Would someone please start one of those witty headline threads about Danielle Collins already. It’s time.

I first saw her a few years ago at the USO collegiate thingamajig they have second week USO for college kids and I thought she’s just as good as the players in the junior tournament why is she playing college ball. Well she wanted to get edumacated so good for her. She can play too. Legit pro career in her future.

Like the ones you sometimes find left in the rear seat pocket on connecting flights :D

I'll openly admit to reading a few pages of those things on occasion. Flights are boring.
 
I saw her put on a little run about a year ago. She looked really tough, as I recall, then she kinda disappeared until recently. She seems to be pretty physically tough, I think she has a bright future.

Especially on connecting flights.

I’m confident there’s some cosmic explanation for this we’re missing.

Scientists should just give up on dark this and dark that and set their minds to more pressing matters.
 
She just made it to the quarters and not one single headline with her name in it on espn or TC .... It is like she is the only american that we are going to ignore ... why, because she doesn't have a sponsoring brand?

She's actually pretty cute. A cute WTA player? Am I dreaming? How often does that happen? ;) She has that all American apple pie look. A sponsor's dream if she can continue with her results.

More importantly, I'm just reading that Collins is college educated. A cute, college-educated pro player? Refreshing.

But now that you mention it, no, I don't think Johnson is cute. Collins has a sponsor's dream type of looks and could do well in the US if she can continue her winning ways.
 
I'd like to be a fan but in good conscience I cannot root for someone who didn't even know how to put on an overgrip until they turned pro :(

Talk about a coddled life.
 
First, am glad that someone started a thread on Danielle Collins's amazing recent results. She was ranked 117 going in to Indian Wells and made the 4th round, beating Madison Keys on the way. Semis in Miami taking out Coco, Vekic, Puig, Venus after qualifying. She is strong mentally and physically and clearly thinks her way around the court.

Collins can go far and it is because of hard work and intelligence, not being coddled. Read up on her, her father is a landscaper and mom a preschool teacher. She learned on public courts and idolized Venus for similar backgrounds. She had the chance to be first to graduate from college and took ot, winning 2 NCAA singles titles, super rare!

Yes, they take care of your equipment when you play good college tennis, for all players, and she was talking about the transition to being all on your own as a pro. The transition is tough and Stevie Johnson went through a lot early on as a pro, too, almost quitting. Am sure we are all glad he stuck it out and I for one am thrilled to see a mentally strong fighter out there on tour in Danielle.

Rooting strongly for her to continue growing and doing well! Awesome run in Miami!
 
It’s interesting that she finds it more freeing that she doesn’t have to do this for a living. When I was playing a competitve sport, I found it negatively affected my motivation/hunger because I didn’t need to win in order to eat. Playing against people who need to win to eat is tough - they are scrappy. Different perspectives I guess.
 
As always, time will tell. She has shown she has the tenacity to play up in many difficult situation, and one of the few that has been able to take that calm college play when everything is rambunctious around you and translate it into playing tougher in difficult situations. She lost that against Ostepanko, but Oste was also banging lines and hot shots, so a bit of give and take there. I'll jump on the train next years, but I like her. Not the academy molded player we see so much of lately. Also have known her coach since his time at Pdine, and he is a solid anchor on the team.

Great point, Federer' s kids would have totally starved were it not for that 20th major!
 
I watched her Tennis Channel desk interviews. She tries hard to keep up the image of being slightly obnoxious, as if it is expected of her. But she doesn't have the natural obnoxiousness a Kyrgios or a McEnroe, so it becomes a show.

Her face looks older than she is. this is really true; however, her body looks seriously sexy even for women standards (not for female pro tennis player standards lol). To me she's the sexiest female tennis pro player by miles, with no other WTA girl being anywhere near in sight.

I agree. She's sexy in a mature, refined way.

Not impossible, but there are girls which tennis has a better margin of error. Which usually translates to consistency.
From a technical standpoint you can't compare Osaka or Andreescu FH with Collins. First two have a superior FH technique.
