ITA Men's National Team Indoors

I kinda think NC State will best Kentucky. San Diego over Duke less likely indoors.

Stanford has a fighting chance against Columbia. The other matchups should be fairly one-sided. Texas vs A&M should be fun though with the rivalry and the fans there from each program.

Things starting off spicy. Michigan wins doubles vs Virginia and UCF wins 4 first sets vs Ohio State
Michigan with a decent showing but they don't really have the depth to compete top to bottom with UVA. Ohio State will probably pull this one out vs UCF (4-3, maybe?), but this team just isn't up to the level of the past few years. Kim loses at #1 in straights to a guy he beat last year 6-0, 6-2, and whose record coming in was 10-8 splitting time at #1-3 singles. #6 Li is hobbling around on one leg, down 0-4 in the 3rd after coming up gimpy at the end of 2nd set tiebreak. Over and over Buckeyes losing the deciding point and not consolidating breaks, giving them right back.

This Ohio State team is much, much weaker than previous years. Their 1 and 2 are much weaker than Kinglsey and Boulais. 5 and 6.....are no where to Bernard and Anthrop (2023) and Bernard andf Cash (2024).

Virginia is not going to win many matches at 3 and 4 singles against top teams.

Wake Forest should have lost to Georgia a few weeks ago.

There is no dominant team in college tennis this year.

that hurts, I left at 4-2 up and come back, he lost 4 straight to lose the match, also very unfortunate at #6 with the injury
Anthrop has done worse before. Like at Individuals in the fall, where he was up 5-0 in 2nd set and lost 7 straight games to lose the match. In the past 5-8 years or so I can't remember a worse loss than this. Nothing against UCF of course, they came to play and didn't let up, but OSU really didn't show any kind of spark. When was the last time Ohio State lost to a team outside the top 20 (especially indoors)?

Texas up 2-0 against A&M, but there are some close matches going on. Looks like Roddick's nephew is giving Gorzney all that he can handle at line 2.

There’s so much parity. Like I said, UCF lost to a Miami team who is expected to be toward the bottom of the ACC and also barely slipped past FAU before now beating Ohio State.

This is gonna hurt Ohio State cause now they won’t have those top tier matches vs title contenders for the rest of the indoors weekend.

Lions have been turned into a kitten by the Cardinal. Go CARD, bring home the indoor team championship.

Duke clawing back from the brink. Planelles Ripoll won seven straight points from 0-5 in the 2nd set tiebreak to win it 7-5. And extend this match. Krug also saved a match point to pull out a win.

Full 3rd set on 5 to determine the winner

yep, Duke / Ripoll now up a break in the 3rd in the decider

gutsy stuff from the Spanish transfer, they really have no business still being in this match but didn't give up

This is great stuff I feel like the Duke player is on the verge of cramping up.
yeah tons of overrules in the final set - this electronic line calling is a mixed bag, corrects more errors but lets the players attempt to steal more close calls, because it doesn't come with the same automatic penalties for certain number of overrules - frankly I think the penalties for getting overruled a certain number of times should remain

Duke's Ripoll goes for the underhand serve at 5-6 30-30 in the deciding set, and when his opponent hits a nice slice approach skidding off the baseline he calls it out and gets electronic overruled - that was a wild sequence

nice job SD, in general the better team today, and as Gruskin said probably should have won an hour ago

agree hype machines can be annoying

how many years in a row has Gruskin predicted that Stanford and its players will win every NCAA team title / individual title / Wimbledon / etc?...remind me...

I'm just glad there are no Stanford fans on this board making those kinds of predictions.

heard from reliable source they going into PPS on the 4th overrule
IMO makes sense, will be lots of close balls that many officials may miss, so gives players and officials opportunity to make the right calls and coaches seem more at ease. Look forward to ELC being used more frequently

Duke, the best team....that money can buy......has certainly stunk it up so far at the indoors.
A team filled with transfers......can't even beat the host team.
Very disappointing weekend for the Dukies.

Landau being out has hurt but Planelles and Williams have not delivered to the expected degree so far. Also Petrovic playing up at 3 seems like an odd lineup choice.

They need to finish the weekend off with a win over Columbia which can salvage a little something or else yeah it will have been a bad trip to Waco for sure.

eh, nothing about this weekend changes my overall opinion of the team very much - i expect them to make it to final 16 in NCAAs and maybe have a shot at going farther than that if they get some breaks with peaking at the right time, avoiding juggernauts in the draw in the rd of 16

they're better than they've been in recent years, doesn't mean they're a top 6 or so team, and hopefully Williams will be winning more outdoors later in the season

only thing that would matter about them going 0-3 is that they'd likely be a 13-16 team and have to face a top 4 come NCAAs rd of 16, so, sure, that would be a bummer

San Diego trunk slams UCF 4-0 with all straight set wins. Most lopsided result of the event this weekend.
makes me worry even less about Duke - San Diego is a heck of a team, in that second tier behind the real national championship contenders, and Duke was as close as you can get to a W despite losing dubs

But, ultimately, that would prove to be their best showing of the weekend, whoops

Wonder if coaches will question bringing in too many transfers. The outcomes at Duke and Ohio State weren’t ideal. But it’s early to form an opinion. Plenty of time for those teams to integrate the pieces.

For Duke, it has been very underwhelming. Williams can't find a win it seems. Ripoli got clinched on all three days. Landau either hurt or worse. Brown not in the lineup. Only ones that are meeting expectations are Petrovic and Winegar. For Ohio State, Li has been basically a lock down low until he broke/sprained his ankle up match points against UCF. Kim has been meeting expectations whereas Jansen needs to do some soul searching as he can't seem to buy a win against good players.

I noted last spring that Ohio State was a program not using transfers and then they promptly completely changed their strategy in by getting multiple transfer starters in one year.

You wouldn’t expect them to lose any more matches because it’s only Big Ten from here on out, but they did just lose to UCF so not as invincible in league as previous seasons.

San Diego looking like the #3 in the country. Awesome run
Ryan Keckley and his team are amazing....
That being said, are you saying that they are better than Texas?
Texas took TCU to the woodshed when those 2 teams played

It is still amazing for San Diego to be looked at as...a top 5 team.
