Is this the beginning of the long-awaited power shift?

We’ve been waiting for a while. With Djokovic out, and his mental state seemingly tattered, is this the beginning of the end of the Big 3? Federer is too old, Nadal isn’t good off clay anymore, and it’s a 50/50 whether Novak can recover from this. I think this is Medvedev and Thiem’s real opportunity to take over.

I hope so.
This whole Big 3 thing is blowing up in the ATP's face.
It would actually benefit them for the Big 3 to go away quietly, anoint Fed as GOAT, and move on.

We have calls of the Diamond Era being upon us where a superior, new and fresh wave of talent won't just usurp the Big Three but also produce a higher level of tennis and evolve the game beyond what the Big Three are/were capable of. This is the @Meles manifesto. But will it come to pass?

It's up to the Next Gen and Thiem to prove that this title will not be a fluke for whoever wins it and will use this as a stepping stone for future slams even against the Big 3.

My money is on this just being a fluke and come 2021, these guys will be relegated to second fiddle again.

It definitely can’t be written off the confidence this event might give to whoever ends up winning. If any of Thiem, Med, or Zed wins, it might be what they need to start consistently excelling at the majors. That said, I don’t think the Big 3 (or the Big 2 now, I suppose) will simply go away. I just hope we don’t get 2+ more years of Djokodal domination after this or it really will seem like a non-slam.

Hope it is, but I doubt it. If Federer is the barometer then Nadal and Djokovic will at least be competitive until about 38 years old. This seems like a knee jerk reaction to me. It might be the beginning of some sort of shift like Djoker not being a huge favourite in every non clay major, but I wouldn't write any eulogies for him or Nadal yet. Not for another 2-3 years at least.

It got to boring with the three old guys winning every major. Personally I think this is the start of a big power change.

Next gen will get some big wins but collectively still probably won't overhaul the Big Three until two of them drop out as serious contenders. When they're at their best, the suffocating blanket at the top of the game is 3 players deep, so all 3 have to F it up for one of these less talented players to win. If that becomes 2 then cracks appear and they can take some opportunities. If it's just 1, then the field should overcome that 1 for the majority of Major wins. But for the forseeable future I don't see it being any less than 2.

Its a beginning, but it will take some time until the old guys are down and out. Remember that nadal, federer and wawrinka did not play here, novak level wise is not done and who knows maybe murray will eventually return to a good level. This tournament will give the experience and and belief the younger players lacked before and maybe next year they will win more slams(lets not kid ourselves, unless nadal doesn't get defaulted, injured or sick he is not losing in the FO, if it takes place at all).

Its more about Big3 declining than young guys stepping up, so i wouldnt call it a power shift. Injury or DQ was pretty much the only thing stopping Djokovic from winning this.

Took a break from this place for few months. And this place hasn't changed a bit..

Posting reading too much into some incidents and extrapolating it.

On the thread, no this is not power shift. We get a new winner, thats it
