Current rankings say something else but level wise Thiem is the best player out there IMO. He defeated Nadal - Tsits - Djokovic in WTF which is very impressive. If he keeps this level it's only matter of time he will become #1 IMO.

What TT experts think about Thiem ? Is he good enough to be next #1 ? Is he at same level of Djokodal now or just better than both ? Vote in poll.

As I said during RG Thiem is definitely a top player now, and players are afraid of him. But better than the big 3? No, this is going a bit too far. He is still choking like crazy in matches against Djokovic. (though, ironically many times he still ended up winning the match). And his USO titles was really not impressive.

win tomorrow and i'll consider putting him at #1.

however every knee shall bend next season as a vengeful Djokovic returns as undisputed king and you all will be forced to acknowledge it. resistance is futile!

Let's see if he wins on Sunday. There's no excuse for him to lose to Nadal on a HC in an event historically unfavorable for Rafa. He should also defeat Med (just slice short and wait for Med to act the fool at net). Thiem's mental fragility was shored up quite a bit today by choking the second set, but coming back to win in three sets. A big deal for him and his confidence going forward in big matches. The problem is, he's already 27, all of these mental niggles should have been flushed out by the time he was 22 or 23.

I need to see him do it against Djokodal in slam finals. All very well to do it in best of 3 or take one of them down in semis and lose to the other in finals, but the truth is he probably wouldn't be a Grand Slam champion today if Nadal had bought a plane ticket to New York, and Djokovic hadn't tried to take some woman's throat out. If he loses every single slam final to them, he isn't at their level when it matters.

So right now, I have him below Djokodal, but it's close. He'll have the opportunity to prove me wrong in the upcoming slams.

The problem with Thiem is he plays worse than usual against big3 even if he managed to win many times. Today he played way worse than in first 2 matches

He's definitely the very best on Hard-courts when playing at top level.

On Clay that's reserved for Rafa and on Grass there are multiple players above him.

I think the following three things are true right now:

- Djokovic is the best at winning matches when his level is average
- Nadal is the best at consistently producing his above-average level
- Thiem has the best above-average level

Who has the best best level? Not sure right now. Maybe Medvedev, to be honest.

Nadal is everywhere. He forgot how to lose early years ago. He is also the owner of the most grand slam titles in history.

Peak level is probably highest, yes, but Medvedev is the one on a little win streak. Could end the season 10-0.

He lost to Schwartzman at RG.
This.

Today, if Nole hadn't stank the joint in the first set, he would have broken down Thiem's BH.

Thiem's engine is the key to beat him; his game starts to misfire all over the place as soon as his energy flounders. But you need to push him and then pounce on the occasion as it presents, or he escapes and then bodies you.

He's the Austrian Death Machine.

He is definitely the most in-form player right now. I really believe he could beat anyone in the world. He's playing with the kind of determination and self belief that he has never had before. Some of those backhand winners he was hitting especially in the third set tie break were something else. I think if the AO were to happen next week he would win, that how much confidence I have in his form at the moment. The only thing he needs to improve on is not getting tight when he needs to close out a match. if he could do that he would be unstoppable.

Djokovic messed up big time today. Let Thiem off the hook.

Seriously, Thiem losing FO this year in 5 sets to a great-playing Schwartz - after having just a few weeks to get accustomed to clay after a tiring USO...

... means what?

Squat.

In fact, I applaud him for almost reaching semis despite the circumstances.

I don't think he is, Medvedev will likely beat him tomorrow night. The thing is, his style matches up well against fellow baseliners like Nadovic, but put him up against a genuine fast-court expert, of which Medvedev is currently the best, and the difference shows.

The funny thing now is that there is no best player on tour. That makes tennis exciting to watch again. I would say Thiem and Medvedev, and the usual big3 suspects are the best now with no clear advantage to any.

If there had been a normal clay season and he had been given proper recovery time Thiem would've 100% made it to the semis, no question about it. It probably wouldn't have even gone to five sets if he hadn't been so gassed going into it.

I bet Novak wishes this was actually a fast court. He's been having trouble getting the ball past solid-to-good defenders on slower hard courts. At the moment he seems to lack the confidence to hit with depth down the line, too. Especially on his forehand.
