The kickoff weekend is going on and surprised there was no mention.

Looks like TCU got upset by Utah State. Norrie sat out and lost 4-3.

Stanford will comeback strong next year. but Northwestern has a very good team and will perform well in Indoor team championships in Febuary.

Saw some of the matches this weekend. OSU men and women were played tough at the top of their lineups by both Alabama and ODU. Also, Georgia State as a mid-major appears to be a team ready to upset a few opponents this year. Still think Wake and Virginia are the top teams to beat

Big matches for GA State this weekend: Friday vs GA Tech (wish it wasnt at 5pm), Sat vs N Florida, and Sunday vs South Carolina. Too bad the ITA will only rank top 50 teams when computer rankings come out. Last year there were 3 ranked D1 teams in GA as GA State was 50s to 60s.
Of interest to players who follow all levels of GA college tennis, former GGC player Lachlan McPhee is now at Vanderbilt and got to play at the KOW vs NC. While Vanderbilt lost 0-4, McPhee split with Kelly but did not get to finish. Lachlan won the B draw at Southern Intercollegiate in 2015 so in spite of being in NAIA he has some experience playing SEC/ACC guys. He played 3 at GGC behind Kevin Konfederak and Jordan Cox who are still at GGC. Another interesting note Sam Serrano who won the clinch point for Utah State vs TCU used to train in Atlanta area pre college with a group of South American guys who came up for a few months to train, play Atlanta and SC ITFs, and look at US colleges. Never a shortage of tennis or players to watch in Atlanta.

Whoa, interesting to know. NAIA schools are interesting to look at because there are some really strong players hidden by the weeds. Not sure how GGC does it but somehow they have built a nice little program there.

Since its been awhile since I have lived in Atlanta this might be a dumb question, but is GGC made up of what was formally Dekalb Junior College?

Georgia Gwinnett College was founded as a 4 year college a little more than a decade ago http://www.ggc.edu/about-ggc/at-a-glance/history/ A lot of GA colleges are consolidating, e.g. Perimeter/GA State a few years ago and the upcoming Armstrong State/GA Southern merge, but Gwinnett is populous county in metro Atlanta, and it did not have a 4 year college, so the state approved it as a start -from-scratch college in the early 2000s. GGC only fields 6 sports teams: men's and women's soccer and tennis with baseball for the guys and softball for the girls. There's not much to the campus but the tennis facilities are nice with both clay and hard; GGC bought a local club and refinished the courts. There is not much to do in Lawrenceville, but it's a quick drive on nearby 85 to Atlanta. The GGC tennis program seemed to have plenty of $ the first few years and winning national tennis championships in a row probably helped. However, the team held at least one fundraiser last year to help with travel expenses so the $ flow must have been reduced.

There was an article in the ajc.com May 2016 about a ruling that the max amount athletic programs at Georgia state colleges and universities could be funded by student fees was 65-85% depending on schools with the bigger schools at 65%-6 GA schools were over and have 4 years to reduce costs (Armstrong State was one of those). For all GA public colleges and universities athletic expenses were limited to growing 5% a year. http://www.myajc.com/news/local-edu...ing-athletic-programs/dDOOVuLdOVWwxI5b1B5xUJ/ d %. Of course UGA and GA Tech have no worries-their football teams make $ and maybe basketball too. Georgia State Athletics has big plans for the former Turner Stadium-I guess a lot of that will need private funding. GA State tennis is doing great but they play a lot of their matches at Piedmont Park, a city facility and they have no indoor courts like GA Tech or Emory.

Here is a link to winners:

    http://www.itatennis.com/events/kick-offweekend.htm

Not surprising, most of the host teams won. Baylor advanced from a 4 seed. TCU getting upset by Utah State was probably the biggest surprise. Texas Tech finished 4th at their own site. I guess the Big XII was the only conference to really have many surprises. Miss State had a great showing in advancing. Utah State was definitely the Cinderella story.

Ah yes, I remember when Ga St played at Bitsy Grant! And, very few indoor facilities left in Atlanta, I used to play at AHRC, I think its a church now. And Oglethorpe has improved their facilities I understand

I just looked up Dekalb, it consolidated in with the GA State/Perimeter College....Interesting how that has all merged. I need to check it all out next time I am around

    Really a conspiracy cry?

It's a small draw and inevidably this can happen...

    North Carolina v Ga
    OSU v OK
    TX v FL

All would've been great first day duels as well if it was a year, two or theee ago

North Carolina is the defending champ

How about any ACC peeps up in arms?

Now if Stanford was involved..... ;)

If USC and UCLA was in the opposite ends of the draw then it would be Pac 12 final ....... that is what they are afraid of and trying to prevent happen. and of course,, if Cardinal was in it, then it would be easy victory over all of them.....they were robbed this year...

I watched Wake Forest beat a VERY good Oklahoma State team Sunday! They are loaded and if they win the doubles point will be tough to beat!

If my Gators make it past Texas (big "if"), I know I don't want them to play Wake Forest. That's a strong team with a bullet.

Tough to see UNC emulate last years's showing but at least they only have one Pac 12 team in their path.

Incredibly deep field, especially 1-12, and probably shouldn't discount Baylor, Oklahoma, or even Miss St. UVA and Ohio St are the top 2 teams in the country right now in my opinion with Wake right there and then I think there is a little drop off. Tough, tough first round for the defending champs as the 5 seed. UGA hasn't won the big matches thus far, but their singles lineup is as good as any in the country. Okie St as an 11 will also be tough. Really looking forward to all of the matches.

Unfortunately, matches will only be streamed on FloTennis. I don't think college tennis is big enough for companies like this to come in and charge money to watch college matches. I can't imagine there are many people willing to pay for their ridiculously high subscription prices to watch college tennis.

It is not that bad. just get the subscription for only 1 month which is very affordable. and live feed is in HD quality so it is very good quality. and I believe all the courts are covered so you can choose which match you want to watch.

Not going to agree with Nostradamus that it's a conspiracy but I bet it is a bit frustrating for USC and UCLA to go across the country just to play each other for what will likely be the 1st meeting out of 4 or 5 this season.

Their one month subscription is $20, which is more than what services like Netflix, Spotify, Apple Music, HBO, and other services charge per month. I like college tennis as much as the next guy but in no way do I consume as much tennis as I do of those other services. FloTennis' pricing scheme is just ridiculous.

My biggest problem is with the precedent brought on by all these monthly charging services. College tennis is such a small market and just within a year of operating, services like FloTennis and Playsight have suddenly hopped on. With FloTennis charging money and Collegetennistoday also charging for blog posts, I think these are not good options for growing the sport.

I watched the womens National Indoors this past weekend on Flotennis. Just to let everyone know and I am not so computer literate, but the reception kept coming in and out throughout the weekend. You can watch individual courts, or the what is called the Flotennis Court, where someone is actually announcing, and goes from court to court throughout the match with very little thought, switching courts at the most inopportune times. One thing that did fool me when I signed up was the fact that it said "archive". I thought you could go back and look at the matches, but the archive is actually some videos of interviews and features, not matches. I hope this helps anyone interested in the service. It was a very frustrating weekend.
