Biggest jump Virginia from 41 at end of 17/18 to #17 Makes sense with the addition of Nakishima and other freshmen, return of Wiersholm, and year of experience now for Gianni Ross and other returning sophs
Arizona State moved from 38 to 24.
Alabama moved from 34 to 22. It has seemed for years the AL coach has been on the hot seat list. Now his team is preseason top 25. Has he turned things around? Used to be all his good players transferred-has he found a way to keep them?

At the top, Florida has moved from 10 at the end of last year to #4 and USC from #11 to 5 with UCLA dropping a few spots due to graduated players and the early departure of Evan Zhu (casualty of Transition tour? would he have gone pro early if changes had not been made?)
Of course Wake and OSU are 1 and 2; both teams have guys winning Challenger matches and ranked in ATP top 400; Wake has 2 in top 400. Baylor #11 has Roy Smith in top 400, and NC State which isnt ranked but got votes has Galarneau in top 400. 5 current collegians in ATP 400. UNC #6 has Blumberg (438). Cornell with votes but not top 25 yet has Ayeni (459) and TCU #14 has Rybakov (490). Lots of players on these top teams ranked ATP 500- 550: UVA freshman Nakishima, FL freshman Riffice, OSU soph McNally, and USC Brandon Holt. Overall 12 guys in top 550 and that does not include Cressy who is 590ish.

Top 25 list overall makes sense with some team +/- 7 or 8 spots based on new recruits and recent grads. Alabama was the big surprise to me. I still think SEC is a 3 way race between FL, GA, and Miss State with Tenn maybe having a play. Cant wait to watch Gators take on the Bulldogs in Athens in March. Not picking sides just looking for a great match.

@jcgatennismom Do you think Nakashima is the best player on UVA's roster? Brandon is a 14.46 and Soderlund (best guy listed) is a 14.42. Wiersholm is only a 13.55. Sometimes I'm not sure how well the UTR's compare when the players play if different pools (college versus juniors versus pros).

I think Brandon is the best UVA player at the start of the season as he has been playing top players; he beat Maxime Cressy 1,4 recently; Maxime (UCLA) played a lot of Futures over the last 6 months and won 1 recently. I looked on UTR and Soderlund has not played a match that counts for UTR since July. He lost to Brooksby, another top junior recruit in straight sets; Brandon recently lost a close 3 setter to Brooksby. Now after a month of dual season play, it could be Soderlund's experience could equal or offset Brandon's talent. The coach could start Soderlund at 1 regardless. That may be smart as Brandon will have to get used to no ads; the top juniors and most pros seldom make mistakes twice in a row, but in the college if you make an error at deuce, game over. I watched a 12 min game at one of the AO pretourneys with 7 or 8 deuces-dont know who would have won under college rules . However, success builds on success, and Brandon's experience at Futures should give him the edge at season start. Brandon beat Martin Redlicki who played #1 for UCLA in straights in Sept.

Do you think UVA comes out of this region in the Kickoff? A&M is still ranked 8 spots higher in preseason poll.

Good question, I was stunned that UVA was so bad last year and I do think they will rebound. Texas A&M is good but I think UVA will win that region, but that may because I remember watching the stacked UVA teams of Boland and maybe they are not quite that level anymore.

Just think if Stanford had Norrie in their lineup last year and year before that, what would have happened ? most likely we are talking about the Cardinal as the NCAA champs, right ?

The talent is all there and I think they will. Nakashima, Soderlund, Wiersholm, Lizen, and Ross will be starters in my eyes while there's going to be a dogfight for the last spot. It'll be an interesting year for UVA.

SMC went 4-17 last year and was at the bottom of the West Coast Conference. Stanford should have sent Geller and Rotsaert off to play a Future instead and let some of the bench guys handle this one.

Geller hasn't played in a while and he needs good confidence injection by beating this team easily. He can gain confidence and get on a roll.

just noticed, ITA has had months to prep their site and yet now you can not even see Dual Match results, like we had been able to see for years past. Sorry but do not feel like going to every university site for results.

The ITA needs to end their deal with R2. Its a nighmare
Agreed. Even fall ITA results are still screwed up. Results were entered so late in R2sports that results are either left out of UTR or entered twice. For example, Gabriel DeCamps won 6 matches to win A draw of Southern Intercollegiate in Athens in Sept; only 3 matches are in UTR 4 months later. I think many of that tourney's matches were entered at least 2 months late as I looked in Nov and results were missing in R2Sports (I discovered issue when trying to look up results for local freshmen playing event and results werent there). 150 players played that tourney and many are still missing 1-3 results in UTR. Conversely, many All American Qualifying and MD results are entered twice in UTR. e.g. Brian Cernoch played 8 matches between Quali and MD but he has 11 in UTR-3 duplicates. Another example is Stanford's freshman Rotsaert played 5 matches in AA Qualis but has 9 in UTR-4 are duplicates. Over 100+ top players UTRs could be over or underrated by the AA duplicates. If the results eventually got in R2sports but not in UTR, the ITA singles rankings are still correct. However, there are entire fall tourneys missing from R2 database including the HBCU nationals held 9/20-9/23 at Lake Nona USTA national campus. 56 men played (I assume similar numbers for the women) and none of those results are in R2Sports or UTR, and that is not the only missed tournament. However, since the players from missing tourneys aren't ones from Power schools, I wonder if the results will ever be entered. It's a shame for college players who may play prize $ or other tennis events where selection and/or seeding are determined by UTR that they are not getting credit on UTR for their wins or possibly being hit twice on their losses.. You would think the ITA would have some sort ot qualify control or checks to ensure results were entered, but since there are 100s of tourneys each fall, it is not surprising some fell through the cracks. In past years, did each college's sport info staff enter teams' results instead of relying on TD and staff to enter 100s of matches? Most TDs created draws on other tournament management software, thus having to enter participants twice-lots of extra work for a system that is not spectator, player or coach friendly.

I completely agree. I just want to go to one place to see all the recent results.

It looks like the ITA just released it's new dual match interface:
https://www.r2sports.com/system/rankings/ITArankings.asp

I have to admit, it's so much nicer than the tournament stuff. Hopefully they will keep making steps in the right direction.

Does Duke have some injuries? I saw on the new ITA interface above that Duke barely beat Elon 4-3. Duke lost the dubs point. 5 of Duke's top 7 per UTR were playing including Stachowiak and Sculley, but it took Stach playing 1 three sets to beat Elon's 1. Sculley and Furman easily won at 2 and 3. Dickerson, Levine, and Maciag were not playing. Duke has some great recruits coming in the next 2 years, but I wondered what happened at Elon. Duke had a guy playing at 6 who was barely UTR 9. Duke had several former players return Catalin Mateas and Vincent Lin ( per twitter Parsa_Bombs), but their UTRs are considerably below their highs. Maybe they are just rusty and will be back up to speed by conference play. Mateas did play singles vs Elon and won, but Mateas/Lin were drummed playing 3 dubs; they lost 1-6. Stach/Furman lost at 1 dubs. Will be interesting to see if Duke plays better vs Arizona State on Friday. Duke should be in the middle of the pack in the ACC someplace after Wake, UNC, UVA, Notre Dame, and Florida State, but will need to play better to avoid being one of the bottom teams. Stach/Sculley won dubs matches at US Open juniors a few years back; hard to believe Stach lost in dubs vs Elon.

If Duke had someone at #6 who is barely a 9 UTR player, then injuries were definitely a factor. Maciag was a fairly high blue chip recruit and did not play.

ones that stand out

Oregon at 15
Penn at 23
USC at 24
BYU at 27
Cal at 40

Georgia, Arizona State, Texas A&M unranked

The absence of Georgia, and the ordering of ranked SEC teams, really looks odd at the moment.

EDIT: Odd bit of trivia is that no Power 5 conference has men's tennis teams at all schools. Missouri is the only one to keep the SEC in that condition. Kansas, KSU, ISU, WVU in the Big 12; Syracuse, Pitt in the ACC; Oregon State, Washington State, Colorado in the PAC-12; Maryland, Rutgers in the Big 10.

.
It will be interesting to see what the USTA college ranking list looks like tomorrow (based on votes from 25 tennis "experts") Slam.tennis has GA at 37. When some teams have played as few as 6 matches and others 13, the list is only accurate at identifying the top 15 teams. UGA should be able to move into top 25 over the next month or so with playing outdoors and with the Trent Bryde playing.

Really crazy list now with Minnesota over Michigan and Louisville only 4 behind Cal. Lots of anomalies we will laugh at in 4 weeks...

USC at 24 is understandable tbh. Losses to Stanford and California should not have been losses. Holt at 1 and Cukierman at 2 is very strong, but their doubles and 3-6 singles need to be stronger. Verboven and Jaede probably aren't in their top forms at the moment. The team is strong, just need to put the right players in the right spots.

Are you saying that these are too high or low? I'm not sure I would put Arizona State in my top 50 at this point either. I know they are talented, but currently their best win is over Indiana. Oregon has a great record, so I think top 20 is justified. Penn just won the ECAC indoors. Other that SEC being undervalued, I think things are pretty reasonable based on what teams have actually done.

I agree, but aren't these rankings supposed to reflect what the teams have done to date, not how talented they are or where we expect they will end up later? Some of these power teams haven't shown us a whole lot yet.

I know this is early, and they haven't played many matches, but I can't remember a top 50 without UGA in it....Especially with teams like UNCW up there....Again, I know its early....So outside of the indoor results I am not sure anything past 20 really means much...

I am not saying any of the rankings are wrong, just pointing out interesting ones. What I mean by "stand out" is where teams are ranked based on pre-season expectations or how good the program usually is. Like Oregon has been pretty solid in recent seasons but 15 is still pretty high them. I like the ITA computer rankings because they are actually based on nothing but results rather than other college sports that use polls based on opinion, "eye test", historical bias etc.

Tenn at 15 vs ITA 26
Tex A&M at 22 vs ITA unranked
South Carolina at 23 vs ITA 31
Oregon at 25 vs ITA 15

Does anyone remember a college ranking system titled Ma*****? I cant remember the title but it included all the divisions not just D1 and ranked all teams. I think this system also ranked other collegiate sports. I wanted to bookmark it for this year once I find it again. Thanks.

I mean its not even close between him and #2

This is one of the largest gaps we have ever seen
