It's exciting that this event will be held with 229 guys starting in the PreQs from 67 different schools with 25 of out the 30 D1 conferences represented. In the preQ, 60% of the players and schools are midmajors with the remaining 40% lower line or bench players from P5 schools and a couple Ivys. The top guys in the Prequalis are UTR 13.0-one of the top preQ seeds is Brian Shi of Harvard-in 2018 he made it to the QFs of several Futures-even beat Skander of Wake.

The greatest thing about preQualis is that most years 1-2 guys win 8 matches to reach the main draw. It takes 4 wins to get in Qualis and another 4 into MD. One year a guy won 10 matches to make it into the R16 of MD. Sometimes it is a JUCO or D2 transfer that goes from preQ to MD. You have to appreciate the 40 coaches of those MM teams digging deep to fly players to Tulsa to give them a shot to play players from regions they would never normally play and then have that 12% chance to get in Qualis and that 1% chance to get in MD. It is also a chance for those P5 benchwarmers to show that maybe they deserve to be in the lineup if they can make it to Qualis and win a couple matches there too. In the PreQs there are guys from the lineup of the mid to lower tier P5s-the teams usually ranked 30ish to 50ish. Opportunity for all to shine. Now there are MM players starting in Qualis too, but most start in PreQ.

Some matches will be livestreamed-I dont know if they will livestream PreQs or wait until Qualis. I think the top 10 newcomers get to play in Qualis so that's a chance for fans to watch the best of the new guys. I just hope everyone has a positive attitude and and negative COVID tests-I believe there is required PCR testing for unvaxxed players prior to the start of each draws and then unvaxxed players who move from pre Q to Q or Q to MD have to take a rapid antigen test. Colleges have to provide the initial test but the tests between draws will be covered by host site Tulsa. The men and women are in different cities this year.

Speaking of testing, USTA Futures for this fall (after Lubbock) appear to require PCR testing for vaxxed and unvaxxed players. Assuming players' insurance wont pay for weekly tests, that could be a $100-$200 hit each week just for the player and double if he travels with a coach. Hopefully collegiate players can get a free test on campus before they leave. Few players are playing the Naples and Ithaca Futures the week of All Americans-the only ITA ranked players I saw on entry list were Boitan (Ithaca) and Draxl and Vale for Naples. It figures that USTA would schedule 2 Futures the week of All American...when most fall weeks without major ITA tourneys only have one US Future. There are a few other college players on the Quali lists of those-Drew Baird, Tristan McCormick, a recent grad transfer to Georgia, Jake Van Emburgh, recent grad transfer to Ohio State, a Western Mich player, etc. For the Futures starting 10/4, players will have a quali draw of 32 so only have to win 2 matches vs 3 to get in MD. Naples 10/11 is a 64 Quali draw.

In the past, they usually haven't started the live stream til the main draw starts. I am hoping they would stream the qualies as well this year

They may at the Case Center, but they usually have two sites and the other one isn’t set up for live-streaming

Will they cover multiple tests in a short amount of time or only tests due to symptoms, exposure, contact tracing etc? Colleges had to pay for random surveillance testing last year for college students-that was not charged against students' insurance. (Of course colleges later could use their CAREs fund to reimburse themselves for testing costs). Insurance might deny claims if they see weekly testing for Futures players...It would be great if those players didnt have to pay-they are on a shoestring budget as it is. They wouldnt pay upfront but they could be charged back for them.

I don't know of any restrictions.

In the college example, when you force people to take the tests, that might create an exception. Not sure how it would play out for Futures entrants who would also be forced to take the tests.

These types of PPS's defs usually have a good back story. I'm sure Feddie was watching the Livestream and will have a full and unbiased report.

i think my favorite college match retirement / default that I’ve seen live (in person or stream, stream in this case) is Shabaz walking off court vs Steve Johnson because he was fed up w umpire decisions he thought weren’t going his way, while Boland was screaming from the area overlooking the courts ‘no! Michael, no!’

That one may be at the top of the HoF for crazy defaults. My son was playing in the juniors at the time and following that tournament. From a tennis parents standpoint its kind of a nightmare. Can only imagine the post match and travel home atmosphere among UVA players and staff.

(thinking to myself): man, it’s fun to see UF mens’s tennis players actually do amazing things all the damn time, rather than pretending they will like a certain Stanford fan around these parts

why did all the Stanford guys get knocked out of singles so early?
They were rusty. They didn't get enough practice on these courts. Don't worry though, still in doubles and when the season starts they will be ready and domination will begin

That’s good I was worried they were still bad / irrelevant anywhere east of Ojai

Looks like Shelton may have a very good match up against San Diego's Augie Holmgren. Captain obvious post of the day, these two will likely be the best two in college tennis throughout 2021-22.

and it remains to be determined where Shelton will play in the UF lineup this year - I still think Vale and Riffice play the majority of the season at 1-2 again, and deservedly so with their combination of accomplishments and seniority - hard to see an NCAA singles champion playing below 2

it’s likely UF has three of the top 10 singles guys this season (even if their rankings may not reflect that, since whoever plays 3-4 won’t have the same opportunities for big wins to impress the computer over the course of the year)

Shelton, one day after his 19th birthday, wins the ITA A-A 3&4 over Holmgren - really just routined his opponents all week, only seemed to be tested in the 6&5 victory over OSU's JJ Tracy

team title without dropping a singles point, NCAA singles title, ITA A-A singles title

Feddie, it's hard to keep track of all this winning, could you start up a spreadsheet for this new era of UF men's tennis dominance? is this what it was like to be a Stanford fan back in the day when the Model T Fords were coming out?

Not all top players are present at this tournament, so the two finalists are certainly not likely to be the best two in college tennis. Also, over the years I have seen many players get hot in a fall tournament and get a very high ITA computer ranking as a result, and then lose in the spring to some of the same players they beat in the fall. Who knows?

your first point is well taken - UF's top two singles players didn't compete in this tournament

but I don't know about the second point (saying 'who knows?' re: trajectory)- Shelton has been hot for about a year now, I'd say more of a reflection of a teenager becoming one of the best young American tennis players (in college or otherwise) than a temporary hot streak - I think anyone who doesn't think Shelton is a top 10 college player, now and continuing for however long he decides to stay in college, is kidding themselves

Taking into consideration both Shelton and Holmgren's results this summer leading up to the ITA's then them both making the finals is where I come up with my guess they will be the top 2 players this year. Could they be only top 10 or so? Sure. But they are likely top 5 pretty easy. The toughest part for Holmgren may be getting enough Power5 matches between now and the NCAA's to get and keep his ranking that high.

From your earlier post, I could see Shelton starting #3 the start of the dual season, then moving up during the course of the season.

It will be fun to watch UF this year for sure.

I just looked up Shelton on the UTR site and he has the highest UTR rating in college tennis at 14.41. UTR rankings aren't perfect but they are pretty good. Then I looked at his results this summer and I see why. When he has lost it has been to guys like Kozlov, Svajda, etc who are typically competing in challenger events and will be in the ATP main events soon. He has beaten a lot of really good players including Michael Mmoh who is top 200 in the world. Very impressive results.
