, only little rocket man still stuck inside the bomb tunnels:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D...............

drawing a target on the wall is better >not drawing anything..........lololololol, but if u hit a flat shot>133km/h even cm over the net, still has the possibility of being long. not 2 mention dat we need a few feet clearance over the net so end up either u reduce the ball spd or, as all the pros do, heavy topspin. chk out the wall n the ball defection rate n where the ball landed u can work out where exactly the shot will land on the other 1/2 court behind the wall 'virtual 1/2 court' ofc....lolololol, man. only
tiny bit high schl math n impact/gravity/acceleration law required, hv fun:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:................aft worked out dis then verify/correct it in a real court, job done:love::love::love::love::love::love:...................

target shooting requires a bit c.e.p ie statistics bit uni math n not much at all, n trying to 'kill' ball tubes or drink bottles placed @ the 'virtual baseline' by the defected ball, extremely fun w/ the 'head shot' direct hit...........hilarious, manohman:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D...................
