Is there any harm in listening to my iPod while jogging?

I've always been told to focus on my exercise without any distractions such as music or watching TV. I'm getting awfully bored of jogging without my usual jogging buddy, so I thought I could listen to my iPod. Would listening to music really impact my performance in a negative way? I mean, I have a playlist of about 20 heavy metal/rock songs, so if anything I should be pumped up and energetic right?

What do you think?

Depends on where you jog. If you jog on the left-hand side of the road, it's be better while listening to the music as you could see vehicles coming. If you jog on the sidewalk, there's little that would make the ipod dangerous.

In the cycling community, solo-cycling with an ipod is generally frowned upon for safety reasons, but not everyone follows that.

yes, there is harm if your ipod is not a newer nano. if your ipod is not flash based but instead has a harddrive, you have a chance of permanently damaging your hardware because harddrives have moving parts. it'd be like shaking your laptop up and down vigorously.

You need a flash-based model as the above poster noted. However, any music device with earbuds/headphones is a potential source for hearing damage. Using one in a noisy environment is a recipe for hearing loss over time.

Yes....damage to your ears. Lots of data in the medical literature lately on hearing loss related to the use of both external and internal (ear canal) headsets. Ear didn't evolve to handle this sort of onslaught.

Even at reasonable volumes?

Oh, and, are death metal concerts out of the question too? ;) :D

Yes, even at reasonable levels, due to the proximity to the eardrum. OSHA reports that 80 decibels (the noise level of a busy restaurant) can do damage. Most studies show that longer exposure to lower levels can do damage comparable to shorter exposure at higher levels. A pediatric study showed hearing loss in 1 out of every 8 children, and serious hearing loss is now being seen in people in their 40s, something rarely seen years ago. The common factor is use of ipod headsets. And frequent attendance at rock concerts has been clearly shown to damage hearing.

If people around you can hear your music from your earphones, it's too loud for your ears and causing damage.

I've cut way back on using headphones, I could tell something was going on when I started getting headaches if I had the headphones on for more than an hour at a time. I use earpods even less than headphones.

****!!!

I have the "old" 30 GB video, so I guess I can't take it on runs anymore.

I felt very energetic through the entire hour that I was jogging, and it fact I sprinted home the last 20 minutes. But, I'm not in the condition to buy another iPod if this one breaks so I guess I'll have to start jogging solo again...

I primarily listen to my iPod on the treadmill at the gym. Sometimes I drop it but no harm. I heard about a kid who got hit by a car while skateboarding and later died. You should always be aware of your surroundings regardless of what you are doing.

I jog exactly how I drive. Always scanning from side to side and stuff...

Safety isn't an issue for me because I pay attention to where I'm headed and what's going on around me. I just don't wanna **** up my iPod.
