I am wondering if emails I get from "African Bankers" are legal. When I go into my spam mail, I'll get a letter and it basically says:
hello I am mr so and so, I am an African banker and so and so member died with x amount of cash in his acount and if you give me your info I'll transfer it to your american bank acount and you will recieve y% of the fortune.

So does anyone know if these email are legal and should I report them? Thanks.

I would advise that you delete that message, unless of course you already sent your personal info to your long lost nigerian brother who hit it big with blood diamonds....

It's a phishing trick, so you better don't reply to these emails. The best advice is to delete them immediately.

Yes, this is perfectly legit, I received an similar email three weeks ago. I gave them my info and everything, and within a week later I got my share of the bargain..A quick and easy way to make some money.:)

That's really not even funny to joke about. People around the world have been scammed out of their life savings, have ended up on the street, etc.

Easy solution: just delete the e-mail. I have a simple e-mail policy: if I know the person, I'll read it. If not, I delete it. Or if it's supposedly from someone I know, but with an odd or absent subject line, I delete it.

sounds like a good deal :p

The stories they come up with are pretty interesting. I always delete them. I remember watching a show on tv and some guy went to some country and found the spamers. It was that guy that hosts to catch a predator I think

There's an old expression, "You can't cheat an honest man". These people wouldn't have lost their life savings unless they were greedy, and they wanted something for nothing.

Since the emails come from overseas, I don't know who would have jurisdiction. Maybe you could tell it to the U.N., but I doubt if this would be a high priority for them.

Hey Larry,

Say hi to Herman and Lilly for me. I would imagine that Eddy has a place of his own by now, and Marilyn is probably married off.

That kind of e-mail has been common for 15 years or so. You can usually pick them out by the second line. Best to just delete and not give it another thought, 'cause apparently it's not going to stop.

Where to report abusive junk mail

to who and what does whoever you report it to send you or say to it?

The standard advice is to forward such abusive junk mail to the “Abuse” department of your particular email provider. Examples:

If your email is provided by yahoo: abuse@yahoo.com
If your email is provided by gmail: abuse@gmail.com
If your email is provided by hotmail: abuse@hotmail.com
If your email is provided by aol: abuse@aol.com

… and so on.

No need to give an explanation; they'll know how to protect you from further intrusions from that particular junk address.

If you are in the mood and brave you can become a "scam baiter" and make them do stuff:

Be sure to follow the tips for newbies :)

Check out "Completed Scambaits". It's a riot! As is the "MUGU museum"

I reply to a few and told them I have millions to give away too. I don't need any Bank Information. Just need a lots of trucks or buses to load.

You know what, when the son of the deposed king of Nigeria emails you directly, asking for help, you help! His father ran the freaking country! Ok?

(thanks michael scott)
