It makes me sad to realize that Federer has as many Grand Slam SF/F's in 5 Sets as Borg/Sampras/Nadal/Djokovic combined

Yeah, we get it. Fed just isn't that good and never really was.

Never mind that Borg only played in 28 Slams. lol

That could be a good or bad thing
We need to know, the total number of 5 set matches played by each and the number of wins and the number of losses. It could mean he’s weak in big moments, or it could mean that he rarely goes down easily, or a bit of both. For instance he stretched Djokovic to MP down in 2011 at the US and lost, which could be viewed as a bad thing. Except Nadal got decisively routed in 4 and that’s obviously not a better thing

How many SF/F has Federer won in 5 sets?

First, Federer faced much better competition than Borg and Sampras. Secondly, Djokovic skewed the data for Fed, going 4-0 against him. Whereas Fed and Rafa tied at 2-2.

Thirdly, limiting to SF/F is arbitrary. Within the last 4 years, Nadal lost 3 five-setters at QF or earlier: '17 Wim, '18 AO and '21 AO. Whereas Fed lost only one such match, '18 Wim.

Finally, Federer is unlikely to add to list. If he reaches slam SF/F at all, it's unlikely to take as long as 5 sets to beat him anymore.

Federer is more prone to doubting himself than other greats, I think. That's essentially what his mental weakness is.
We know Roger is perfectly capable of playing crucial under-pressure points and games with ice in veins, just as well as Borg, Sampras, Djokovic, or Nadal. The big problem is that often when Federer is facing a strong opponent and he's not in control (not to be confused with losing)- or unexpectedly loses control (USO 2011 pain), he suddenly starts doubting himself. It's not just in 5 set losses, but those demonstrate this issue the best. You can literally see a sudden change in Federer, him getting noticeably nervous (touching his hair/headband a lot, nodding after winning points, his movements and expressions become very tense as opposed to focused).

Other greats don't seem to doubt their ability as much. When they do, they are usually able to overcome this fairly quickly. But Federer gets stuck in the self-doubt limbo.
